afrodoc2: 78k // 5 years contract for a player that was supposed to be our first-choice LB is/was not a bad deal. 1 Like |

afrodoc2:you should also remember we signed him for £15m and another ~£20m spread to cover his salary over 4 years. again what you said makes sense but I prefer the bird view. if there is to be a squad wage review it needs to start from the top. we shouldn't have a player earning above £300k and one earning £30k in the same first team. I don't know how others may view it but there needs to be reasonable differences which are subject to review based on performances. if a player is so poor as cannot be reflected on his wages then he should be sold, no options. look at Phil Jones for example. how can United sign any player for the first team and offer him wages lower than Phil Jones? it isn't rational in any way. |
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 11:02am On Aug 01, 2022 |
Expert17: He was on 25k in his former club and it was not like there was a bidding war for him. Double his salary and give him 50k. not 78k. Supposed to be is still a risk. Give him 50k and after 2 years of balling you can upgrade him to 100k sef if he is worth it. He is not the only one. Our squad is littered with mediocre players on huge salaries. That is why we always struggle to offload players, it is not because other clubs have a conspiracy against United. |
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 11:08am On Aug 01, 2022 |
ChristineC: It should start from everywhere not only the top. It is the main reason we struggle to offload players, and your Phil Jones example is even faulty. You can't compound one mistake by making another mistake. So in order to correct the mistake we made by offering Phil Jones 75k weekly we should then make another mistake by offering any new player we buy a higher salary than Jones's 75k salary even if that player is really worth only 40k? Have you ever heard 2 wrongs do not make a right? 3 Likes |

afrodoc2: I understand your point perfectly, the bolded part is similar to how Bruno's contract was reviewed and upgraded some months ago. The agent and player are aware of the figures earned by average players at United- Shaw, Jones, Lingard, Martial, Rashford, etc... so I don't see them accepting 50k for a player who was balling so well in Portugal. |
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by ChristineC: 11:15am On Aug 01, 2022 |
afrodoc2:we are saying the same thing, only in revised grammar. if you are a United executive and you approach me with a contract that will give me an opportunity to compete for a starting position in your team, I can look at the average wage in your establishment and make a salary demand. moreso, if I see a salary of Phil Jones, a man everybody knows hasn't kicked a ball for more than 100mins in the last 4 years... then how can I be expected to agree to a lesser wage? 3 Likes |

ChristineC: Tuazebe is on 50k. Shaw 150k. Dalot 65k AWB 90k Van De Beek moved from 40k to 120k. You don't expect the hottest LB in Portuguese Liga that was meant to be our 1st choice to accept a 50k contract. 1 Like |

Expert17: So he is yet another bad deal in a catalogue of bad deals. But saying he was a good deal? Fa fa fa foul. If we continue signing players with that mindset of because Player X is on this amount then incoming Player Y must get this amount we will never clear the bad contracts. Imagine Malacia asking for 90k because useless Telles is on 78k. Meanwhile Malacia’s contract back home was 7.5 k. |

ChristineC: This theory works when the United executive is a dunderhead with no negotiation skills because……. Erm, wait! That explains it. |
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 11:36am On Aug 01, 2022 |
Expert17: VDB moved from 40k to 120k. AWB got 90k after 1 season of slide tackles at Crystal Palace. Udoji Awards. |

afrodoc2:let us first expunge the deadwood. what is Jones still doing here? for the life of a dinosaur I still can't explain it. this is the quota system that has killed Nigeria in play here. as for the very high earners that are not performing like Martial and Rashford, offer them a paycut or frustrate them out of the club. other teams do it, why can't we? |

Expert17:that is the fact. Telles was bought as a competition to Shaw, not just a squad cover. whether he succeeded or not is another thing but at the time of the contract offer, his representative will look at the wage structure and negotiate on that. |
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 11:51am On Aug 01, 2022 |
Expert17: That is where negotiation skill and not being desperate (or not appearing desperate) comes in. Where else will he get 50-60k weekly and the social media/endorsement exposure that comes with playing for Man Utd? And if he still refuses you forget him and get someone else. After a while players and agents will know not to ask for ridiculous wages. |

afrodoc2:Good points Doc. But what do you suggest is the way forward? How can United balance their wage bill knowing full well that other clubs are reluctant to sign their players due to their high wages |
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by kizolo(m): 12:07pm On Aug 01, 2022 |
United should probably just allow those contracts to run down then offer them a reduced contract. If they reject then let them go for free. Players no dey finish |

Expert17: People need to understand that working in a certain country automatically improves your wage even if you are very poor at what you do. You can't be on a $250/month on Nigeria and earn $500/month in US. Getting x3 of his salary is a very good deal from united end. Cost of living in countries defer abeg. 1 Like |

I just watched the Rayo match this morning. I thought Donny did ok. His style is clearly 1 touch play so it seems like he doesnt impose himself in games much. I dont think he'll ever be a first teamer but he's a decent option off the bench and a rotation option as he finds space very well. |

Karleb: It’s the wage structure and it went to shit after Moyes offered Rooney £300k/week after Sir Alex left Man Utd. Shaw was on £150k/week, there was no way his deputy or back up player would get anything less than half of that amount. Brandon Williams was on £65k/week and even Axel Tuanzebe was on £50k/week. All these players would be lucky to earn up to £30k/week at Liverpool but Man Utd are cheerful givers. Andy Robertson is on £50k/week in spite of his PL/UCL/FA cup/etc trophies and you have the calamitous Luke Shaw drawing triple that amount every week with zero output. 6 Likes |
