Well it depends on the slip of tongue. Peter Obi saying there are 100 Nigerians out of 150 NBA stars does not worry me so much, but a candidate saying he plans to build a 50 million-strong army puts me on very high alert. But yea, we can say they're both a slip of tongue.

Theflint1:
Peter Obi has had several interviews before this, and we've even discussed the merits and demerits of his strategy for security on this thread. Peter Obi supports state policing, economic restoration of these troubled areas, and non-combative strategies to resolve these conflicts. He's also said if all of these strategies fail, he's ready to revert back to more conventional means of handling terrorists.

If you watched the recent BBC Eye documentary on banditry and ethnic conflicts up North, you'd see we can't say it's simply terrorists wanting to terrorise, there's nuance to these issues.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-fPEHUqhyA

I do agree though, this last interview was far from stellar, he's had better ones and we shouldn't be too quick to write off certain candidates when we have other candidates who're actively dodging scrutiny and we still cannot point to what they have to offer.

In my opinion. It's completely pointless to point out the economic factors behind current insecurity, because the economic issues cannot

1. Be addressed without establishing new baseline for security

2. Addressed in enough time to have an immediate impact on the security challenges anyway. In fact, I don't expect those kind of results within a hypothetical 8 year tenure.

All the talk about creating jobs blah blah is pointless and obfuscates the simple fact that it's not government that creates jobs - it's the private sector.

Private sector needs 4 things to thrive

1. Security
2. Power
3. Environment that facilitates innovation
4. Protection to profit from said innovation.

All 4 are missing in Nigeria. Of these 4, number 1 is probably the easiest to address in a somewhat timely manner - recruit and equip.

The real problem with security isn't even the poverty in the land imo, its the fact the successive governments have deliberately weakened all aspects of the military partly to steal money, but mostly to ensure that the military are never in a position to launch future coups.

That's , in my opinion, the unaddressed elephant in the room. Somebody has to be willing to materially strengthen our armed forces at the risk of potentially empowering aspiring coupists.

Obi has consistently showing through his constant focus on his capitalist rhetoric that he's not that guy. The man said in this interview that he would make federal police subject to state governors- what an inane thing to say.

I'm not sorry to say that your man is a joke.

So why don't they clamp down on it effectively?

The biggest problem the discos have is the old nepa culture. Legacy staff are propagating the government company attitude. And this is still trickling down.

There was a thread on it the other day. Field staff are aware of meter bypass issues but prefer to collect settlement from the culprits. Basically Bleep over your employer and your company income for your own pocket.

Which is why I say government company culture. The same one where you work three days out of five.

Lastly let me tell you the icing on the cake, I haven't paid nepa bill in 3 years. Around us we have people that rig the meter, so it doesn't read. When the nepa people come much later, we settle the staff and he goes. This cannot happen in abroad.

Is now asking why discos don't clampdown on meter bypassers more effectively...

Govt gives meter to capture readings, we rig it
Govt send officials to monitor, we bribe them
Govt gives you a job, you ghost it
Then complain how govt isn't doing enough

What else should govt do in this instance short of Buhari himself coming down to everyone's house and job to ensure we are complying

If Obi becomes president will that suddenly make us have a change of heart to stop ghosting work, to stop rigging meters or to stop bribing officials. Or Obi will give us light we don't have to pay for, jobs we don't have to report to, food for free, money for all since Nigeria is rich enough

Truly you like finding who to fight with. I will not go down that lane with you.
If you were smart, you would see that the fact that nepa officials are complicit in shortchanging their own company is part of the dysfunctional system I'm talking about.

If their own staff are complicit in shortchanging their own company, how will meter rigging not thrive? Am I the NEPA staff accepting bribes or outrightly encouraging it? It's all part of the dysfunctional system I'm talking about.

Now imagine someone in ministry of defence, police or NSA thinking the same thing. Why do soldiers need more than 10 bullets when they can share 5 between 3 soldiers to fight BokoHaram, Bandits herdsmen and UGM

Why do ministry of defence workers need to go to work when they can ghost it.

Why do we need to spend 1billion when we can chop 80% of it and only buy weapons with small amount

There have been reports of top military brass Doing this thinking that's their way of exploiting the country, not doing what they get paid for and rigging laid down monitors not knowing that indirectly they are fuelling insecurity, causing the death of the soldiers and citizens.

Reducing the security situation to simply arming and recruiting men is a rather simplistic take on the issue. There are underlying issues that bother on:

- The age-long history between the warring tribes
- Drought and desertification
- Ancient cultural practices like nomadic cattle herding
- Establishing trust between the people there and the Nigerian state
- And of course, public procurement

The war on terror has been on for at least 12 years and in the 2022 budget, Buhari allocated about a trillion to defence. There's money being pumped into security but much of it has been embezzled. Yusuf-Datti, Peter Obi's running mate has once tried passing a bill to address current public procurement issues and they've made it one of their campaign promises to fix public procurement. Every now and again we see top military guys accused of embezzlement that are running billions a better public procurement policy will fix this. Improved procurement will give us better armed and better compensated military officials.

Def 8 years is not going to fix all of these issues and yes, terrorists will be treated as terrorists but we need to think long-term in dealing with these issues.

How will we not have buildings collapsing when the regulators want money over everything else?

No I'm not missing the point.

If the NEPA officials did not facilitate an environment of bribery, it would not occur.
And that bribery occurs because people at the top of the company are also failing in their responsibility. Those at the top of the company and the regulators themselves should do a better job of regulation and fieldchecks. Weed out the bad eggs amongst the staff and impose tough penalties and possible law enforcement on those that defraud their own employers.

As I said earlier, all these are a product of a dysfunctional system and that blame falls on those at the very top.

As for my own federal work. I have said it countlessly that I do not abdicate personal responsibility. I work 3 times a day because we are not allocated any work. We sit in office all day doing practically nothing, whose fault is that?
I work in the federal inspectorate services as a high level officer and for us to go into the field to supervise various government workers, we are supposed to be assigned and also designated special allowances to cover the duration and logistics of the work. The federal government rarely sanctions these things, hence rendering us impotent. Who do we blame?

When you point out that I go to work just 3 days, it would appear as if I'm not doing something that I'm supposed to get done when in essence, THERE IS NOTHING FOR ME TO DO. In my lower levels, I worked my back off. We did much more than we were supposed to, all these still point to the dysfunctional system I talk about.
Things are not working as they are supposed to and I for one wish to see our country functioning normally. I project that hope on Peter Obi because he's clearly the most competent compared to the top 3 contenders.
