Hello house, please for someone that just landed, how do we go about filing our tax? I’ll appreciate any response. Thank you |
Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant Part 2 by olasubomy: 8:46pm On Jul 05, 2022 |
Flakeyy: Taxes are filed on preceding year basis. (PYB) You would need to wait till next year filing season since you were not resident in Canada last year. 2 Likes |

Flakeyy: No. You will need to declare how much you earned in the last year in your country of residence. Apply as soon as you land. It takes three months to process. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Flakeyy: File your taxes as soon as you land. Your income in Canada for previous year will be 0. Alternatively, apply for child care benefits, the form should double as filing for taxes too. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

I borrowed one muntula naira money back then only for him to pay back one year later when exchange was 360 or so. I told him my exchange loss nko the guy wan even swear for me lol[/quote] |

portablesuzy:canadian dols is not a major world currency, you can only open dom account in usd, pounds or euros in Nigeria. Yes it can be used for pof. However you will need more naira as your dom account will be funded with black market rates 4 Likes |

legionISproteus: Exactly, I am not sure Canada has taxing rights over the income a Nigerian Citizen earns in Nigeria while resident in Nigeria. Also, when the person had no physical presence in Canada for the fiscal year, I am not sure of the basis for a newbie to file taxes in Canada at the same time of arrival. I may be wrong and open to correction, but I think that’s the position of the law |

olasubomy:well you are wrong. The child allowance, gst/ hst benefits one will get is based on income from Nigeria. I got 500 cad for gst/ hst. For those with kids they will have to fill their last income from Nigeria while canada income is zero. Mazuide is right 6 Likes 2 Shares |

Flakeyy: If you're a new PR, you do not need to have filed your taxes before you can apply for CCB. However, you may face a bit of a challenge. There are 3 methods of application; i. birth registration - only if your child was born in Canada. I registered using this method when my family had newly landed and had not filed taxes yet. Note that we stated our income from Nigeria, but this in itself is not 'tax filing'. ii. CRA My Account - only if you've filed taxes before iii. Mail - I believe this is the option that can work for you. You can read more on it here https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/child-family-benefits/canada-child-benefit-overview/canada-child-benefit-apply.html Do note that I am not a tax professional, and I am a newcomer myself. 7 Likes 4 Shares |

Tcrown2020: For other stuff – I use an Android phone and it works perfectly here. I don't know about phones that don't work here but from experience, majority of smart phones work here. I would suggest she get an additional piece of screen protector for her phone. This is because screen protectors are pretty pricey here, so she can maintain and use the phone extensively before buying another one. Phones are expensive in Canada, so most phone networks enroll their customers on a phone plan where you have to pay a monthly fee for two years before the phone becomes yours. She may want to save lots of money and get more established before going into such arrangements, so getting more screen protectors for her phone so she can enjoy it for a longer time till she is ready to dispose of it. She can plan to buy her laptop in Canada. She should buy it here as it would come with a warranty, and secondly, her school may have a department that loans laptops to students for the term (She can find out from her department ). She will not be pressured to get a new laptop if that arrangement is in place at her school. Also, don’t forget the Universal adaptor/ converter. You can await more feedback regarding your other questions for those in Ottawa 7 Likes |

portablesuzy:use your calculator or excel to do the maths. Naira pof vs usd pof. One is using official rate, the other is using black market rate to get to usd. 1m naira when converted on paper for pof is 3200 cad. But 1m converted to usd at black market is 1640 usd. Then converted to cad At 1.3 is 2145 cad. Simple maths 3 Likes |
