Is A Nigerian Salary Earner Of 500k Per Month Considered Rich? by ObosiUkwalla: 12:36pm On May 25, 2022
So I was arguing with a friend who stays in the states and he keeps saying I am a rich guy.

Current salary is about 512k per month (take home), and has an annual increment of 15% of your take home. This is aside perks of perdiem anytime I travel outside work base (15k per night).

Anytime he wants me to have minor something done in NG on his bahalf, he expects me to use my money and whenever I ask, he tells me not to complain that I am rich (he knows what I earn), I don't have a problem doing those things for him.

I don't see myself rich and pls guys, what can someone earn in Nigeria to be termed rich. Your opinions will count alot as I still find it hard getting the usual daily stuffs we all use.
I am not married and do not have responsibilities. My mom is a retired govt worker and other siblings are all working.

Cc: seun mynd44 pls help us for more audience and opinions

You don't have to be married to have responsibilities. You can have dependent siblings and/or friends that will not let your salary rest.

Speak for those that have zero in economics sha not me. With that pay I will enjoy my life here in Nigeria and never look for more. I will still save 250k per month at the end minimum. I live a minimal lifestyle, no smoking, drinking, clubbing, womanising nor friends and don't fancy social attention.

I suppose you have no responsibilities?

You will live an average life, yes. But, you can not be called rich.

Even if you earn 20 million and have bad spending culture you will not be considered rich too, being rich goes down to your ability to save for financial dry seasons. That 500k is what Generals, professors and consultant doctors get monthly. They are rich in their capacity considering they earn 15 times the minimum wage.

Of course, I can. But, I just made him to understand that a 500k earner can't be called rich in present-day Nigeria.

It’s average salary in a working system. Nigeria is not a properly working system hence OP is seen as wealthy. If OP japa he’ll find out he’s only one level above high school graduates.

Money is never satisfying. If it was many people would stick in one job position for their whole lifetime. Also spending habits change depending on one’s income. You can hold yourself for a few years at most, however you will start consuming according to your means.

as much as your friend is just a greedy person who expects you to dash him money left right center, he is righ to say that you aint poor.... but just because you aint, that doesnt mean you should also be foolish in throwing your money away like that.

lots of responsibilities/mouth to feed??!!?! do the people who earn 50K monthly NOT have these same responsibilities/mouth to feed?!?!?
i think it is dangerous to claim that earning 500K monthly in Nigeria is anything but being rich....lets forget anywhere else in the world, in NIGERIA, 500K monthly is a LOOOOOOOOT!

This is no argument, so forget it.

As I said before, 500k is an average salary. And what comparison does 50k have to do with 500k? When you are calling monthly stipends? 50k follow?

Na average money, biko.

the above will be as crazy as saying that a millionaire in USD aint rich because he has taste for flying private jets and living on superyacht everyday, lol! no matter what your taste for bling bling are, until you lose that money, you will be considered rich.

earning 6m per year in Nigeria, you are rich!

500k is a lot of money to an average Nigerian. But it's not enough to be called rich. However, If you are consistently earning that for about 2 years, going to 3, then you can be considered rich
