We may have experienced one thing or the other while carrying out our activities in work places owned by foreign (Chinese, Indians, Lebanese, American, British etc) individuals and we definitely must have experienced either sweet or harsh conditions. As for me, my Boss is fond using the statements below which she is always serious with-

'Nigeria has plenty workers (many jobless people looking for jobs), if you cannot work, collect your salary and go!' In cases like this, i just try to put in my best and make sure i seek better opportunities.

I have also noticed that they (Chinese) have no job descriptions for their jobs, you are made to work in all departments at once or at intervals and some do not have a well described closing time.
Also, they do not care your dressing type, just do your job diligently and seriously.

Chinese would teach you time management, you call them master, disregard for your health and we'll being.

Indians would teach you how to manage resources no matter how little (They are racist)

Lebanese treat you like pieces of trash

Sri Lanka they are coming soon

Americans, damn the best place to work in my honest opinion, they work hard and party hard, you call them by their first names, excellent working environment

British, they don't joke with vacation/ or paternity or maternity leave. No pressure at all.

Nigerian depending on the type of company, you work like Jackie, no leave and can be sacked for the most minutest of things (avoid businesses owned by pastors). In some, you only get leave when probably there is a demise of your parents or you getting married.

Those Nigerians that get to travel abroad and now working there. One would think they will do better than the typical Nigerian employers having seen how it's done in the first world countries. But!!!

Honestly, my best boss happened to be an American of Indian descent. Quite young and very intelligent. The good thing is, he's very westernized which is very good... no 'Indian' BS. At ~35yrs of age, he's a Sr. Director in a fortune 4 corp. I enjoyed working for him and he even let me take my work to 9ja for months while visiting family members.

Fresh out of NYSC in 2018, I started a remote job in the blockchain industry as a social media moderator. I was hired by a Canadian firm but my department was headed by a boss from Sri Lanka.

Honestly this Sri Lanka guy is too good, Infact whatever I am today he played a great part in it. Cool headed guy, respects every workers. If a worker proves stubborn or incompetent, he will discharge him or her in the most polite way.

Moving into 2019, the company packed up due to bad management from the top management board. I stayed out of work for more than 3 months. Somehow the Sri Lanka guy had special interest in me.

He hit me up one day and ask if I had interest to become a blockchain content developer and writer. I responded positively even though I wasn't even proficient in writing. Omo! This guy started off by giving me writing gigs and teaching me a lot of writing styles and all the technical jargons. Within 6 months, I had already hit the runway and flying. We did a lot of content together, till date we are still in contact - does one or two jobs for him once in a while.

The big break is that, the blockchain content field he led me into recently landed me a job with another firm for N700k monthly salary.

It's been 4 years now, still, me and this Sri Lanka guy never meet face to face but we communicate every week grin

They are still good foreign bosses out there.

British and Americans are the best, but those chinese and Indians, run for your life. Almost every month, there is a post on Nairaland about how they treat their employees like slaves. Some Chinese even practice kungfu and scissors kick on their African employees grin

Magnificent!

In my experience working remotely with foreign clients, I have noticed some things;

1) The Sir/Ma doesn’t cut it for them. They prefer being called by their first names. “Hello Andrew”, “Morning Ms Avery”

2) You can ask questions, but don’t ask every question. They are willing to teach, but don’t overplay it. Sometimes research and take initiative.

3) Europeans especially the Brits do not like excessive work. Just do some and leave some for the next day.

4) Americans do not mind if you work overtime. In fact, 40hrs a week is small thing in their books.

5) Don’t be moved by their niceties. A lot of times, it is just formality.

6) You don’t need the fake accent. Speak clearly and they would actually hear you. Most of them do! cheesy

7) They are huge on efficiency. You think you are working in Nigeria? Try working with a foreigner and you would know why you friends abroad are stingy. You work for every dollar.

8- Americans pay the best most times.

9) Avoid Asians. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, whatever. Just avoid them if you can.

10) They know Nigeria. They have heard the good and of course the BAD! If you are nice to them, they open up. The first step is to start asking questions about Nigeria.

Working with the Chinese will put your english fluency in jeopardy... you will forget your lexicons and replace dem with "i go , i come, i eat, i bath etc...

all these Third world multinationals sef with their useless extreme capitalist tendencies still go cost you IELTS if you spend above 3 years with them.

I have worked with Foreign Bosses: Indian, American, Lebanese, British and currently Italian.

Amongst all, I give it to the American boss. He's open to teach, politely correct your errors and very sociable. Less I forget, Fridays are for Pizza cheesy

I work with a German INGO and my experience with Germans is so amazing. They're very focused on result and performance and wouldn't mind giving you all the resources (finance inclusive) to deliver. You must also justify resources spent. Health, wellness, vacation and family is non-negotiable. And yeah, I had taken my German colleague on a tour round the south-west on his last trip to Nigeria and he had wheat and vegetable in one of the famous amala joints in Ibadan cheesy. In my view, Germans are very welcoming to Nigerians but we need to do better on our impression in the Global scene.

I think Germans are closest to Americans in lifestyle. No wonder they're allies and partners in international politics (I know right).
