I would have switched to Lagos Consulate, just that it takes them about 3 weeks to respond. I don't have time again... Still wondering if Abuja Embassy will release dates this month. I am so confused! taiwogabriel: |

sammyboy: The can ask you anything you like, but most of the trasnscripts here give you a good idea. There will be questions related to your educational goals, what, where and why. Funding. The how. And what ties you to Nigeria - what is goign to bring you back. 2 Likes |

Know your Consular Officer. Before you interview for your Non-Immigrant Visa, you need to understand the person who is going to be adjudicating your visa. You do not want to aggravate them, you want to give them an easy reason to yes. They need no reason to say no. This is a general outline of the people you will be talking too. This is their first or second tour as a member of the US Foreign Service, they may or may not be a Consular coned officer. If this is their first tour, they likely bid Nigeria because they will receive preferences for bidding for their second post. If this is their second post, they probably did their first tour in a place that is easy to live in, such as a European capitol. If they are not a Consular coned officer, they likely resent the fact that they are not working in their cone. They may have done a political job in Vienna and now need to complete a consular tour to become tenured. That cushy European tour gave them no equity and the demand for visas was going to send them to Nigeria, India, or Brazil. If they live in Lagos, they cannot leave Victoria Island except in an armored car to go to the airport. If they live in Abuja they cannot go further than five miles in any one direction from the Embassy. They must travel to the airport in an armored car, and they must be there before sundown. The have attended a Course called “ConGen.” Where they learn how to adjudicate Non-Immigrant Visas, Immigrant Visas, issue passports, issue Consular Records of Birth Abroad, and other American Citizen Services. In that training they have been scarred to death of what can happen to them if they issue the wrong visa. “Your career is not worth their trip to the United States” is a common refrain. Because of the way the INA is written the burden is on the applicant. They don’t want to be seen as “easy” or soft. They will be reminded that more than 15% of the men under 35 who receive a visa overstay their visa. They have to interview over 100 people every day. They will be suffering from decision fatigue by the time the day is complete. When you complicate things such as funding and what have you it simply becomes too difficult. 214b and then move on to the next person. They will have other tasks to accomplish which range from the back office, interview waiver, and other things going on at the Embassy. Any important political Americans coming to visit Nigeria will need support from the Embassy and the Consulate. You need to make it easy for them to say yes. Because it is even easier to say no. 20 Likes 2 Shares |
