My Software Engineering Journey In ALX Africa by Anonymous6o6: 12:46pm On May 02, 2022 |
My Journey Before now, I have been learning frontend development using W3school and LinkedIn Learning. I even got help from a friend who linked me to a backend developer for job opportunities. But due to the fact that I was still learning and haven't built any projects, I was given a link to finish up some basics projects and get back to him. Since then, I have been focused on learning. I intend to learn JavaScript and react before building the projects. Now, to the matter at hand, I recently discovered ALX software engineering program through their ads, made some research and it turned out to be legit. I quickly signed up, mostly because of their curriculum (I will drop pictures on that soon), which was pretty cool since I have seen what Udacity, Coursera and other online courses have to offer on software engineering. Another reason I signed up was because it was free! Well they said this year's program was waived by Mastercard and I will be getting a certificate after completion, love it! Though I also heard one has to pay after graduating and getting a job. Let me break down the program duration, the software engineering program is for 12months, 70hrs a week, 10hrs a day... Maybe it won't be up to that but this is base on my research. On the first month, one is required to get 80% percent score or get eliminated! Lol not killed tho, like removed. After graduation, you get added to the "Room" for job opportunities and build your connection, cool right? After registering for the program, I was notified the onboarding would start on 2nd of may. On 30th of April, I was sent an email to read through the curriculum, activities, required committed and projects. I will be sending screenshots of the importance ones. I realized that I will be involved in group projects, solo projects, networking and more. 18 Likes 2 Shares |

Today, I received another email from ALX SE team with resources to check out before the program fully commences on 9th of may. It included link to create a GitHub account, video about git and GitHub and books on C. I was advised to read them ahead for better understanding of C, since they cover the fundamentals. I intend to continue learning frontend because I really need a job(money) and also go through with the software program. I will be writing about journey, problems and solutions to provide information for anyone who needs it. 8 Likes 1 Share |

I already watched the git and GitHub video sent to my email. The picture below are the books we have to read for C. They're really voluminous I tell you. Will give an update next week after the first class, for now, I have a lot to catch up on. 4 Likes

I really like that the fundamental data structures and algorithms are taught very seriously before you even start the main programming. That's a very good one from them. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Ovo200: Well that's another reason I find it exciting. Not gonna lie, I feel mentally drained out. I was at work watching the Git and GitHub video, I couldn't read C cause I revised my CSS notes. Lol I have notes for every programming language. 4 Likes |

tensazangetsu20: Indeed! That is the part I look forward to the most. I just don't look forward to the overwhelming stress. A lot of people I know can testify to that. Anyways I will be off for a while until when I have new updates. |

I'm enjoying this course, I'm deeply interested in that alx course but 70 hours a week is too burdensome. 2 Likes 2 Shares

*I rather be rich and emotionally empty than be poor and miserable* It hasn't been easy studying C and learning frontend skills. I easily get mentally exhausted and forgetful these days. I'm not complaining lol, because if I don't combine both, there won't be hope of me getting a better job soon and my loans might actually give me a heart attack. I received a message today from the ALX SE team about creating an intranet account. This would be where the virtual classroom take place as well as my progress, tasks, results and resources for the program. I was given a personal ID, created my password to login. I had to fill in some details like my GitHub account, LinkedIn link, address, number of closest relation, address and more. After that tiresome exercise, I was instructed to download Slack in order to connect to the community of ALX software engineers. I'm really tired right now and would be retiring to bed in order to wake up early to study. 9 Likes |

This was the message I received today. I just realized that 70hrs a week would be 14hrs a day, that is, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. The good news is that I can always watch the tutorial videos at my convenient time. For the the first month which requires 80% score to continue the program, it is necessary to be active online (they actually score base on one's presence). The second thing is that you have to complete all projects sent to your email (These projects are usually sent with limited time). 4 Likes

Techstar: Well I'm doing it anyways. There's a way I plan my schedule to my convenience. Although, it makes learning slow but I do it anyways. Like today, I learnt the basics of C. The fact that C is a low level language because they have no automatic memory management but it runs faster than python, Java etc. C++ is an extension of C, the difference is that C++ supports classes and objects while C doesn't. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Anonymous6o6:This isn't a joke....More strength I pray. Does it mean you have to be online throughout the 14hrs? |
Re: My Software Engineering Journey In ALX Africa by Anonymous6o6: 10:56pm On May 05, 2022 |
kennethfranc: Well not really but at least 9hrs AA day, one's profile should be on "active" and not "offline". 2 Likes |

Good morning I received another message today pertaining working for 3months with alx open space in Lagos. They have four different locations one can pick base on the distance. One has to report to their office 4times a week and if you quit the ALX program, you also have to quit working in the space. I had few questions pertaining the space, will I get paid? Cause I believe there are experiences to gain working with them but they are only going to pick 100 people. I filled the form either way, fingers crossed! There's a part of me that hopes I don't get picked cause I'm really calculative about the benefits of being involved and the workload. I will update you guys how it goes later. I found an inspiration to work harder this morning. "The unknown govt" as they call themselves held four soldiers hostages, three females and a male. The females were raped and later butchered. The male was also butchered. It was painful to watch since the man's wife was among the females that were raped and butchered. I know no place is safe on earth but I rather be in a place where I find peace of mind. 3 Likes

Yo... The ALX SE community had a very interesting meeting today live on YouTube and Zoom where they enlightened us about the program and opportunities. I recorded to watch later but I will be dropping some of the important talks I remembered. We were also given opportunities to ask questions while the mentors answered. It started with a recruiter, who told us about the opportunities of getting a job after the first 9month foundation program. According to her. She usually help ALX students in getting jobs by interacting with the employers directly and presenting your skills to them(LinkedIn and GitHub account). If you want to get a job, you must have a following.. - An up-to-date LinkedIn account - Must have completed all the projects given to you during the program - Have a resume stating all your skills - If you want a job, you will have to send your resume and github account to the placement team who would in turn check for opportunities that matches your skills, after which you have to go for an interview. We also learnt there are at least four cohort in a year. Another name for cohort is "batch". I think I should be among the second batch or third since I registered in April to start in 9th of may. Another thing is that, while we proceeds with the ALX, you will eventually be added to the "Room". For job opportunities, networking and all. I thought that would be at the end of the program but it seems not. Depending on your grade, you might be added early. Emphasis on "grade" if you want to get a job opportunity. According to the long talk, if you want to succeed in this program, you have to read ahead. Which was why they sent some materials to us. Because According to them, 12months isn't enough time to cover all that is required but if you read ahead, watch tutorial videos, attend community meetings and finish your projects before the deadline, then you won't have a problem getting a job! 15 Likes 2 Shares |
