The challenges of mars include
1) its very cold, can reach -170 degree Celsius at night, while in the day time it could reach -20 degree Celsius.

2) Mars does not have a lot of atmosphere, so a human has to wear a pressurized suit, or has to be in a pressurized environment like a dome or astronaut home.

3) Mars does not have an active molten core , unlike the earth, it does not have a protective Magnetic shield, so its is exposed to the solar radiation or solar storms.

4) There is flowing water on mars , but there is ice on mars, needs to be heated before it can be useful.

5) The type of soils on mars may not be high yield.

Earth is paradise compared to mars. But does not stop the space race.

Mars might be colonized before the end of the century, indeed the technology to pull this off already exists(albeit overly expensive).
Venus and Mercury are out of the question. The Venusian climate being akin to an over-heated, hyper-pressurized oven and the complete lack of an atmosphere in Mercury not to speak of the fact that it's too close to the sun(indeed the reason why Mercury has no atmosphere is because it was literally blown off by the suns solar winds). Jupiter and Saturn are interesting not because they are habitable(they are gas giants and habitability is out of the question) but the satellites(moons) that revolve about them. Two exciting examples are Europa and Titan. Europa has an inner crust made out of water and could very well host small marine life(although not proven) while not only does Titan contain an inner crust of water but there is some evidence that seems to suggest that a life-like process is occurring on it.
