That is what their former president did and there was Peace heck even got over $30b in investment and bailouts from Russia, there was no problem before NATO backed a couple and it turned into the maidan revolution crap and here we are now. You border a country you basically share the same origin with over 40% of Ukrainians are ethnic Russians yet you want to join a millitary alliance that it sole aim is to destroy Thier ethnic country. You have to see how people are jubilating in mauripol and siding with Russian army

Maybe there is some benefit to him, although I do not know the real scale of damage but I know that war fought on your soil is never a good idea.

I watched a footage where over half a dozen Ukrainian soldiers were taking selfie by a destroyed AFV, a tank approach them, they thought it was an Ukrainian tank, the tank fire its smoothbore at them at less than 10 feets away.
The shockwave/muzzle velocity charred them to smithereens.
You pick a fight with someone not on your pedestal, that even those who can match and out-march them are being careful not to confront them directly. There's no wisdom in what Zelensky is doing to Ukraine.
I believe this military campaign might not have resulted in Russia using heavy weaponry, if not for NATO/US proxy involvement.
Russia is currently not seeing that campaign as contention with Ukraine again, but with NATO and their patron, USA. This is what is escalating the conflict and it might lead to Russia declaring war on Ukraine.
They didn't declare war, but see the carnage, if they now declare war, there would be nonstop Heavy bombardment from the famous White Swans.

Algeria and Egypt knows the kind of European neighbors they have(the Libyan onslaught that led to the death of Gadahfi by NATO is a point of note), they're arming up.
Down here, we're still talking about building roads.
