ultim: 1.REVENUE from crude oil is not up to what the UK spends on policing alone. And the UK has a smaller populaiton than we do. 2.Plus, we need more revenue sources than crude oil and one of the sources is...taxes 3.Yes, as a nation (I don't mean you or i...I pay tax too)...we do not pay enough taxes. Our tax to gdp is basically 8.1%. It is even lower than Niger republic (15%) and Ghana (24%) 4.We need more sources of income. That is a fact. Oil is not a good source of income because prices fluctuate. We need oil to be consistently at 133 dollars a barrel before we can say we have enough money...barely enough. That is why Buhari's government is bad...nothing for diversificaiton. When you say UK universities generate funding from school fees I laugh again They do. School fees in most UK universites are around 6000 pounds per annum. Only the Scots allow free universites..for scottish citizens only...everyone else pays a fee. Plus taxes , etc. . Nigerian university had long sought for autonomy but same government has severally kicked against it. Autonomy means increased fees...which is why people kick against it. It does not mean government would give your uni more money...it means government frees you to raise money, and to have control over how ye spend it. eign p schemes in forschools are created by private individuals and coalition groups. This is the major ways education is being funded abroad.Scholarshi No 1.Taxes 2.High fees. Scholarships exist in Nigeria too....I got some from the state, some got from companies. Fees are subsidised for citizens and facilities are taken care of. Yes, Germany and FInalad and Denmark do that...and their tax to gdp raitos are at 45-50%. Nigeria? 8.1% Tax rates are also high in all these countries. If we implemeted their tax rate here in Nigeria...you will see street protests on a daily basis with the theme 'The Government is making our lives hard' Research grants here and there do not come from students fees. They are created from different projects enabled by government and different agencies. Not entirely true...they may come in part from fees, or from the organisaiton sponsoring the research. But you need a well equiped university to attract such research...which Nigeria does not have because our universites are poorly funded because..... T he problem here is that the police makers either so not understand how education runs successfully in this age or they deliberately ignore same. That is why you must do more than vote for someone. Participatiory democracy. You complain about looting, yet support subsides and the like which channel more money for looting. You want free edication without thinking where the money comes from. You are using government corruption to cover for your desire for free education without paying for it. Nothing like a free lunch. Leadership problems, graft and somehow ignorance are the bane of sustainable development in Nigeria. And poor funding as well. |

Useless fools are here supporting ASUU criminal demands to embezzle 100s of billions running into trillions for nothing, make una just join bandits carry guns begin Rob una fellow criminals in govt. ASUU are jealous of the looting politicians are doing and the greedy pigs simply want their share. Nothing is wrong with infrastructures of our varsities, they're all in good shape for learning. They are just thieves like the politicians they're trying to steal from, only dumb idiots are supporting those greedy pigs in ASUU. If ASUU guys want money to loot they should just join politics and loot with confidence instead of hoping to loot under academic cover. Useless students supporting them can continue to sit at home instead of protesting against ASUU greedy pigs. |

Damidave1124:The main issue is the salaries. How can the lecturers ask the Federal government to borrow such outrageous amount to pay them. As academicians, they should know that will worsen the already bad economic situation of the country. Gradual periodic increment of salaries should be considered. 1 Like |

If you give universities 1.1 trillion over 5 years, ASUU members will end up embezzling it. No difference between ASUU and the politicians. After all, during elections, ASUU members are used as returning officers and over the years, we can see how much rigging these ASUU people have facilitated. 1 Like |

Nyanabo: There is no country in the world that makes first degree a minimum. The hallmark of a good educational system is that a secondary education should be enough to provide needed literacy, numeracy and civic education. Tertiary education is then for more purposeful reasons. |

Damidave1124: Well spoken dear! It's unfortunate that our brothers from the East just hate truth and they believed that anyone not in Obi' s Camp of LP is Satanic! Nonsense! How did you twist the Umahi Statements upside down! ASUU is not even asking for a Trillion but that govt should be serious to honour agreement ,which runs into Billions, yet you turned the statement to POLITICS! Shame! So now that South East has moved away from PDP failure of 16- good years to a new Party- Labour, then we should not hear word and anybody who dare disagreed is termed an enemy! Is this how Democracy works in the East? In a true Democratic Politics,a father and his family can be in different Political Parties! People must have choices in politics! It's politics without bitterness and this Obi's followers are too toxic. Its now more of Region Politics. Na wao! |

Damidave1124: But as a governor, and a member of the ruling party he should be advocating solutions The education sector can bring us some cool forex if invested into properly, gone are the days you do everything for social purpose Let our government gets busy in developing the nation and stop giving excuses as if the citizens will be the one to provide solutions to our numerous problems. |

the problem begins when there is no position for an ssce holder, civil service employment requires an holder of ph.d or b.sc as the least. there wouldn't be much need for b.sc if there were civil employments for ssce holders. |

fitinwell:How sure are you that ASUU and University VCs will steal and loot the money if FG give 1.1 trillion naira ? No be ASUU Waka come! Other sectors of the country also need money like Power, security, health etc. Police and Army also have poor state of salary but you don't see them going on strike. ASUU is also fighting for their selfish interest. Most of their children school in foreign universities. |

einsteine:That what I keep telling people. There is no difference between ASUU and the politicians. Even if you FG withdraw all the billions of dollars in our foreign reserve and give ASUU, ASUU will still loot and embezzle the money and demand for more!! ASUU is fighting their selfish interest. They just use the students as pawns. Know this and know peace. I wish we have president that has ball so that he can deal with ASUU nonsense once and for all. |

Please tell us how profitable it is to chase rats when your house is on fire |

this one is foolishly playing to the gallery, did ASUU ask them to pay all in one year? how many years have they been renegotiating and government defaulting on her part of the timelines? they prefer to borrow money to build moribund railways that won't even boost the dead economy and they can't take a faction of that wasted investment to boost education? this is also claim to be educated?
