With the last-minute support for his candidature by Mr Tambuwal , Atiku overwhelmed Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike (371 votes to 237 votes) to clinch the party's presidential ticket.

On Sunday, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu, described the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, as the hero of the party’s presidential convention where on Saturday a former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar, was elected the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.

Mr Ayu was referring to the stepping down of Mr Tambuwal for Atiku shortly before voting started, a development observer said decisively swung the contest and saved the party the tension of a close race and possible deadlock.

However, PREMIUM TIMES has now obtained new information on Mr Tambuwal’s actions shortly before he withdrew from the race. Our findings indicate that Mr Ayu was one of three persons the governor consulted on the convention ground before he made the announcement.

The governor had, like other aspirants, taken his five minutes slot to address delegates during which he appealed to them to vote for him.

But after the last aspirant spoke, Mr Tambuwal suddenly rose from his seat, called a former governor from the north-central, and calmly walked with him to one of the northern aspirants, Bala Mohammed, to inform the Bauchi governor that he had come to a decision to step down for Atiku.

According to a party official who attended the convention, a bewildered Mr Mohammed, apparently shocked, stared at his colleague governor and his witness for a moment, before regaining his composure to demand from Mr Tambuwal the reason for the last-minute decision.

According to the source, Mr Mohammed tried to dissuade the Sokoto governor but the latter told him that his mind was made up and that there was no going back.

Immediately after his conversation with Mr Saraki, Mr Tambuwal immediately dashed to where Mr Ayu was seated, a witness said. He then told the party chairman he was quitting and that he had put his two other colleagues (Messrs Saraki and Mohammed) on notice.

Mr Ayu reportedly sighed in relief and patted Mr Tambuwal on the back. The Chairperson of the party’s convention committee was then notified that the Sokoto governor had an important message to deliver to delegates before the commencement of voting.

The governor then returned to the stage to announce his withdrawal from the race, saying he was doing so as a patriotic duty to his party and country.

Before his sudden withdrawal from the contest, Mr Tambuwal was said to believe he had support from a majority of party leaders and delegates in six of the seven North-West states (Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Katsina and Kaduna) as well as from Imo, Taraba, Anambra, Nasarawa, Kogi, Ondo and Benue and therefore in pole position to win the primary with sprinkles of votes from other states of the federation.

The North-West had the largest number of delegates (193) and Mr Tambuwal banked on this in considering himself one of the frontrunners until he asked delegates to switch their votes to Atiku.

Thank you for this piece of information... but of what use has your leaderships benefitted Nigerians, we see the merriments of primaries, campaigns, screenings, laughs and gags all lit up at the detriment of the people whom you jostle to lead, gunmen terrorizing the nation, bandits killing farmers, Ghana must go of foreign currencies rolling from one booth to the other, yet our students are home due to ASUU strike, our manufacturers cant find FX to produce our food, our Farmers are killed while they try to provide for us, our parents are kidnapped on their way home from work, our kids are murdered in schools..

Of what purpose is your struggle to lead us when our concerns are not your priorities. Thank you, but we would look elsewhere..

Vote right, vote Labour, Vote peter Obi..

I can not foretell what the future holds for him, but he is a betrayal, a serial one for that.

Not that I care about any political actors in Nigeria or the possibility of anyone of them doing a better job in governance. Tambuwal rubbished Tinubu in Buhari's first term before he lost out in the power game and moved back to Pdp.

Tinubu who ensured he won Apc nomination as governor, prior to that he supported him to emerge as the house speaker by defeating his opponent,a Yoruba lady.

Not so many people admire Wike before the convention, but Tambuwal betrayal has won Wike many admirers. They won't forget and are waiting for Tambuwal in that future

Tambuwal has only put himself on the political betrayal list.

He did it in HOR, in Pdp, in ApC and has repeated it in pDp.

He is who he is. Tambuwal!

The south should make sure PDP won no state in its region at the presidential election.

When I read posts like yours, I can't help but wonder which part of the body people like you reason from.

Tambuwal betrayed who exactly? What is the betrayer about Tambuwal ensuring that the ticket stays in the North and giving his party a better chance at the general elections?

Tinubu supported this, Tinubu supported that.....has no one ever supported Tinubu? Is he God? Tinubu has been a Senator and Governor. Are you guys saying that he never got support from anyone to reach where he is today? Why aren't those that supported him ever mentioned?

As for Wike, he has lost the PDP primary, he doesn't deserve the ticket, irrespective of anything. Which right thinking person would desire that Wike gets the presidential ticket of a major party? You guys should go and feast on Wike's extra admiration na and leave Tambuwal alone.

Wait...the aspirants from the South, especially the Southsouth, who contested in the Presidential primaries didn't betray Wike, it is Tambuwal that did abi? Your sense of judgement is terrible!

Tambuwal is known to be smart. He demonstrated that to become Speaker at the NASS (Mind you, Tinubu didn't elect Tambuwal as Speaker, his colleagues did), and has done so again to prevent a major leadership menace from occuring.

It will be very difficult for the south to beat the north in any party primary because the north are usually united when it come to, who becomes the president of nigeria. Whereas, the ego in most of our southern aspirants, will not let them to clinche the party ticket. It is a pitiable bismal. I wish the south can have sense for once.

I found it ridiculous if not downright hilarious the way mkporu miri cannibals have been attacking Tambuwal for stepping down for Atiku. Most of these South Easterners are just too naïve about politics. Some said after all what Wike did for Tambuwal.

1) Please what exactly did Wike do for Tambuwal
2) Wike is not sellable to the Nigerian populace because of his character and his drinking problems. No northerner would vote for a drunkard.
3) Tambuwal stepped down for the best man to win the election which is a very smart move. A Wike PDP would have meant a walk over for the APC.

Tambuwal put the interest of the party ahead of his own political ambitions, ahead of all other interests which is what Wike is not capable of doing.

Serial betrayal, serial decampee

He will do so again and again

The south and some middle belt can win the north if United In any primaries or general election, contrary to all the lies Tambuwal has been pushing forward... GEJ proved it in 2011

That is why it is called politics...

Within the PDP delegates, the governor might have had the advantage, but in the wider society, he would not stand a chance...

The reality remains that on the national level, Atiku remains PDP's best chance of clinching the presidency (as unfortunate as that might be).

Obi would have been a better option (relatively since they are all rouges) but the situation in the SE has shown that their votes cannot be relied upon in the forthcoming presidential elections as such, they are the least valued zone in the context of general elections...

Wike is just too brash & his appeal to generality of Nigerians, is mediocre at best... but the man is a fighter & someone you would love to have in your corner when push comes to shove...

forgetting that it was the same Wike who removed his brother Secondus before his tenure ended and put Ayu there.

It is called karma.
