I’ve had this Tpms check system warning on my car for a while now. The car is a 2008 Lexus is250. I don’t actually like any warning lights showing up on my dashboard. So after much procrastination, I have decided to fix this for once. 2 Likes

When this warning shows up, you either have one or more Tpms sensors that has gone bad (either the battery or chip is bad) or the tpms control unit is bad. You have to scan to find out what is wrong. Most likely, you have bad sensors. There are several ways to do this but I’m doing this using techstream. I also bought four toks tpms sensors just incase. 1 Like

Hooked up my techstream to scan what the issue is. I couldn’t get the techstream to work on my windows 10 pc so I had to install windows xp using virtual machine. I scanned and saw that ID 2 was dead. Good thing it’s just one sensor so I get to keep 3 spare sensors. 2 Likes

One minor issue is identifying which of the tyres has ID 2. You can read live data and deflate each of the tyres and check change in pressure. There is a faster way to do this but I don’t have the tool. From the picture, you can tell there is no data from ID 2 as it says N/A. The spare tyre is ID 5 which does not have any sensor installed. 1 Like

toyfat:ID 2 from factory should be front passenger side? Just a guess though |

Or why not use a tyre pressure gauge to check tyre pressure and compare reading with data on your scan? That way you can single out the tyre with ID 2. 1 Like |

Next step is to remove the bad sensor from the control unit and program the new sensor. You have to copy out all the ID numbers and identify the one you want to swap. Once you start the process, you have 5 minutes to impute all 4 ID numbers. You can find the ID number on the sensor body. You can do this before actually putting the sensor in the tyre. Lexus actually reads sensors from a distance. This way, you can actually do a tpms bomb (putting all sensors in a plastic, inflate to the right psi and put in your trunk. You can check videos on YouTube ) and put ordinary rubber stems in your tyre. You will not need to have 8 sensors for your winter and summer tyres. 1 Like

Kingdemmu:Yes it is. I rotate my tyres often so i lost track which is which. |
Re: Diy Tpms Replacement by toyfat: 9:15pm On Feb 21, 2021 |
Kingdemmu:You are right. Deflating is faster and more accurate for me. In the process of screwing and unscrewing my gauge, i'd lose some pressure. Reading will no longer be accurate. |

Swapped it in and the control unit now reads sensor ID 2. The pressure is low cos the sensor is just sitting in the car and not in the tyre yet. Remember ID 5 is the spare tyre which has no sensor in it. 1 Like

Next step is to swap the sensor in the tyre. I used my jack and a plank to break the tyre seal. My SUV has a good ground clearance so it was helpful. I deflated the tyre and swung to action. You need 11mm socket to loosen the sensor from top. I couldn’t snap much pictures here cos I needed both hands and one leg to avoid stories that touch . Vulcanizer will charge less than 500 naira for this but I just wanted to do it myself. 1 Like

Applied the tyre sealant that came with my pump (my tyre doesn’t eat fufu ), Inflated back to the right PSI and mounted tyre. Moment of truth. 3 Likes

Fired up and I’m seeing low tyre again. . ID 4 was low. Pumped it back up and boom, cluster is clean again the way I like it. . 1 Like
