Hi Mates,

A quick question pls.,

Which rate does Canada use to calculate the POF for applicants from Nigeria? Is it an official or black market rate?

Secondly, a friend has his POF in foreign currency, do you advise him to retain it in that currency or he shld exchange it to naira?

Thanks for your inputs.

Good morning,

I need advice please. I am in the pool as a primary applicant with CRS of 445. This is because my husband hasn’t done IELTS and his ECA is not out yet. When I removed him, my score was 475. Should I leave it as 475? If I do, will I be able to add my husband again after I get an ITA?

By removing him it means she is claiming to be single instead of married. If she removes him how do she add him later? Won't that be misrepresentation? Except of course she plans to sponsor him later when PPR is approved

You can remove your husband now and add him after you receive an ITA. However, you will need to provide an explanation letter.

After adding your husband, the processing officer will recalculate your scores with the draw cut-off point when you received the ITA. If your score remains above, no issue; otherwise, if the recalculated score comes below the draw cut-off, then the application will be refused.

My advise will be just stay in the pool and help your spouse prepare for the IELTS and ECA

Canada uses official rate.

As long as the amount you have in foreign currency meets the minimum CAD required then you are good to go.

Exchanging foreign currency such as USD to Naira could actually increase your available POF. For example, if you have USD1,000, that would give you about CAD1,300 assuming an exchange rate of CAD1.3/USD1. However, if you exchanged USD1,000 to Naira using black market rate, you would get about N600,000. Since Canada uses official exchange rate, this gives you CAD1,818 i.e. N600,000 divided by 330 (assumimg N330/CAD1 is the official rate). CAD1,818 is clearly more than CAD1,300.

The downside is that you would likely lose when converting Naira back to a stronger foreign currency. But for the purpose of POF, it will give you more available funds.

I will advise you only use this option if you don't have enough proof of funds from your available foreign currency.

Anyone asking you to remove him first and put him later is advicing you wrong. You cannot claim single while married. E no go work.

Check your points for claiming married and spouse unaccompanying. Might boost the scores, i’m not sure again. Whatever you do, DO NOT apply as single of you are already married to this man.

Send the information sheet or imm form you got from the clinic via webform with an LoE that you’ve done medicals before on request so they should clarify if this is a mistake. If you have your VO’s address, send an email directly to them as well with same.

Definitely representation because at the point of sponsoring him later, marriage certificate will come out and the question they will ask is why didn't you declare him earlier.

Best bet is to declare husband but put him as unaccompanying and if scores no still reach, find ways to increase it.

If they are not currently married, she can enter as single with her points. Get AOR then add spouse after they have gotten married post AOR. Points will not be recalculated.

If or when the new system for draws gets implemented, would it mean that high scores won't matter again?

So go ahead with unaccompanying. When you land after PR, you can sponsor oga. I believe while the sponsorship thing is ongoing, he can apply for visit/open work permit (have to confirm this tbh) to come be with you guys…
