During our River ferry travelers’ initial viewings of Onitsha, we glimpsed the RCM Cathedral that dominates the northwest coastline. At right, the Church Missionary Society (CMS)’s new All-Saints Cathedral, built in 1952 ((photo by Peter Brigham 1963.)) and located northeast of the Onitsha Roundabout intersecting Oguta and Awka Roads..

The roundabout is a central crossroads. This area was the place where much of the early history (mid-to-late 1800s) of CMS missionaries’ dealings with Ndi-Onicha occurred. In 1857 when the missionaries first came, the Ndi-Onicha indigenous village of Umu-Dei (marked here roughly at far right), formed a northwestern boundary of “The Inland Town”, beyond which the the lands to both north and west were regarded as wild bush, (Ofia), a zone ritually controlled by the tiny Ndi-Onicha descent group of Okposi-Eke, “guided” by their legendary woman Atagbusi who fostered their ability to transform themselves into wild buffaloes whenever dangerous outside forces impinged. (The approximate locations of several shrines held by this group are marked with green “A”‘s on the map; enlarge it to see them clearly.) The missionaries were given places to live in the “bush” (afia) that spread outward from this town boundary-marking location, on the assumption that if they intended no good for Ndi-Onicha they would soon wither and die on the spot. (Some of these peripheral areas were distinctly marked as “Ajo-Ofia“, “Bad Bush”, where corpses resulting from “Bad Death” were traditionally dumped. These were especially potent health-destroyers, and it is not unlikely that such land was deemed appropriate for these very strange newcomers. ((See Henderson 1972:115-125,175-7.))

As it happened, in 1857, the first missionaries of the Church Missionary Society arranged with the most Senior Chief of Umu-Dei to get some land they could occupy for housing. and were directed to a place that eventually became known as “The Old Compound”, located approximately at site of the small Cathedral marked on the map just above, just west of the Atagbusi-related shrines. The missionaries mostly survived (as we discuss elswhere), and over time various CMS establishments grew up in this vicinity, most prominently D.M.G.S. (Dennis Memorial Grammar School), established in 1925. See a view of it above. ((This and the two subsequent photographs were taken by Peter Brigham in 1963. He was an American Peace Corps Volunteer who taught at the school at that time.)) Below, a view of the football field at D.M.G.S., located north of the roundabout.

..... ...... .....

The roundabout refers to the present DMGS roundabout. 2nd and third pics are of DMGS in 1960.

The educational counterpart of DMGS for the Catholics, built just a few years after, was Christ the King College (CKC). Over the years the RCM directed construction of three major schools in the southeastern corner of Onitsha, which you see here at right marked with red crosses. While CKC is by far the most prestigious of these institutions, all three are very substantial and important religious and educational complexes for all of southeastern Nigeria (and beyond).

Note the blue crosses marked on the map, which point to two CMS schools in the same general area. These are considerably smaller-scale than their RCM neighbors, but the venerable Reverend Anyaegbunam Memorial School (CMS) is of considerable importance in the history of Nigerian education and is still active.

We visited CKC briefly in 1961, and found it very a very impressive operation.

..... ...... ......

2nd pic is CKC admin/classroom blocks and chapel, and 3rd pic is staff residential quarter. 1961.

Old boys of CKC might struggle to locate exactly where that staff quarters building is presently located, as i don't think this is the back of the school where the present staff quarters are.

Returning now to our Water Tower and looking out toward the horizon, we see the hills that lie above the rest of the town: Enu. This green dome at image far center marks the second major “heart” of Onitsha Town: Enu-Onicha (“High-Onitsha”), also called the Inland Town, the ancient home of Ndi-Onicha, the self-designated “Onitsha People”, led by their King (Obi) and Chiefs (Ndi-Ichie) and who in precolonial times controlled the entire area where Onitsha Town now lies. Ndi-Onicha also hold a position of historical renown in Nigeria, due to the early prominence of Onitsha as a center for Western-style education and the Onitsha indigenes’ early advantages of access to it.

Understandable. Shameful thing is that segregation is almost everywhere even within local governments and the OSU caste system hasn't fully been abolished in many parts of the east

I guess segregation is human nature
Northerners don't do it as much as Igbos.

In Enugu, Nsukka is segregated, in Ebonyi, Afikpo is seen as "not one of us". In Abia, Ngwa man is hated, in larger SE, Abakaliki and Nsukka are segregated against.

It's not like this in North and the tussle between Ijebu and Egba Yoruba are not as worse as Igbos own.

I'm convinced there will be another fight for independence in an only Igbo nation, by a segregated minority within the Biafra. It is Nigeria that binds us together.

SOLUDO INAUGURATES BOARD FOR ANAMBRA STATE WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR has tasked members of Anambra Communities on Ownership of the state waste management process.

Governor Soludo gave the charge when he inaugurated a nine-member board for Anambra State Waste Management Authority.

Members of the Board include; Dr. Emma Ezenwaji, Chairman, Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr. Collins Nwabunwanne, Commissioner for Environment, Engr Felix Odimegwu, Prince Chris Azor as a representative of Community based Organization.

Others are Mrs Ifeoma Ezeaku, Chief Emeka Aghasili as representative of the private sector, Managing Director ASWAMA, Mr. Mike Ozoemena and Prof. Ikemefuna Uzochukwu representing the healthcare industry, as well as representatives of Aguata, Njikoka and Onitsha North local government areas.

Governor Soludo hinted that for the board to fulfill its role, participation of all players is very imperative, stating that their role is a call to service of the people of Anambra

The Governor who described waste Management as a very critical sector of the society, stressed that their primary responsibility is to keep the state clean in terms of regulation, generation, collection, disposal and processing of waste which can be recycled back to wealth, licencing of operators, among others

He asked them to interface with ministries and various organisations that generate waste, to develop a sustainable system that works. He furher charged them on the review of the work of the waste service providers who have already been engaged by the state government.

The Governor expressed optimism that with their inauguration, open dumping of refuse should stop, adding that it is his administration's desire to fashion out enforcement mechanisms for the good of the state.

Chairman of the Board, Dr. Ezenwaji gave assurances that his team will work with four basic documents to deliver on their mandate including Soludo Solution manifesto, Vision 2070 report, Transition Committee report and the ASWAMA law which he described as very comprehensive.

While harping on behavioural change among the people, he promised to put up a structure that will ensure proper enforcement and synergy with relevant MDAs, to deliver on their mandate.

Murphy, I have warned you to stop making it look like igbos are courting ebonyi state. If there's any group igbos are earnestly interested in discarding, it is ebonyi state. There's absolutely nothing that ebonyi brings to the table. I may not even want Biafra myself but truth is that even if Biafra comes today, ebonyi won't survive in it, because igbos are result oriented and promotes merit, not quota. How will ebonyi survive in Biafra if everything comes by merit. Think about it.

The plan of the state gov't is ultimately to have a house-to-house and business-to-business waste collection. This isn't easy and neither is it gonna be cheap, so i hope businesses and households pay some token amount for this to be done properly and sustained. Bins would have to be provided for each collection point which would be placed in front of the property once a week on collection day. In the UK, this is funded with the council tax.

A NEW ANAMBRA IS HERE

Anambra State Governor; Charles Chukwuma Soludo with his entire SOLUTION TEAM, today, welcome International Community and Development Partners at Govt House Agu Awka.

Governor Soludo in his welcome address to the visitors, gave in details; the opportunities, possibilities, economic values, abilities of Ndi Anambra, tourist attractions etc and many key areas of the state that need improvement.

He added that the state has done much in making development accessible to rural communities, and ease of doing business in Anambra is exceptional even though more efforts is continually needed.

According to the governor, his administration is fully bent on reducing the cost of governance effectively and money saved has been channelled to road rehabilitation and maintenance in some key areas of the state.

Since assuming office, the governor has continued to harp on the need for environmental protection as well as understanding that the era of oil revenue has sharply reduced hence the need to look towards other areas to generate money to develop the state further.

He stated that even though insecurity has become a national problem, his administration is determined to arrest the situation in Anambra and has continued to make progress.

Conclusively, he expounded on the need to address flooding that has affected Anambra West, Anambra East and Ogbaru Communities. He mentioned some tourist sites like; Ogbunike Cave, Owerri Ezukala etc… He equally spoke on the devastating effect of erosion in Anambra presently, dilapidated roads and many damaged educational facilities like; classrooms blocks, chairs, etc

CONTRACTORS MUST WORK DAY AND NIGHT TO CLEAN ANAMBRA.

Kennedy Aniedozie

Awka, 7th July 2022(MOI) The Anambra state commissioner of Environment, Engr Felix Odimegwu urges contractors engaged to evacuate wastes in all the 21 Local Government Areas in the state to work round the clock.

Speaking with journalists immediately after the inauguration of the newly constituted, Anambra State Waste Management(ASWAMA) board in the Exco chamber of the Governor's office.

The commissioner, made it known that Mr.Governor, Prof.Chukwuma Soludo is result orientated and doesn't want excuses.so contractors must work in line with his mission statement in creating a liveable, clean, and green Urban dwelling in Anambra state.

In his words, Engr Felix reiterates that all the contractors engaged must work day and night to clean up the state because Anambra is having a population explosion due to its commercial activities. Therefore, waste evacuation must be properly managed because we generate waste in all our activities.

The commissioner made it known that the ministry has created a weekly chart report where all the activities of each contractor will be recorded and any contractors failing to meet up with the percentage of work given will have their contract terminated."

"It is no longer business as usual when contractors would be given award letters and you think there won't be supervision.
" Personally, my eagle eyes are everywhere monitoring your routine of work because we have created the places of refuse evacuation based on constituencies for easy assessments."

"For investors to invest in Anambra state
the state must look clean, healthy, and green so that development partners will give Mr.Governor , Prof.soludo pass mark at the global level.

It's not difficult either. But Soludo needs to do less PR grandstanding and more actual work. Development agencies allocate money to projects that meet their goals which in most cases revolve around health, education, environment and gender. The question for Soludo is does he have capable hands in those ministries? And its not just PhD title but experience in program design and management. Already he appointed an uncouth woman as education minister. The rest remains to be seen.

They are going about it the wrong way to show how once again he got his appoimtment at ASWAMA wrong. Appointing big contractors is the wrong way to go about it other than evacuating waste from markets. The state government needs to establish depots, incinerators and landfills around cities and then buy waste by volume. Entrepreneurs will bring the waste to them. At the same time they need to charge every single commercial entity waste fees - market stalls, shops, restaurants, hotels, multi tenant buildings.
