A good movie...but a missed opportunity, a lot more could have been done with the character of The Grabber

Impressive visuals with the right humor beats and creative third act.

Still don't get using Wanda as a villain though.

I understand the appeal of keeping his character mysterious but then they hinted at several things but did nothing with them even tho there was time for those:

1. The Grabber spoke about coming down to the basement as a child...but nothing was shown or said about how it led to his current acts of kidnapping kids
2. The Grabber spoke about the phone and it was later established in the movie that he hears it ring but refuses to accept it... nothing was also done with this...is he also a psychic or what?
In fact, if he refused to accept it, why leave it in the room?
3. With these hints we should have had more insight on how he came to be that way, also his relationship with his brother...his whole brother subplot led nowhere...in fact it didn't feel necessary except for shock value


Also some minor issues:
1. A popular child kidnapper has been in town for a while yet no precautions were taken...either by the school or the police...
Just newspaper reports and nothing else
2. He kidnaps in such an open neighborhood in broad daylight with no witnesses
3. After they discovered about the black Van and black balloons...there seemed to be no search for it
4. The Grabber kept driving the black Van around town...he even parked it in an open garage yet the police didn't see it at all
5. Even when the police arrived at the house where the kids are buried, the van was directly opposite and clearly visible in the open garage, but they didn't bother to check that house... instead they only checked the house the sister pointed...the boy could have died in that time wasted
6. In such a small town the police had no reason to keep the information about the black Van hidden...
Sure it could make the Grabber aware but it could also provide info from others who had seen such a van...
In fact the Grabber would have been caught since if the info was released and lives would have been saved...

The police in the movie are so grossly incompetent you'd wonder how they got their badge in the first place


Still a good movie but these are some of the reasons I gave THE BLACK PHONE a 7/10 and not 9/10
