What are the issues with the Online/Virtual learning classes? The main thing is the lack of personal feel. Effective communication in humans is not just sound. It includes cues, body language, context, etc. Also, unlike physical learning where you can approach the lecturers and class mates and further discuss after lecturers, this us usually not easy with virtual classes. I also personally do not fancy virtual programs, but one has to adapt and accept it. For you, cost is also another factor, added to availability (time). However, if you can save up the cost and create the time, then go for the in-person/physical course. It provides a one-on-one touch and feel. It also allows for better networking with other participants. Additionally, remember that online trainings etc. are still not that respected or well valued in Nigeria. Bear in mind though that eventually, it is your skill, knowledge and experience backed by the certificate that matters. Chose the learning method that can best give you the best edge in acquiring the SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, NETWORK and EXPERIENCE. The certificate will come whether it is virtual or in-person. |

Good evening, everyone! I must say that finding this thread had made a tremendous impact on my life and career because I've learned a lot. I'm a Trainee HSE officer in a gas company, and career growth has been my priority. I’m at a stage in my life and my career in which I feel I could benefit from a little mentoring and guidance. So, I would humbly request a mentorship opportunity from any of our experienced HSE officers here. I'd really appreciate it if anyone is interested in taking me as a mentee. Thank you! |

Hello Professionals, I want us to discuss something I have observed especially from people having any of the level 6 safety qualifications should share their experience with us. I noticed that most employers emphasis on having NEBOSH International diploma than NVQF level 6 or OTHM level 6 qualifications. I think they prefer the NEBOSH diploma to other level 6 certification. Please enlighten and share with us, and probably guide us with information |

Juwon21: From my knowledge of staffing or Human Resources recruitment, upping the requirement helps in seiving and filtering out many applicants. And in the world of today, paper certifications are generally viewed and seen as to imply better knowledge and skill set, hence better staff performance. Of course this is not always the case. I DO NOT HAVE NEBOSH OR ISPON. None of them do I have. However, I challenge any HSE ENGINEER ANYWHERE ON EARTH & EVEN THOSE ON MARS. With my BSC and double M.Sc. on HSE Sciences and Engineering, with my network of professionals in various fields and stages of life, and my work experience, I do not think any NEBOSH IDP holder comes close or has any edge over me. Secondly, where proper personnel staffing it to be done properly, job roles, duties and functions are usually matched with educational and professional certifications and experiences. This plays a great role In successfully engaging the right personnel for an open role. So to me it is two things: 1. They look at the current job roles in their industry and company. They reviewed their processes, hazards and risks and realized that for understanding of these and their management and monitoring , the perfect candidate must have undergone NEBOSH IDP which perhaps covers this area of risk very well. 2. They are looking for a way to streamline the number of applicants. Recruitment can be expensive and tedious. Thank you. 1 Like |

Juwon21:I believe it's simply recognition and trust over the years. Like @10thTenthMan all these certificates proves nothing really but we need it to fill out our CVs and show we have the knowledge. My manager failed his ISO 45001 exam. He came back, trained everyone in our department back in 2020, we were audited and we passed excellently well. Experience is key. 1 Like |

Juwon21: And I have elaborately answered this. But it seems I need to summarize my response a bit: 1. The curricular is NOT THE SAME. NEBOSH IDP is more advanced in content and knowledge than your Nigerian ISPON and the NEBOSH IGC. If I, as a Manager, believes that the theoretical knowledge I want my new staff to posses comes from NEBOSH International Diploma, then I’ll Make it a mandatory requirement and advise HR as such. When the advert comes out, it will state that only those with NEBOSH Idip should apply. 2. It is because NEBOSH Diploma is hard to get and not everyone has it. Hence it is used as a requirement to ensure that too many people do not apply. It is used for screening. Imagine posting a HSE vacancy advertisement for an oil and gas company and requesting only for ISPON. You will be flooded with millions of applications. 3. When you compare some of these other trainings , NEBOSH is like a silver standard (I.e assuming the American BCSP is the gold standard). It is well recognized and respected. It is fast becoming a global benchmark for professional HSE certification. |

I wouldn't advise anyone with little or no professional experience to register for NEBOSH online class. The exams are scenario based and it's not a walk in the park. You are going to need every information you can digest physically from the tutor including the style of answering these questions and this can be difficult via the online platform. Most online classes are pre-recorded; time, internet and electricity constraint is also a concern and never forget you will be submitting a risk assessment report (IG2) with either fail or pass criteria. This piece is just my opinion as a Tutor 3 Likes |

I have written examination up to masters level. Trust me NEBOSH OBE examinations is the most difficult examination I had ever written. Like someone rightly said the examination is not a work in the park. You need all the necessary concentration during the 24hours. So I not suggest online classes for you. Especially if your HSE foundation is fragile. It a scenario base examination. Try and attend the physical class. If you have the time. Considering the cost of sitting for the exam. Best of luck. 1 Like |

smartzee01: Without a Proper Mentee or Mentoring Plan, it may turn out not to help you and the mentor much. E.g What competencies would you like to develop? What skill set would you like to develop and acquire? What certifications do you wish to acquire? What sector are you looking to work in? What are of specialization do you prefer? What is your goal eventually ? If you have drawn up such a plan. Then let us know. That my be determine if any of the “elders” here can provide the level mentorship you need. Good luck. |

10thTenthMan: Thank you for the response, sir. I'd love to develop competencies and skills in fields of occupational health and safety (hazard management, risk assessment, emergency response planning, incident investigation, HSE and leadership culture, etc.) Later, I'd love to move to broader area such as safety, risk, and reliability engineering. I have the Ispon HSE level 3 and the general certification (not a member yet). I plan to enroll for NEBOSH IGC this year. I have other online certifications like IOSH managing safely. I have been taking the OSHA 132 Hours courses. I hope to eventually obtain the NEBOSH Idip and Masters in the near future. I'm currently working with a gas company as a graduate HSE officer. 1 Like 1 Share |
