Saving is a choice.
Truth is, it is very hard to save if you don't have the basics of life yet. Las las you'll spend your savings on (food, clothing and shelter). Truth is, bills will always come and you have to find ways to increase your funds. In my final year, I realized that I didn't even have any savings, I was practically living hand to mouth, until I made a choice that before I spend on any bill, I'll pay myself first and I will not touch it. It worked for me and by the end of the year, I saved 200k+. I tracked my money, saw where my money was going to, tracked my source, saw the need to have multiple streams of income, cut down my expenses to the bare minimum. By the following year I ×10 my income. That's how to grow. Grow your finances because your bills will never stop growing. Thanks. grin grin

Yes the economy is on autopilot ,people are doing anyhow and inflating prices and so many negative things and government have weak or no regulations and corruption reeks everywhere, many are underemployed and many more unemployed.

First, I will say it depends on which part of the country you are working in for you to be able to save out of a 50k salary. Things are considerably cheaper in some parts of the country than the others.
See naa only person wey get much people to lean on dey slack. As a man you need to learn to save by all means, struggle to stand on your own feet. The 50k is more than enough if you can close your eyes to some expenses.

Although i am also in your shoes, For instance when I got my job in Ogun, I had to stay in a place for like 4 months. I noticed i was unable to save 1 kobo. I analyzed what could be the cause. I struggled to save to get a face me I face you room.
After the payment I realized I couldn’t afford a mattress at the moment … that’s if I want to survive going to work, transportation.., eating and not tasking my colleagues for money. Apart from that I still have younger ones I am sending money.

Omo I painted the room myself and bought a rug. I bought two big blanket and I have laid it down in the room like that. I dey use am sleep pending the time I will buy a better mattress. No one will know that’s how my room looks and most importantly, i will be able to save gradually.

You reminds me of my humble beginning...

Bro, do you know when I rented my first apartment in Lagos(post NYSC), I slept on a mat spread on a tiled floor for months before I could save up to buy mattress.
Some nights I will take my neighbor's detachable cushion cover and arrange about three as a makeup bed, other nights I used my backpack as pillow. smiley

Nobody except God and maybe that my neighbor knew I went through that, but thank God it's past and God has been faithful.

Even though your salary isn't much compared to our harsh economy but I must say that your saving culture is to be blamed. Otherwise you would be saving something no matter how little

Please learn to save before spending.

If you have only one account ( where your salary is paid), I advise you open another account without ATM card. Once you get your salary, transfer any amount you wish to save into this account while you go ahead to spend the rest with caution.
Do this and thank me later.

I must say this year has been better and much brighter compared to the previous year. But one thing i have been worried about is my saving culture or is it that what i earn isn't high/sufficient enough to cater for bills like transportation, feeding, housing, electricity and other miscellaneous bills.

My salary is a little above 50k and before you know it, by the 3rd week of the month, everything would have finished. I cant say i am spending lavishly on anything because i an introvet. I hardly get to save anything at the end of the month and it pains me alot. I wonder if i am the only one facing this experience or there are other people earning lower or higher facing this.

Could it be that my saving culture is poor? How do you solve this challenge or how are you coping with it.

Inflation is growing at a very rapid rate....eating away the purchasing power of our money. It will take 10 hefty men to lift goods worth of #1,000 purchased in 1980..Today, a 10 year old girl will lift goods worth of #1,000. A complete loss in the purchasing power of the Naira and this will only keep going worst looking at the economy from micro and macro perspective.

While in Nigeria, if you do not find a way to earn in dollar, you are destined to die poor. It is a mathematical certainty. It just might take time depending on the different level of our income. Except you run into the harbor of Politics(Nigeria owns gold mine) and good luck with that.....Cutting cost won’t save you, if you keep cutting cost very soon you will have nothing left to cut.

For Years I worked and was convinced witches are after my finances because I was always broke by mid month, then one day i opened spreadsheet and decided to outline all, i mean all my expenses against my income and it was obvious why I was always broke. I had to start cutting costs in as many things I could have to bring down the costs.

One can hardly save his Way out of poverty, especially a very low income earner. One just gotta increase his income by any means possible first. As you're reducing the bottom line (expenses), also hustle to increase the topline ( income).

To be frank with u, it's not ur saving culture that's the problem, it's ur earning that's super poor.
Secondly the economy is very bad hence, the high cost of everything. I don't even save. Just get a well paying job and u will notice ur little little efforts u have been putting up will yield alot for u.

My advice: Get better qualifications especially outside the shores of Naija and u have a higher chance of getting better paying jobs or better still, open ur own business.

Note: Being introverted does not make u less of a human being. Think and grow rich!!!

I come in peace!!!

Bitt, go and open another bank account. Ensure that this new account does not have atm card. Once salary comes, transfer 5k to the new account and lock up. On no condition should you withdraw from this account

Bro, i also face this. What helps me is that i tell my office accountant to always remove 5k from my salary for savings, before paying me. This way, i only manage the 45k paid to me.

You are not spending lavishly my dear... The Pay isn't good enough and country is messed up.

You earn 50k a monthly. Let's break it down

Let's assume you spend N1,000 on food daily (which isn't possible in this economy now), that is N30,000 in a month

Let's assume you spend just N200 on transport to work ( which I doubt), that is N6,000 a month

Let's assume you spend N500 on hair cut twice a month... That is N1,000

Let's assume you pay N2,000 Nepa bill a month (which I doubt)

Let's assume you spend total of N1,000 soap for washing your clothes monthly

Let's assume you spend N1,000 on data subscription monthly (which isn't possible)

Lets assume airtime purchase takes N1,000 too in a month

Let's assume offering OR goodwill to people takes a total of N1,000 from you in a month.

Let me stop there and sum everything up

That's is N43,000

Subtract N43,000 from N50,000 and you are left with N7,000

Mind you I over down sized your spending and removed alot of things.

So tell me how it is your fault? Country is messed up, money has no value and cost of living is too high.
