TOPIC: THE GREATEST VALUE OF OUR MOST PRECIOUS POSSESSION
TEXT: MARK 8:34-38
• 34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
• 35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
• 36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
• 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
• 38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
In these verses, the Lord is talking to you and I, to everyone, to sinners and saints. He asked what it will profit anyone if he gains the whole world and lose his soul. He is talking about our most prized possession, our soul.
The Lord is talking to you, turn over His words in your heart. You have been coming to the Bible Study for a long time, what impact has it made on your life? It is not enough to always attend, it is more important to let the word sink into your heart. The question comes to you tonight, what is your most treasured possession?
Is it:
• Temporal, or eternal?
• Earthly gains, or material wealth?
• Personal profit and progress?
• Political or personal prosperity?
• Material or academic position?
• Personal and desirable things that you hold tightly to?
All these are temporary and will pass away with time. The possession, wealth and riches of the whole world will not compensate for the loss of your soul. The soul of man is his greatest possession. All that you gain in the world you will leave behind: money, wealth, prosperity, interactions, connections and anything on earth. After this world, what you will take to eternity where you will never die is your soul.
What must you do? Your soul must be valuable, well prepared, and ready. Your soul must be saved and restored and renewed if you have gone astray. It must be purged from all sins, evil and iniquity, and anything that will hinder it from getting to heaven. It must be secured in fellowship and abide in Christ. You need preservation and preparation so that you will get to heaven at the end.
Do not throw away your most treasured and precious possession on the rubbish heap of the world. Your life, heart, destiny, do not toss to the devil. Ensure that you are able to answer the question Jesus is asking and be sure that your soul will be ready for that day. What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and lose his own soul?
A. HIS INCONTESTABLE WORDS ON OUR ENDURING SALVATION. Mark 8:34-35
Jesus says if you are following Him, you must make up your mind, and turn away from the world. You repent of your sins, rely and believe on Him. Your salvation is enduring, abiding and permanent, and it is the beginning of your walk with the Lord.
Jesus said unto His disciples that whosoever will follow Him must first of all deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Him. Salvation is the first step, but you must ensure it endures. This is the incontestable word of our Lord. No theologian, preacher, Bishop or Shepherd can change it.
The Lord says for our salvation to endure, we must do some important things:
1. HIS COMMAND TO DENY SELF. Mark 8:34
Are there things that come to your life, wanting to stop your salvation journey? The Lord expects you to think of your salvation and deny yourself (Matthew 16:24). How do you deny self? Remember Peter indulged himself and denied Christ, claiming several times that he did not know Him. So, you should deny self, and refuse to identify with it.
You must:
i. DENY self. Refuse to do anything to please self.
ii. Be DEAF to self. Do as if you are not hearing when self is telling you to commit sin.
iii. DISOBEY self. Refuse to obey the command of self to do anything that will make you displease God
iv. DISCIPLINE self. Self will like to be undisciplined. You will not allow self to lead you to misbehave. If people will discipline themselves the way they want to discipline others, then self will be put in its proper place in their lives
v. DOMINATE self. Self likes to be domineering, but you will dominate it and put it under control.
vi. DIMINISH self. Bring self down from the ivory tower. Cut down the power of self over you.
vii. DEAD to self. You consider self as being dead. Constantly bring yourself away from the dominion of self. Self must be dead.
2. THE CARRYING OF OUR CROSS SHAMELESSLY. Mark 8:34
Everyone has a cross to bear. Pastors, Ministers, workers, members, everyone. To be a Christian is to daily bear your cross. Many people think that immediately they come to Christ, especially when they come into ministry, everything will go well, and all will honour and reverence them. They have forgotten that they have crosses to bear. Some husbands think their wives must always respect and honour them, otherwise, they will start contemplating separation or divorce, sharing of children and properties. They do not know that enduring inconveniences from their wives is one of the crosses they have to carry. Such husbands must deny self.
• GRACE, FAITH and PRAYER:
There is nothing these three elements cannot help you endure. With them, you can carry any load, bear your cross and go through any challenge.
• BOLDNESS and COURAGE:
With these two virtues, you receive strength to carry your cross. Christians are different from people of the world, they should not be afraid of everything: cockroaches, rats, storms, winds, etc. but be bold and courageous.
Some people are parasites, they are always leaning on others. They forget that everyone has his or her cross to carry, so they call this or that person to help them carry theirs. From tonight, courage and power to carry your cross will come into your life.
• CARRYING the CROSS in HIS SERVICE: The service of the Lord is not a bed of roses. There are challenges you will bear and difficulties that will come your way. The cross might be heavy, it might be pinching your head and shoulders, but you will carry it all the same (Hebrews 12:2) There is no cross that you carry that will be as heavy as the one Christ carried for you, so you must bear your cross enduringly.
3. THE CALL TO FOLLOW HIS STEPS. Mark 8:34
Any situation you come across, you must always ask yourself, what would Jesus do? He always remembered and obeyed His Father in heaven. That is exactly what you are to do.
1 Peter 2:21
• For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
Some people say they do not know their calls. This is the call outlined in the text above: to follow the example of Christ. Following the Lord can be difficult for your friends and relatives to understand. They might not understand your decision to be upright because they were not privy to your salvation and calling (Luke 9:59-62). You must pattern your life to please Christ alone, not yourself, or any of your relatives or acquaintances.
John 21:20-22
• 20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
• 21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?
• 22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
Some people look at others, wondering what they are doing because they see themselves as being overworked in the service of God. There must not be any basis for comparison between you and other Christians. You must follow the Lord in a personal and focused way, not looking here and there, at this person or that person. You must follow only Christ, not a stranger, or a backslider (John 10:5). Never set anyone as your standard, Jesus is the only Standard that we all must follow.
B. THE INCOMPARABLE WORTH OF YOUR ETERNAL SOUL. Mark 8:36-37
You have a soul, that is why you are alive, that is why you can move around and think, and hear the words I am speaking now, and the soul must be saved, that is why Jesus came to the world. The soul of man is very valuable. God made man in His own image, and breathed the breath of life upon him, and he became a living soul. While the body dies and goes to the ground, the soul which is eternal goes to God, hence, it lives forever.
Many people do not understand that we are in a period of probation. We are here to prepare for eternity, not to amass wealth and material things. Some do not know this, or have forgotten, hence, they make no preparation for eternity and thereby lose their souls. Everyone has a soul to be saved and taken to heaven.
1. THE GREAT WORTH OF YOUR SOUL
Why is the soul so precious and great in the sight of God? (Genesis 2:7) Because it came from God and because it is eternal, just as God Himself is eternal (Psalm 49:7-.
The soul of man is more precious and greater than:
i. The whole world. If it were possible to gain the world and lose your soul, it will be a terrible loss.
ii. All the precious things on earth: what people run after and appreciate,
iii. Greater than all the wealth and money in all the banks of the world. Some people leave the church because they say the church is only preaching holiness and not emphasizing on prosperity. Even if they give you money where you move to, it cannot buy you eternal life.
iv. Greater than all positions and privileges in the world.
v. Greater than the body, belly and the pleasures the world can afford. All some people look for is the pleasure of the body. Your soul is more important than these.
vi. Greater than all the favour and frowns of all the men of the world. Some people bend towards anyone who does good to them and forget themselves, while some cannot bear the frown of men.
vii. The soul of man is so precious and valuable that Jesus gave His own life and blood to redeem it. He did not purchase any of the planets of the world. So, you must keep and appreciate your soul (Matthew 10:28). Remember that your soul is greater than whatever they (persecutors) want to take away, or want to kill, or whatever you may lose: job, profit or any other privilege.

2. THE GRIEVOUS WASTE OF LOST SOULS. Mark 8:36-37

When the soul of man is lost, it is a grievous waste (Luke 12:16-21) Some people value achieving their earthly goals more than keeping their souls. All some people run after is material gains. They care for the effect the race will have on their physical concerns, so they choose what to do, and what not to do for Christ.
Anyone who loses his soul in pursuit of money, material wealth IS A FOOL!
What makes us richer towards God? Not money, houses, wealth, material things, certificates, children, possessions, women, (polygamy), politics: in the nation and in the church. No one should lose his or her soul for any of these.

3. THE GRACIOUS WEALTH OF LIBERATED SOULS. 2 Corinthians 8:9

This is talking about spiritual riches of salvation, righteousness, sanctification, Holy Ghost power and opportunities in the kingdom of God.
Ephesians 1:7. His grace comes into your life, your sins are forgiven, your souls is saved and your name is written in heaven (ch 2:4) Salvation and all that grace can accomplish in your life are your greatest wealth (Colossians 1:27; Revelation 3:17-19) Repent and divert your zeal away from money and material things to the things of God.

C. OUR INCOMMUTABLE WATCHFULNESS AGAINST EVERLASTING SHAME. Mark 8:38
This means that any other characteristics or quality you have, you must always be watchful because the devil, demons, the enemies of your soul are always nearby to drag your soul to hell. So, you cannot exchange watchfulness for anything else.
Imagine anyone being ashamed of Christ after all the pain, shame and disgrace He bore for us! May we not be ashamed of the Lord! Why do people become ashamed of Christ? They forget Him, their salvation, their souls and focus on the people around them. The Lord will be ashamed of whosoever is ashamed of Him here on earth. We will not be ashamed of the Lord.

1. CONTEMPTIBLE COMPANIONS ASHAMED IN THE WORLD
Imagine a wife on whom her husband has paid the highest dowry and sustained and took good care of now ashamed to identify with him! Such a woman is contemptible and is not worth anything of value. So it is for anyone who is ashamed of the Lord who had paid the greatest price and made so much sacrifice and bore much pain for him.
John 12:42-43
• 42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
• 43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
You will not be ashamed of Christ. You will not love the praise of man more than the praise of God, but you will stand firmly for Him.
2 Timothy 2:12. Many people are not willing to deny themselves and stand for the Lord because of oppression, persecution and opposition. You will not deny Him. You will not be ashamed of Him.

2. CORRUPTED COMPROMISERS ASHAMED OF HIS WORD
The word of Christ is greater and more than the words of man, of the greatest scientists, philosophers and politicians, more than the word of the heads of families (Luke 9:26). You must not marry an unbeliever or multiple women no matter the pressure. You must elevate His words above those of anyone, regardless of their status and position in society.
Matthew 24:35
• Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
In the olden and modern times, the word of God remains the same and will never pass away unfulfilled.
2 Corinthians 2:17
• For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
We will speak the word of Christ and will not corrupt them.

3. CONSECRATED CONQUERORS UNASHAMED IN THEIR WITNESS. Acts 5:41
The grace and power of Christ will see you through. The disciples were rejoicing after they have been beaten and persecuted for the sake of Christ (Romans 1:16; 2 Timothy 1:12) Do you methodically avoid suffering, persecution and ill treatment? (Hebrews 12:2-3) Live your life as you ought to. Smile at your storm. Belittle and laugh at that shame. Show that you are happy that you are suffering for Christ. Are you secretly regretting your stand with Christ? Do not. This is about your salvation, remember that your name is in the Book of Life. The more you are persecuted, the stronger you will become (1 Peter 4:12-16).
1 John 2:28. I will abide. If you are saved, abide in Him. If you are yet to be saved, be saved today and afterwards abide in Him. Christ is coming for all those who are standing upright, who are not ashamed of Him (Hebrews 2:11). Christ is not ashamed to call us brethren. When He comes, He will not be ashamed of you, but you must not be ashamed of Him now. You must let everyone around you know that you are with Him and for Him. Let them know your stand.
Prayer:
• Pray for grace to endure to the end, and not deny Christ
• Pray for our father in the Lord, that the grace of God will sustain him to the end.
