Is your poultry house protecting your chicks from cold, rain, wind and too much heat during brooding? Do you give your chicks enough space for their feeding,drinking and eating during brooding ?
If you really want to achieve zero or no mortality during brooding your chicks you need to put in a lot of work to give out the best housing to your chicks.

Brooding can be classified into natural and artificial brooding.
It is also a place of safety where baby chicks are kept warm, fed, watered and cared for until they are able to care for themselves.

Equipment used for artificial brooding are called brooders.
• Electricity through brooder lamps
• Charcoal through Coal pots and brooder pots
• Kerosene through kerosene lamps
• Gas through gas brooders. These are the latest in the brooder
market.

Thus, it is often difficult to maintain the body temperature properly for the first few weeks of life-as birds might be subjected to chilling and cold if you don’t properly introduce enough heating source for them.

10Things You must make sure of when brooding day old chicks.

1)Check the brooder for proper temperature 24 hours prior to the arrival of chicks

2)Switch on the brooder heating source several hours before the arrival of the chicks in order to maintain required brooding temperature.

3)Always observe and notice the reaction of the chicks to the heating source in order to find out if the temperature provided is not to high or too low.

4)During brooding, one can use a combination of brooding equipment.
For example I use charcoal as a source of heat during the day and electricity during the night. It all depends on your available resources.

5)You also need to keep the brooder floor warm by putting a layer of dry wood chippings.
These also help to absorb the chicken droppings thus ensuring that the brooder is dry at all times.
Never put saw dust in a brooder for chicks. Always put wood chippings or shavings.

6)You need to add vitamins or liquid paraffin to drinking water. Vitamins for chicks are important as they help the chicks gain weight faster, overcome stress due to handling as they are transported from the hatchery to the brooder.
Liquid paraffin helps in digestion of feed by the chicks and also helps prevent constipation in chicks too.

7)Keep the brooder temperature within the range of 30 degrees to 35 degrees decreasing at 4 degrees per week for up 3 weeks.

After two weeks, the chicks must have begin to acquire the ability to regulate their own temperature since they have started to have feathers.

9)Also there must be increased feed intake and general activity.

10 you need to expand the brooder space as the chicks grow to avoid overcrowding which can lead to death and poor feed intake by some of the chicks due to inaccessible feeders and drinkers.

Have You Ever Bought Day Old Broilers And After 2weeks Of Feeding You Found Out That Their Growth Is Not Uniform ?

It can be so painful and saddening after spending thousands of naira to buy birds, to buy feeds, to buy their vaccines and medications and their other essential needs and later discovered that after all those efforts your birds are not growing or some are growing more than the others or you just discovered that your birds are not uniform.I can tell that kind of situation can be so disheartening and depressing and make you want to give up on poultry farming. But wait hold on don’t give up there are lot of things you didn’t know and didn’t learn about before you started your poultry farm, and this lack of knowledge I bet you will cost you more than what you will have used to acquire the necessary knowledge before starting.

Now straight to business do you know broilers are not just broilers in Nigeria ? the hatcheries that sell broilers to us in Nigeria sells different types of breeds to us that’s why if you buy For example agrited (Ross 308) last month and this month you bought Zartech (Cobb 500) you will have different results. And if you don’t know about this before, have written a post about it just scroll up in the group to find the post.

HERE ARE THE 7REASONS WHY BIRDS DONT GROW UNIFORMLY.

1) The hatchery you ordered your birds from or the type of broiler breed you were supplied.- The first reason your birds don’t bring out quality is because they are not from quality hatcheries so if you buy birds from suppliers because the birds they advertised to you are far cheaper than the hatcheries that produces quality birds your birds are very likely not to grow uniformly . and you may end up with results you won’t like.

2)You don’t prioritize the first 5days of your birds.
While every day in the life of a broiler chicken is important to their growth and the first 5 days can make or mar the life of your chicks. In other words, what you do or fail to do in the first five days can impact your chicks throughout the rearing season, be it 6 weeks or more. So, it is important that you pay close attention to your chicks and give them the necessary attention needed to give them a good start.Get a good multivitamins,Antibiotics and Anticoccidiosis for them and also feed them professional or good starter feed for their first 7days.

3)Your male birds always grow fast and are always bigger than the female birds.
Males birds eat well and faster than female birds and because of this, even if your birds are healthy and you have done all things to make them have same weight they still won’t because the females will always weigh lower than the males

4)You don’t lay good foundation for your birds because you feed them low quality feeds even at Day 1 ? Oh no no don’t do this don’t ever do this because if you do you have already caused problems for them. Feeding you birds low quality feed starting from day one will make them give you results you don’t want to have in the next few weeks.


5)Another reason why you may later end up with non uniform birds is because of disease outbreak and this will occur if you Don’t care for your birds and don’t brood them with the required heat they need at day old. If you also give your birds low quality feeds they wont be able to build their immune system that will help them resist and fight against diseases and this will also make you spend more money on drugs and medications. If you brood your birds well you will spend less on their medications.

16 STEPS FARMERS TAKE IN BROODING DAY OLD CHICKS TO ENSURE THEIR BIRDS HAVE HIGH SURVIVAL RATE.

1)Upon chicks’ arrival, do the unboxing exercise as quickly as possible, count them and dip each chick’s beak into a waterer to be sure that it gets a drink.

2)While you are unboxing, check for deformed chicks and those with an unhealed navel. Treat them to prevent omphalitis.

3)Check for underweight chicks and separate them from the rest. They might end up being runts. Separating them will allow you to manage them properly, thus, giving them a better chance of survival.

4)Vaccinate them against Newcastle and Marek's diseases if they hasn’t been done at the hatchery.

5)Lunch them into their new environment and Observe the chicks closely and see how they respond to the heat.

6)The chicks’ behavior will tell you whether the brooder temperature is correct. If they huddle close to the heat source, it is too cold; if they crowd the brooder guard or crowd at angle 90 degrees of the space you put them. It is too hot! If they are evenly dispersed, you got the heating right.

7)Check the distribution of the chicks often for the first 2 weeks, and see that they have feed and water even at night. Watch the chicks every 30 minutes continuously for the first few days. If any is ill, remove such.

The first few days, chicks will pick at anything; they cannot tell a feeding area from the rest of the floor, so it is wise to have feed scattered over a large area. Put newspaper or cut cardboard boxes down on the floor and scatter feed on them to supplement the chick-sized feeders.

9)During the brooding stage, chicks will eat through the night since light is available continuously. They should never be without feed for more than 30 minutes at a time (the same is true for mature birds during daylight).

10)Spend time every day just observing the flock. As they grow, see if they are all about the same size and are putting out feathers at about the same rate.If so, the chicks probably are healthy, from good stock, and receiving a good feed. Watch for any inactive chicks. Those that standstill for more than 10 minutes are most likely sick.

11)On the third day, allow the chicks to finish the feed in the feeders. From then on, fill the feeders half full. If chicks are eating well, remove the paper or cardboard.

12)For the rest of the chickens’ lives, completely change their water every day at dawn and in the early afternoon, rinsing the waterers out as you do so. Chickens should have water available at all times.

13)On the fourth day, begin looking for signs of coccidiosis. If there is a serious outbreak, take immediate action. Be alert for coccidiosis until the flock is at least 12 weeks old. On the sixth day, be sure that there is evenly disperse grit (stone particles) in the feeders to supplement the ones in the commercial feed.

14)On the seventh day, the 1st Lasota vaccination is recommended.

15)On the twenty-first day, provide larger feeders.

16)On the eighty-fourth day, increase feed and water space. Begin a lighting
program, if appropriate.

COMMON MISTAKES LIVESTOCK FARMERS MAKE IN DRUG USAGE

While drug usage is being de-emphasized in advanced climes, Africa (Nigeria inclusive) is not prepared to even deploy antibiotics correctly.

In most developed economies, farm biosecurity measures remains the rule of thumb. The disorderly practice on this side of the globe makes the use of therapeutic agents inevitable.

Faulty Practices I Have Seen Includes:

1. Farmers deciding for themselves what medications to use based on previous history and experiences.

2. Prescription from a fellow livestock farmer based on personal guesses.

3. Prescription from untrained shop attendant or drug vendor.

4. Hasty prescription from a trained animal health personnel without proper diagnosis of the problem.

5. Unwillingness to access pharmaceutical intervention despite the absence of any biosecurity protocols.

6. Excessive and unbridled drug usage premised on the assumption that livestock thrive better on a barrage or plethora of medicines.

7. Multiple drug combinations intended to check all manifested signs.

8. Under-dosing of sick animals due to ignorance or a deliberate measure of austerity.

9. Over-dosing of sick animals to achieve 'accelerated' recovery.

10. Deciding for cheaper drug brands with doubtful efficacies.

Consequences of the aforementioned:

1. Multiple drug combinations may lead to drug to drug interactions

2. Drug interactions may lead to nullification, reduced efficacy or toxicity.

3. Growth depression could occur.

4. Abnormal body functions may be noticed.

An Outline Of Incongruent Drug Combinations:

1. Drugs like Gentamicin, Neomycin, etc., must not be combined with Penicillins.

2. Don't combine Enrofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin, etc., with Calcium or substances containing Calcium.

3. Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) in combination with Gentamicin, Neomycin etc could lead to kidney damage.

4. It is contra-indicated to combine Tetracyclines with Calcium compounds

5. Never concurrently administer Morphine with Atropine.

6. It is unsafe to combine herbal preparations with synthetic drugs.

7. Do not combine Sulpha based drugs with multivitamins.

8. It is not right to combine multivitamins with herbal preparations.

9. It is safer to administer Enrofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin etc without multivitamins.

10. Do not administer biocides like Iodine compounds less than 7days after vaccine administration.

Drugs administration is a sensitive matter, always consult with your Veterinarian for directions.
