If the “beyond a reasonable doubt” standard was required to charge then we won’t need trials or plea deals because the accused would already be found guilty. If there’s probable cause to believe a crime occurred then prosecutors/grand jury can charge/indict.

I agree with your logic. But in climes like the UK and the US, the evidence amassed by the prosecution must be of such nature that will be able to meet the standard of proof in a criminal case. Otherwise, it will be regarded as a waste of tax payers money. That is why, most cases in the UK end at the investigation stage.
However, I agree that probable cause can be sufficient to charge a person but the prosecution must also be ready to meet the standard required by law.
With regard to not needing trials or taking pleas, it is a matter of constitutional right that a person be put to trial before a court of competent jurisdiction. So even if you see someone killing a person, record his video etc, he will still be tried despite all the evidence.

The government lawyer(the prosecutor) will twist the stories to fit his or her narratives. It is up to the Defense attorney to poke holes in the prosecutor's charges. It is a battle. The prosecutor's job is to ensure that they are convicted. The Defense attorney's job is to counter him/her, provide legal counsel to Ekweremadu and arrange a plea deal for them if necessary. Some prosecutors can be very aggressive.

Either way, I wish them luck. Pray never to be used in the Chess play in a legal system. Do I feel sorry for the Ekweremadus? No! The level of impunity in Nigeria is outrageous.

Several sites have mentioned 21 years as the age in contention; even Vanguard Nigeria published a snapshot of the boy's passport (shown below) which clearly shows the DoB as Oct 2000. But somehow someway, in the world of 1stGenAmerican, Vanguard Nigeria must be inferior to a UK tabloid called dailymail.co.uk. The words of the almighty UK tabloid must be equivalent to the words of the Uxbridge court; heck! their words must be equivalent to the words of the Her Majesty the Queen.
