WAFCON 2022: Contenders, Pretenders, And Participants

The 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will kick off on July 2 till July 23 in Morocco with 12-teams participating in the tournament for the first time in history.

The 12-teams have been grouped into three groups of four teams each, with the top two teams automatically qualifying for the semi-finals and the four semi-finalists making it to Australia/New Zealand 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Ahead of the tournament, it is pertinent to examine the title contenders and the teams that will be at the tournament as participants.

This section basically takes a look at the two teams of countries that are expected to contend for the title come July 23, 2022; Nigeria and South Africa.

Contenders

Nigeria (Super Falcons)
The nine-time Champions is the only team to have featured at every edition of the tournament winning nine (9) out of the previous 11 editions.

The Super Falcons won 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018 editions losing the other two editions; 2008 and 2012 to Equatorial Guinea, which will be participating at this year’s edition.

The Nigerian side will attempt a record-extending 10th title in Morocco with its blend of talented, young, and naturalized players.

Coach Randy Waldrum has invited 23 foreign-based and two players from the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership for this tournament which is the coach’s first competition since he replaced Thomas Dennerby.

Experienced and age-less captain, Onome Ebi and FC Barcelona Femeni forward who recently won the top goal scorer prize in the Spanish Primera Iberdrola, Asisat Oshoala will play crucial roles for the only African team to have qualified for every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Leicester City FC Women’s defender, Ashleigh Plumptre who naturalised from England to Nigeria will also play a pivotal role alongside Nigeria’s attack force of Rasheedat Ajibade, Ifeoma Onumonu, Monday Gift, Uchenna Kanu, and Polish Ekstraliga Women top goal scorer, Macleans Chinonyerem.

Pundits and Super Falcons supporters believe the only team that can stop the Super Falcons from winning the WAFCON La Decima is the “Super Falcons”. Nigeria will face one of its foes, South Africa in the opening Group C game before playing debutants; Burundi and Botswana in a bid to make it to the semi-final.


South Africa (Banyana Banyana)
South Africa by records is the third most successful WAFCON team after Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea and are favorite to dethrone the nine-time Champions.

Banyana Banyana has reached the final of this tournament five times in 1995, 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2018 losing all the finals to Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea respectively. The Desiree Ellis tutored side will attempt to go a step ahead to lift the trophy this time around after narrowly losing the last edition to Nigeria on penalties in 2018.

Crucial to this quest is former CAF Women’s Player of the year winner and Atletico Madrid forward, Thembi Kgatlana. Thembi scored six (6) league goals with three (3) assists in 25 Spanish Primera Iberdrola games for Atletico Madrid in the 2021/2022 season. The team will also rely on Mamelodi Sundowns FC Ladies forward, Melinda Kgadiete, and experienced defender, Janine Van Wijk who is the most capped women’s player in Africa.

As far as current (Head-to-Head) form between Nigeria and South Africa is concerned, the Banyana Banyana remains the best bet to defeat Nigeria at WAFCON 2022. South Africa is unbeaten in its last three games against Nigeria during regulation time. The team defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the opening Group game of WAFCON 2018, played out a 0-0 draw with the Super Falcons in the final before losing on penalties, and recently defeated Nigeria 4-2 in Lagos during the 2021 Aisha Buhari Cup.

Winning this year’s WAFCON will ensure that the Banyana Banyana dethrone Nigeria and become the third team to clinch the title after Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea. Whether this will come to reality, time will tell.

Pretenders

Two (2) teams fall into this category of pretenders with chances of winning the title but after Nigeria and South Africa; Cameroon and host, Morocco.


Cameroon (Indomitable Lionesses)
Cameroon has reached the final of this tournament three times in 2004, 2014, and 2016), losing all to Nigeria. A 5-0 defeat in 2004 was followed by back-to-back losses (2-0 and 1-0) to Nigeria in 2014 and 2016 on home soil.

The team will attempt to out-muscle the likes of Nigeria, South Africa, and Morocco for the title which might be the Indomitable Lionesses’ first after losing the final three times to Nigeria. Coach Gabriel Zabo will rely on the experience of CSKA Moscow’s Aboudi Onguéné Gabrielle and Inter Milan’s Ajara Nchout Njoya for goals at the tournament.

Aboudi Onguene has scored two goals for CSKA Moscow in the 2022 Russian women’s league while Ajara Nchout Njoya scored eight goals with two assists in 18 Italian Serie A games for Inter Milan which finished outside the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) slots in the fifth position at the end of the 2021/2022 season.

Defensively, Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title-winning goalkeeper Bawou Ange Gabrielle of Bayelsa Queens, alongside Rivers Angels’ Omboudou Brigitte and Gotham FC’s Johnson Estelle Laura have huge roles to play to prevent the likes of South Africa and hosts, Morocco from penetrating the defence line .

Cameroon will face Zambia, Tunisia, and debutant, Togo in Group B with the title and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification in sight.


Morocco (Atlas Lionesses)

Host, Morocco will be making its third appearance at the WAFCON, failing to make it out of the group stage of the previous two appearances in 1998 and 2000.

Since then, women’s football in Morocco has gotten a boost and positive twist as the Under 17 (U-17) women’s national team recently qualified for India 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, becoming the first North African women’s national team to qualify for the World Cup.

The Atlas Lionesses can follow that suit if it makes it out of Group A against Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Uganda. The Reynald Pedros tutored team showed a glimpse of what it can offer at the 2021 Aisha Buhari Cup with two games against Cameroon and Mali which saw the North African side avoid any defeat; beating the Indomitable Lionesses 1-0 thanks to Fatima Tagnaout’s goal and settling for a 0-0 draw with Mali.

The team will rely on the player cohesion of Moroccan Champions, ASFAR FC to challenge the contenders for the title. The likes of Khadija Er-Rmichi, Fatima Tagnaout, Najat Badri, Ghizlane Chebbak, Sofia Bouftini, Ghizlane Chhiri, and other ASFAR FC players are expected to play pivotal roles for the North African side.


Participants
The other eight teams in this tournament fall under the participants’ category as they have little or no chance of challenging for the title and will have to make do with World Cup qualifications.

Uganda is making its second appearance at the tournament after a group stage finish at its maiden appearance in 2000.

There are four debutants at this Tournament; Burundi, Burkina Faso, Togo, and Botswana. A World Cup qualification for any of the four debutants will be a dream come true.

Copper Queens of Zambia, still basking in the euphoria of last Olympic showings will also try to pick a World Cup qualification alongside Senegal, and Tunisia.

As we look forward to the tournament, be rest assured of a beautiful and competitive game of women’s football in Africa where the pitch suffer at the end of the tournament.

Aisha Falode in her response promised to ensure total harmony in the team’s camp as Leader of Delegation, with the aim of encouraging the Super Falcons win their tenth title and also qualify for the World Cup in Australia among other accolades at Morocco 2022.

We know the major focus of all the teams coming to Morocco is to defeat the Super Falcons of Nigeria even if subsequently they don’t win the cup, because of the dominance of the Nigerian team, but, bad for all the eleven teams competing, we won’t allow them.

For Nigeria, as defending champions, we are going to Morocco with the trophy and by hard work, dedication, and grace of God, we shall come back with the trophy and the tenth title after playing in Morocco as one family. With this spirit, the team will surely play as one unit, one family, with one love, the chemistry to win all games, and the spirit of Nigeria.”

If I were Coach Randy Waldrum Christy Ucheibe will start ahead of Otu and Chikwelu at defensive midfield as she's more combative and work tirelessly... Even at her young age she comes in with a lot of experience playing topflight football... This is a player who have grown from U17,U20 and now the Superfalcons... Let's keep our head high..

SA lost to Zambia 3-0 with the barely mobile central defence they have. This is probably the best prepared Super falcons team in a long time. Played almost 10 top grade games this year. At least the coach picked a good blend too. If they stay injury free, it will be hard to beat them.

Ohale and Ashley in that defence are a different class from the Ogbonnas who played at the Aisha Buhari's cup. Alozie is of course not a natural defender but she makes up for this with her attacking play.
We are certainly gonna do better than what we did at the Aisha Buhari's cup.

Thinking out loud here...
The key to besting the SA team is neutralizing their midfield. That seems to be their strongest suite and where their plays originate from.
If Randy is able to do this, by flooding the midfield with 5 players, it would help make the game a lot easier for us. Specifically, playing a 3-5-2 formation will help us accomplish this. He can start off with this formation and then switch up, as the game progresses and as Ellis adjusts her strategy also.
My suggested starting lineup will be the following:

Oluehi - Ohale, Onome, Plumptre - Otu, Ucheibe - Payne, Rash, Ordega - Oshoala, Onumonu

**looks like Nnadozie might be on suspension due to yellow card accumulation (vs. Ghana and Ivory Coast, per Coach Randy).
We do have the luxury of an extremely deep enough bench to alter the game as we please.

The last edition saw only one hattrick and it was bagged by Nigerian Superstar, Asisat Oshoala vs Equatorial Guinea in the group stage.

South Africa since 2002 have produced 4 different Hatrrick scorers (Phewa, Mgcoyi, Matlou, Dlamini).

Nigeria boasts the highest ofcos with 4 hattricks and 2 Super hattricks since 2006 (exempting 1998 until records are properly sorted).

There have been only 2 women to have scored 4 times in a Wafcon game as far as "accessible records so far" go.

In Europe, Germany has the most titles with 8. The 2022 Women's Euros will hold from 6-31 July. Germany winning it will only make it 9.

In Asia, China's steel roses bagged their 9th continental title at the AFC Women's Nations Cup held earlier this year between 20 Jan and 6 Feb.

In South America, Brazil has 7 titles. The next Copa America Femenina holds between 8-30 July.

In North America, World Champs and World Number 1, USA has 8 titles. They are gunning for only their 9th between 4-18 July, next month this summer.

In Oceania, the OFC Women's Nations Cup will take place from 13 - 30 July. The most successful team there is New Zealand with 6 titles. They are gunning for a possible 7th.


So this leaves Nigeria's Super Falcons as the only team with a chance to Officially hit La Decima this year and become Women's football First ever 10-times Continental Champs.

In Oceania, the OFC Women's Nations Cup will take place from 13 - 30 July. The most successful team there is New Zealand with 6 titles. They are gunning for a possible 7th.


So this leaves Nigeria's Super Falcons as the only team with a chance to Officially hit La Decima this year and become Women's football First ever 10-times Continental Champs.

Thinking out loud here...
The key to besting the SA team is neutralizing their midfield. That seems to be their strongest suite and where their plays originate from.
If Randy is able to do this, by flooding the midfield with 5 players, it would help make the game a lot easier for us. Specifically, playing a 3-5-2 formation will help us accomplish this. He can start off with this formation and then switch up, as the game progresses and as Ellis adjusts her strategy also.
My suggested starting lineup will be the following:

Oluehi - Ohale, Onome, Plumptre - Otu, Ucheibe - Payne, Rash, Ordega - Oshoala, Onumonu

**looks like Nnadozie might be on suspension due to yellow card accumulation (vs. Ghana and Ivory Coast, per Coach Randy).
We do have the luxury of an extremely deep enough bench to alter the game as we please.

This may work, but we need speed in that middle as well. Wingback system will be very effective against Bayana girls.
