Focusmind: In as much as this pay increase is good, most Professors in Nigerian universities are too laid back- They are hardly academic and research-minded. Some got their professorship position through ass-licking, which I dont blame them fo,r as some VCs see themselves as mini gods and dish out professorship positions to their cronies. Some of them will collect both local and international research grants and use it to by SUVs, build houses and shopping malls and commission a Phd student to produce a sub-standard journal or research. Lobatan! Everybody na thief ... Na to dey pay to become prof remain... What a mess... Nigeria is gone ... Non of those APC PDP or former of them would help... Even if we find one to help Nigeria stand ... The masses are not ready for the change |

The Federal Government is playing mind game, blackmailing ASUU before the Nigeria public. Is salary the major contending issue? NO, improved educational funding, Research grants, infrastructural development etc are there. Today our best brains are either at home no job or running after scarce white collar jobs, the government has to wake up to her responsibilities. Its Worthy of note that their children are in the UK, America, Cyprus, Ghana schooling while over 20m Nigerian students are at home for over 5 months. 1 Like |

You may correct your calculations. Crude oil is not sold at 1$ per barrel as used in your calculations. This year oil has gone up as high as120$ and over per barrel. Currently it is ranging at around 100$. However, I am not saying an unsustainable salary structure be recommended, rather something appreciate and sustainable thanks for the correction |

tony0806: 2,000,000 monthly
As at 2019, Nigeria had about 11,877 professors (though this include both those on private and public higher institutions).
That means; monthly, the government will pay 2,000,000 x 11,877 = 23,754,000,000. That's over twenty three billion naira monthly.
As at today, Nigeria produces about 1.2m BPD of crude oil (Our main source of income, excluding mineral resources from the north which I don't know why they don't mention it. Only God knows where that money is going to). Using the official exchange rate of about 414 naira, that's a total income of 1,200,000 x 414 = 496,800,000.
THEN; 496,800,000 x 30 days = 14,904,000,000. This is approximately Fifteen billion naira FROM CRUDE OIL MONTHLY (Nigeria's income from crude oil).
Summarily, the nations income (from crude oil) AS AT TODAY CAN'T settle ASUU's demand. This draft proposal is just for academic staff salaries oooo. We've not mentioned other items.
SSANU, Non academic staff, etc have not been mentioned oooo. Other government establishment have not been mentioned oooo.
Anyway, the government has enough money. Else, where are they getting money to pay NPOWER between 12 to 15 billion monthly? What of the one they said they share to the poorest people in Nigeria monthly, etc.
I'll come back to modify my comment later
Your calculation is wrong. However 1.2mbpd is not going at 414 per barrel, pls confirm that a barrel of fuel isn't 1 dollar |

1 million is a fair price for a professor.
You people need to start paying the masses fair wages so that you know there is no much remaining to loot.
Maybe you will curb corruption and reduce cost of governance then. The whole labour force should ideally go on strike and damage a fair living wage. forget all this degree hunters.what do this professors contribute to this poor country that even warrant them to earn 2m.education is the future but Nigerian education is a scam. All this lazy degree hunter who only wants already made life after getting degree.lazy professors what do they even teach us self.just imagine the rubbish stress we have to go through in school then. |

The average cost of a 2 bedroom apartment in America is about N7 million annually, while the average cost in Nigeria (Lagos mainland) is about N700,000 annually
So based on this very simple comparison, why does a college professor in Nigeria want to earn half the salary of an American college professor when his expenses and standard of living are over 10x less? but, but a Nigerian senator with ssce can earn 30m per month since they don't live in Nigeria 1 Like |

You actually "down-played" it. The average annual rent of 2 bedroom in the US can't be N7M (less than $16,500) if your calculation considers places like New York where monthly rent for 2 bed is between 5k to 6k. Even in the cheaper areas, $16,500 annual rent would imply a monthly rent of about $1,375. That's not realistic for a 2 bed. I know you gave an estimate but I think it's much higher than that. |

Lol. Valuation Mathematics yin o pe sir. First off I am not sure why you are doing the whole oil revenue calc. But let us go with that. You fail to multiply the volume with the price of oil tho. Or is oil now $1 per barrel? 1.2mbpd @ $100pb = $120m That is the figure you should be converting to naira. Not 1.2m itself tony0806: 2,000,000 monthly

lawrenzooo: Thank God it was the federal government committee that made the recommendation and not ASUU demanding for 2 million. Am not sure our government value our education that much to want to Pay a prof. Over $3000 per month.
Am sure salary and payment issue were not the only thing in the report. They should stop making it look as though salary and allowances are the only thing ASUU is fighting for there are other issues as well.
If some of the terms on that report is not workable what happens to renegotiating and working out the workable ones?
Summarily : Our leaders are not yet ready to upgrade our education system. Hopefully Nigerians make the right choice next election. If the content of the proposal is actually true, then ASUU is indeed a very selfish organisation. It's not done anywhere. In developed countries, lecturers are not paid the same salaries, each university pays it's Lecturers based on their income generating power, ability of the lecturers to generate funds for the university. So, proposing such huge amount as monthly salary only expose them as thieves as their counterparts in politics. You think amount is sustainable given the economic realities in Nigeria. How many state governments can pay half of the proposal conveniently. None, not even Lagos. You cannot be comparing US with Nigeria, what's the living expenses in Osun state and living expenses in Ohio, what's the state of infrastructure in Osun state and Ohio. If there's anything the government need to massively invest into, it's infrastructure in all sectors of the economy because the country is still much backward infrastructure wise, not recurrent expenditure. Remove sentiment, if you become governor or president today, you cannot pay that amount to anyone except you want to throw your state into chaos

papalumi29: I read thru the comments and I will say non address the crucial point. No amount of money is too much or too small for our professors.
But the critical aspect of this issue is the value. With the high rate of inflation, cost of living standard, I think if they earn 100 million it will amount to nothing.
An increament in wages and income will automatically increase inflation rate. Gone were the days when a brand new car was sold less than ₦5,000.
My submission, let government engage in economy plans and activities that will strengthen our purchasing power, even if they are paid ₦50,000, it should be valuable, not like Zimbabwe where their currency is totally worthless. Currently 100m no be beans at all |
