5 Reasons Why Bola Tinubu Will Not Be President In 2023- Opinion by lagbajatu: 6:00am On Apr 25, 2022 |
1. The council of State (past heads of State of Nigeria) and the ex generals and power brokers don't trust an Asiwaju presidency. Their body language has been obvious but Tinubu's media army are singing a different song in the Jagaban's ears. The power brokers appear convinced that if a much younger Nigerian with a broad National appeal, less baggage and zeal to deliver is not elected in 2023, it might be the end of the road for Nigeria. 2. Tinubu is a Sectionalist Since revealing his interest or intention for the highest office in the land. It is worthy to note that Bola Ahmed Tinuby has never been to any SS or SE State for his "so called" political consultations. The man has however crisscrossed the North and South Western parts of Nigeria, capitalising on Buhari's/APC's popularity in these regions, even though it is on record that Buhari's political appointments and patronage have been skewed to favour mainly the North and SW regions especially in the first half of this administration. This sectional style of governance is primarily responsive for the insecurity that has currently paralyzed the South East. Another sectionalist president, who would favour the groups who have been "enjoying" the past 7 years of Buhari's government will not have it. 3. Endless baggage While many might want to point to his many controversial corruption allegations and even an unclear educational history, the heaviest baggage for Tinubu will be his public comments against whole sections of Nigeria. In 2019, the former Lagos governor and APC strongmam was caught on camera using ethnic slurs and innuendos targeting Nigeria's 3rd largest ethnic group. His outburst was a calculated attempt which saw sudden electoral violence targeted at Igbo dominated Areas in Lagos on election day. The Jagaban's statement were largely responsible for the voter apathy (mostly among south east voters) that followed the violence. This doesn't seem like a crime that any right thinking person would forgive so soon. 4. Tinubu is an unpredictable authoritarian In his 8 years as governor and 15 years as defacto Regent of Lagos State (it is important to note that he has ruled by proxy ever since); the strongman scored was a serial cabinet "re-shuffler". He would usually not want a deputy governor beyond one term. He also did not want the governors after him doing beyond just a single term. This was not a deliberate effort to be cruel but an attempt to produce more reliable generals for his lifetime dream of becoming Nigeria's president and GCFR (Grand commander of the federal republic). 5. Lifetime President It should be on record that no Nigerian dead or alive has ever interfered or directly controlled the politics of any State or region as Tinubu has done in Lagos and the South West over the last 23 years. Nigerians (elite and masses alike) are very sceptical of excessively domineering politicians like the Jagaban. Every appointment and supposed achievement that Tinubu has scored throughout his political career has been towards one goal- "To be Nigeria's president". The man has not been driven by selflessness, he understands little about sacrifice (or maybe he just doesn't care), he has zero regard for whole sections of the Country. These bad traits tell more than enough of the kind of totalitarian government that a Tinubu presidency promises. Regardless, the jagaban (as he is fondly called) remains a force to reckon with in the ruling APC. Quietly putting the elephant in the room to sleep without much rancor, might be the greatest hurdle that APC would have to cross, if it's to retain power in 2023. Lagba writes from Illinois, US. Mandate2023: Are you serious? SE and SS not politically viable? Can anyone become president without at least 25% of votes from one of the region. You guys think you can rule Nigeria while isolating the SE and SS politically? 1 Like 2 Shares |

You're absolutely correct, however you didn't add the 6th factor which is the fact that Yorubas would have ruled far more than any other group in Nigeria should he be allowed. Even the Fulanis that use other Northerners as willing tools to dominate haven't even done so. You can't be a begger and still want to dominate! |
