Most Interviews are done with "solid" languages like Java, Python and C++. I haven't come across resources for JavaScript. You can pick up python in a 2 weeks with previous experience in another language, then start preparing for interviews.

Python let's you focus on the logic, and not the syntax. Unlike java or C++ that you have to do both.

I'm proficient in the three languages though, but I'm putting all my strength on java and Python. C++ shouldn't be a problem since I have java proficiency.

I friend of mine that got into Google last month did his interview in C++. The interviewers made it explicit that he had to choose form Java, Python, C or C++.

Those languages are were the big bucks are.
Well most interviews allow you choose your preferred language.
You're right about Python, you can do a lot with minimal syntax.
I guess I have to take a python course, then start learning some DSA

Yeah some companies give take homes but it's so rare. Out of like 10 interviews I only get one take home the rest are all dsa.
Okay, that's great to know.
I'm currently gonna pick up python, for the sole purpose of learning and practicing DSA.
Thanks

Exactly bro, I heard from someone that there are a few tech guys in some places in Abuja and Lagos already taking advantage of this. They just work from home in Naija. But it depends on the individual, for some people they would prefer to just leave Nigeria and change their environment and of course there's nothing wrong with that as well.

Damn tech is so crazy. Even I get shocked of the kind of things I see everyday. Some survey was done on the salaries of Blockchain developers and the least salary came in at 650 USD a month and the highest came in at 30k USD a month.

I thought the 30k USD a month figure was just a lie until someone posted his total compensation in a data structures group I am a member of on Facebook. It came down to 33k USD a month and this person lives in Nigeria. Dropped out of futa after 2 years like has no degree and has been able to achieve this whereas someone with PhD Is teaching for 30k naira a month.

Life no balance o. God, tech is just one crazy field. Its why we should remain humble o cause no matter how big you think you are a ton of people are bigger.

We? grin grin grin

For some reason which I can't explain, I'm not keen to japa o. I will rather earn close to US salaries here. The life here is less restricted and easier to enjoy here (with money o!) than in the abroad. I'd rather travel to the abroad on short holidays than live there permanently. I don't know why but the abroad no dey trip me I swear.

What's the difficulty range of the ones you've got? Easy? Medium? Does Dynamic Programming pop up a lot?

The last one I did was a combination of easy and very hard. The easy question was dynamic programming while the very hard one could be solved recursively but the recursive solution with memoization will lead to o(n) log time which I did the company mailed me back asking for a log(n) solution which will have to be solved mathematically using the binets method. It took me two days to come up with a working solution. Its a fibonacci series question with a twist to it.

It's possible to earn such in other fields. That's not the average salary of a programmer. Only 25% of programmers earn above 120k in the US. I'm not so sure but the average is around 100k. That guy brings to the table what many others cannot and so he gets a handsome reward.

Regarding school being irrelevant, you need to be able to go above and beyond. You have to prove that you're better if you don't have that degree. Not many people are in that league. For some companies you cannot go above a certain level without a bachelors or graduate degree.

I'm glad many people are taking advantage of remote jobs or opportunities however the passion should be foremost and the rewards follows.

Thanks for encouraging the community.

Tensa, please don't say this! You are a very big influencer here (alongside a few other reliable monikers here). While I agree that school is not a guarantee to succeed, it at the worst case minimises failure. Look at all the big names that dropped out of school: Bill Gates, Oga Mark Nsukkabread, the Google guys. They all made it big primarily because they were way more intelligent than what school could offer. But for every Mark Zuck there are probably a few tens of hundreds others that dropped out that didn't make it. A few millions that stayed in school that at least are earning a decent living. More decent than those that dropped out and didn't make it. You have to have a very high level of intelligence to succeed without some formal education. Let's encourage people to attend schools whether that is Uni or Tech training schools. That way more people are likely to earn a decent living. For every Ronaldo or Messi there are loads of failed footballers. School may not be the ticket to billions but it sure minimises your chances of living in penury.

Meanwhile 33k USD a month is mental! It's mad mad. That's $206/hr! Med!

I remember when I got hired by a Nigerian business earning the dollar equivalent of USD60k/Annum at the time. I was floating in the sky like who smoke loud mixed with coc@ine.... If I'm earning USD400k/annum the shock go hospitalise me. I will be shocktalized for months.

Una sure say I no go pick up programming intensely for 9 months like this so. Brutalise myself until the end of the year and 2023 be a new beast

You did a nice job on the school stuff. I couldn't have done better. On the earnings I'm not fazed by people's earning, I've worked with others in Nigeria making 2k USD a day though these are short term. I'm not also inclined towards tasking myself mentally to earn such. If you've got a talent that your employers recognize you will earn good. One thing is for you to be good and another is for an employer to recognize that talent. There are many examples of people who earn x2 in their new job roles because their previous employers failed to recognize their abilities. Many programmers also quit their roles after some time because they find it uninteresting or boring.

I've seen so many Devs wanting to improve their Arsenal and go work somewhere and earn big...

What about people that wants to build their own products instead?
While the money is great, I value my time and mental health a lot...
I'm equipping myself today, the aim is primarily to build my own products, not really to work in any firm or the sort. I believe I have great solutions to many problems...

I don't just see many Nigerians towing that path...

Everyone with what works for them sha...

It's easier to be an engineer than to be a owner. Starting a owner, (in your first few years) you "might" be earning so little while making your engineers smile.

You might fail too.

That's why so many are not on that path.

On point! And the primary reason for that is to ease travelling. Especially those kinds of journeys were you have to travel at short notice.

It is tough living in Nigeria no doubt, but if I earn considerably enough to be able to have unlimited travel with long duration visas, omo I'm staying here. Period. It's a big jungle in that "the abroad" that people are all hoping to travel to. Give me 20 years US, UK, Schengen, Australia and Japan multiple entry and I will stay put in this country.

Life is about risks... Some products can be operated solely by you in the first few months.
Starting small is the thing...

Some very simple apps are making bucks for their owners.

You don't necessarily need a team to get some products done bro...

Sometimes start small and scale.

Also, one is not limited to just one product...

Still on this japa thing
I'm sure you heard the story of that 16 year old John oseni that was poached by a blockchain company in Italy, and had to leave.

Would you say the guy's case was a product sheer luck, or the guy must have had a sound knowledge of DS&A baring the fact that he just got into tech 2years ago.

It really depends maybe the company didn't use dsa. I got a job in Vietnam last year a japa job but the salary offered was lower than what I earn in Nigeria here 1400 USD a month. It was the only job that sent me a take home which I passed the other jobs were all DSA. The good paying jobs like very good pay they require dsa. The rubbish jobs send take home.
