I doubt the Soludo admin' would be the ones to finance the project. It would either be wholly privately financed on say a BOT basis, or done on a PPP basis with gov't providing the land.

I for one can't wait to take a leisurely airconditioned train ride from say Awka to Onitsha for shopping! These are things other countries achieved more than a century ago and now take for granted!
Let those private companies finance a good road and toll it rather than what we currently have.
Stop typing fantasy here, where is that Kigali roads and European roads you people are proposing for obiano to build? The pioneer have even disappeared from this thread since obiano handed over to Soludo.
We must tackle one before two. You never ride from Onitsha to Nnewi on a solid dual carriageway na for train you wan ride?
Wake up this is not Asia.

Anambra is the only state in SE that has 10 lanes superhighway, 2 cloverleaf interchange, 2 Niger bridges, multiple flyovers and it is paining you bitter nwa nsukka. Anambra urban and rural areas have far better dual and single lane roads than your backward enugu state will ever have. Just Anambra international airport dualcarriageways beats all the roads in your backward useless worthless enugu state. Tell your governor to fix the dilapidated roads in Enugu township. You don't even have ordinary portable drinking water in Enugu but you want to compete with Anambra. Take your envy and frustration to enugu thread.

It's good to dream but it's better when the dream is within the limits of one's capacity.
The Onitsha 3-3 to otuocha road seriously needs dualization because of massive housing development going on in that axis but someone is here dreaming of rail network across the LGAs in Anambra.
Dualization of the above route can even make driving to the umueri airport from inside Onitsha easier because you won't need to follow Onitsha-Enugu expressway.
Delta state government opens some part of Asaba that is close to the airport with good dual carriageway with sidewalk and street lights that's why Top rank Hotel is building there second structure there which will be 8-strorey building. Many hotels that is high-rise are being put there.

This is all well and good, but they need to get past Abuja first! Had Anambra (with its abundance of human and natural resources) been a country in its own right, it would be amongst the top 5 economies in Africa! You can take that to the bank!

As things stand now, some envious twerp with a superiority complex will either sit on the necessary approvals or codedly act behind the scenes to frustrate the states airport gaining approval for int’l flights! Think i’m kidding?…..See the battle Obiano had to put up to get the state recognised for 13% derivation! Even at that, their evil minds just couldn’t allow the state get away with what God blessed them with so they found a way to add Kogi into the mix just to water down any benefits due Anambra!

I believe the Soludo admin’ is more than capable of seeing Anambra to the promised land….even with the present unfair political-economy and constitution in place! However, i would wait at least till Buhari leaves next year before expecting the state gov’t to have the peace, security and federal cooperation it needs to reposition the state for rapid socio-economic development!

The best outcome in 2023…not just for Anambra, but all states and regions in the country would be a Obi presidency! The second best would be a Atiku win! If by omission or commission Tinubu somehow manage to find his way into Aso Rock, i’m under no illusions that the imported insecurity presently going on in the south-east, and the regions marginalisation and unfair treatment by the federal gov’t will continue in one form or another!

On point

Dude, you don’t arm-twist private capital to invest where they have no interest to! The premise of my position on Anambra having a rail network is built on it being private sector driven…on a BOT or PPP basis! If the Soludo admin’ can find international or local investors willing to finance this laudable project then how is that a bad thing!? The project will give industry, commerce and tourism a boost and would be a money spinner for the investors for years to come! It would take pressure off the roads too! Local transport entrepreneurs can also be invited to form a consortium to buy into the project…that’s if they entertain fears a rail network could eat into their profits!

If you’ve been listening to Governor Soludo…even before he became governor, he has made it clear his gov’t intends to use private capital to finance most of the big ticket infrastructure the state needs as the money to do this just isn’t available presently!

You talking of private capital building roads in the state and tolling them first before looking at financing a rail network shows you’re either being mischievous or you lack a proper understanding and appreciation of the issues! I’m sure you’d be the first to be up in arms if all newly built highways in Anambra are tolled! See the mutterings of disapproval that greeted the building of toll booths at the 2nd Niger bridge!

Governor Soludo Makes Headway With Digital Tax system, Hosts Transport Operators/Owners, and Market Union Leaders in Anambra

The executive governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma, Soludo, earlier today in Awka, held an interactive session with the leaders and stakeholders of private sector transportation and market unions in the state.

The session was geared towards the presentation and description of the reformed digital revenue collection system to the union leaders as the best technology-driven approach towards tax collection in the state.

Speaking at the event, the governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, stated among other things, that the reformed digital revenue collection system which will commence on the first day of July 2022 was designed to cut-down heavy taxation as well as shut down the loopholes and illegal windows through which the funds meant for the development of the state are siphoned into private pockets and enterprises. He maintained that this new system which would be technology-driven will aid his administration in running a people-oriented and transparent governance which will be instrumental to achieving the vision of his administration in making Anambra a more livable and prosperous environment.

Earlier, the duo of the State Commissioner for Transport and the Chairman of the Anambra Board of Internal Revenue; Hon. Barr (Mrs) Pat Igwebuike and Mr Richard Madiebo respectively, who took out time to give vivid explanation of the new system of tax collection to the union leaders, maintained that the new approach would simplify procedures, reduce the compliance burden on taxpayers and accelerates an efficient, streamlined and transparent collection of taxes in the state.

Some of the unions leaders who spoke at length eulogized the governor and his new system and style of governance which they said, would fast-track the development of the state. They stressed that their members have long been sensitized on the importance of tax payment as and when due, stressing that they would support the governor in his new system of governance geared towards making Anambra a more livable and prosperous home land.

SOLUDO MEETS WITH TRANSPORT AND MARKET UNION EXECUTIVE MEMBERS, ABOLISHES COLLECTION OF GOVERNMENT REVENUE BY PROXY

Government of Anambra State will commence implementation of a new tax and levy regime in Anambra markets, roads and parks as from July 1, 2022.

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo gave the disclosure at a one day town hall meeting held at Women's Development Center, Awka with Transport and Market Union Executive Members in Anambra State.

Governor Soludo warned anyone posing as a government revenue collector in any part of the state, to desist forthwith or face the full wrath of the law, as his administration is making frantic efforts to stop leakages of government revenue which usually end up in private pockets.

Governor Soludo said Anambra is an alpha state, he expressed optimism that in line with his campaign promises, the state will be peaceful, liveable and prosperous.

The Governor emphasized that Anambra should ideally be a reference point in all ramifications as one of the developed States within the federation

Governor Soludo further pointed out that the new tax regime has become imperative as the era of revenue generation through the sale of crude oil is gradually phasing out. He revealed that since February this year, no remittance had been done from the NNPC into the federation account as money acruable from the sale of crude oil is gradually dwindling

He stressed however that henceforth, public parks owned by the government will be directly managed by government, directing that caretaker committee members in Anambra markets are forbidden from collecting revenue on behalf of government.

The Governor pleaded with those who will be affected by the new system to consider the larger picture of making Anambra succeed for the greater good of the people. He however quickly offered to provide alternatives for them.

Governor Soludo called on the different unions to mobilize their members for action, stating that his administration will not hesitate to enforce the new directive for the general well-being of the state economy.

According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Barrister Pat Igwebuike, who also addressed the gathering, said Governor Soludo is committed to the cause of road transporters. She asked them to join hands with the Soludo government to salvage the already battered system which has gross adverse effects on the state economy. She called on the members of the Union who have not acquired their identification, to do so as quickly as possible

For the Commissioner for Homeland Affairs, Chief Chikodi Anarah, said Anambra used to be the pride of place for business operators, every day of the week, but decried the low turnout and patronage which has characterized 'Mondays' due to the Sit at home syndrome. He said this unfortunate development is making business owners to relocate their businesses to neighbouring states.

Chairman of Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Richard Madiebo explained that the present administration has designed the revenue framework in such a way that people can now pay their taxes and levies seamlessly as well as eliminate multiple taxation.

Mr. Madiebo further said that all taxes and levies payers in the state will be issued with a digital Identification. He disclosed that commercial vehicle operators who make daily payment, will not be charged to pay anymore in any public park, adding that five percent of the revenue generated by any union, will be given to them to manage the respective business places.

Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor, Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Paschal Agbodike, Secretary to the State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, and an array of market leaders attended the function which featured question, answer and contribution session.

How ONITSHA PORT will generate over N23 billion in 30 years – Minister
“We are exceptionally proud that at long last we have achieved this.”
ByAgency Report June 30, 2022 2 min read

The Minister of State for Transportation, Gbemisola Saraki, says the Onitsha River port is positioned to generate over N23 billion to the federal government in 30 years.

Ms Saraki, during the signing of the concession of the port on Thursday in Abuja, said the port had lots of economic benefits to the country.

According to her, the port will among other things, ensure the 60 per cent shipped cargoes which hitherto goes through Onne port to Onitsha will be transported directly.

“So there is a lot of economic growth, there is going to be a creation of wealth, creation of jobs, security and greater development.

“We hope it is a catalyst for other river ports, so that it will decongest other ports and bring about growth.

“You know the traffic on our road, the state of our roads and the tankers and freight being moved on our roads have now reduced.

“And so it is a very good thing and we are exceptionally proud that at long last we have achieved this,” Ms Saraki said.

According to the minister, the Baro, Lokoja and Oguta ports, which are at different stages of completion, will be considered after the Onitsha port.

Gbemisola Saraki. [Photo credit: Facebook page of Gbemisola Saraki]
“The most important thing is that we already have interest from potential investors who want to actually take over this.”
The Managing Director, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), George Moghalu, said the Onitsha port would reduce the volume of cargoes transported via roads to the South-east.

Mr Moghalu said: “Our roads are not designed to carry the weight they are carrying.

“Over 60 per cent of the containers that arrive Nigeria through Onne, Tin Can or Apapa port end up in Onitsha and what it translates is that these containers are moved by trailers.

“Onitsha port is very well positioned to play a key role in addressing this if opportunities are provided.”

He commended the concessioners for their efforts to bring in investors into the country.

Mr Moghalu expressed hope that the concession would open up opportunities for other ports in the country to be given due considerations.

Meanwhile, the Acting Director-General, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), Michael Ohiani, said the 30 years concession would generate over N23 billion to the government.

He said: “After rigorous procurement process, Universal Elysium Consortium emerged as the preferred concessionaire for the concession of Onitsha River Port.

“Over the 30-year concession period, the concessionaire will be responsible for all the activities and maintenance of the port.

“The asset along with the entire infrastructure will be returned to the authorities at the end of the concession period.

“The redevelopment of Onitsha River Port is seen as a boost to commercial activities in the South-east.

“Importers and traders from the commercial towns of Onitsha, Nnewi, Aba and Ogbete-Enugu see the relaunch as a welcome development from the federal government.

“The port will serve as an alternative mode of transporting goods from Lagos and Port Harcourt by road,” he said
