Finland And Sweden Could Join NATO Quickly, Stoltenberg Says by sapientia(m): 9:33pm On Apr 29, 2022
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Finland and Sweden will be able to join NATO quickly should they decide to ask for membership in the Western military alliance, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday.

"If they decide to apply, Finland and Sweden will be warmly welcomed and I expect the process to go quickly," Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels, adding he planned to speak with the Finnish president later in the day.

He said he was sure arrangements could be found for the interim period between an application by the two Scandinavian countries and the formal ratification in the parliaments of all 30 NATO members.

"I am confident that there are ways to bridge that interim period in a way which is good enough and works for both Finland and Sweden," Stoltenberg said.

Russia, with which Finland shares a 1,300-km (810-mile) border, has said it will deploy nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles in its Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad if Finland and Sweden decide to join NATO.

And I wonder how you think the Finns and Swedes would sleep peacefully every night knowing there are nuclear bombs deployed at their borders that could be set off at any time. It's not a win for any of them.

That’s why I said it's not a win for any of them. Prior to now, Sweden and Finland were always at peace and never faced any kind of military threat... It just shows that we should never underestimate the power of peace.

I know why I asked those questions cos someone who doesn't know the history of these conflicts, would read your submission and assume Russia just drove into these countries and forcefully annexed them. As a matter of fact, only Crimea was annexed and this is why: Crimea used to be part of the Russian side under the soviet union. After the death of Stalin, there was some kind of conflicts among some of the republics that made the soviet union and as a way of reconciliation, Russia gifted Crimea to the Ukraine. Crimea is 100% Russian. The US sponsored coup of 2014 that ousted Yanukovych, was the reason Russia annexed Crimea. They simply took back the territory that was gifted to Ukraine. Prior to that time, Russia never attempted to take any part of Ukraine.

The issue with Transnistra is not Russia's fault. Transnistra broke out from Moldova to be a republic of its own due to their own internal conflict. However, they were more of a pro-Russian region, speaking same language with Russia. After the breakaway, Russia decided to support them militarily and also provides them with free energy. This also made them more pro-russian. Russia never invaded or attempted to invade Moldova.

The issue with Georgia dates back to as far as even the pre-soviet era. Georgia has been on and off under the control of Russia. After Georgia broke away from Russia finally as a republic of its own in 1991, some of the problems that they were having even while under the soviet union, still persisted. That's where you have the issue of South ossetia and Abkhazia republics. These people relied on Russia for military assistance and hence the reason why they had the Georgian-Russian war of 2008. If you go and read the history of South ossetia and Abkhazia on its own, you will find out that its a complex situation that dates back to the era of the soviet union. It's not something that started just yesterday.
