The funny thing is some victims have relatives and friends with the same ailment and they have never made any effort to send 1 naira.

It seems as though there is a special type of satisfaction that comes with giving via social media accounts undecided

Oh well. I am not at all surprised. There were obvious tell tale signs that the child was not suffering from any cancer.

I always saw this, rather than become emotional, I was always angry and swipe away the post because I thought it was child abuse, it didn’t seem real. Don’t get it wrong, asking for crowdfunding is not bad, however, I could sense the insincerity in my guts.

So who is the little girl? Where did she come from and who are her parents? I never liked the video when I saw it and wouldn't have been fooled by it. That was how I opened a gofund account on behalf of my late son Bryan in 2018. I didn't even know that people donated until my colleague told me to at least thank them for the contribution they made even though I lost Bryan. I fear because didn't even see the money and don't know what happened to my go-fund account again.

Immediately I saw that ad on YouTube, I knew something was wrong. With a Naija reasoning , i sensed scam.
The first day I saw it, I didn't like the ads, but couldn't curse the child.

That same day, I ended up seeing it more than 7 times in almost every single app I used that shows video ads.

I got upset and said, "Just die make we see road. Una ad don too much. How una manage get money to do plenty ads self?" I guess I'm vindicated. When something or someone appears too desperate, I always have suspicion.

Immediately I saw the ad for the first time, I knew something was off and I just stopped... I also knew it could be true tho' but economic situation no even let me reason say I wan verify to donate...

I still saw the video ad multiple times tho and I wasted no time skipping them smiley

Now we're wiser...

One thing that was off for me was absence of credibility... No credible company was standing behind them. If it was the UN, or UNICEF or one credible organization sha, it'd have been more believable

Plus I saw it been scripted, just a hunch tho'

Plus, we've seen this kinds of promotions over and over in Nigeria, from the hawker without legs to one talented but disabled person to well planned ploy for sympathies and all sort

It is well sha

We don learn one format be that... It means not every social media ad can be trusted. (I've had one experience with FB ads tho')

Like I have been saying, we should endeavour not to tribalize crime, nor make it seem like corruption is just an African thing. Criminals are found in all climes, as well as good people. The evidence lies right here.

'Cancer Girl' scam has stolen more than half a million dollars

EMMA MCGOWAN 26 JUL 2022

Since learning of the Cancer Girl scam, Avast researchers have blocked all of the related domains that they were able to find and protected almost 1,000 users in just 48 hours.

The past decade has seen a rise in personal crowdfunding, with people raising money online for everything from school supplies to medical bills to funeral expenses. The appeals go out on social media, imploring friends, families, and acquaintances to help. And, like so many other things online, some of these appeals are scams.

The Avast Threat Labs team recently identified one such scam circulating on YouTube. In a heartbreaking video ad, a little girl sits in a hospital gown. She appears with her head shaved and she’s crying as she speaks into the camera. She tells the viewer that she has cancer and that her family can’t afford treatment.

“The treatment costs a lot of money and my parents don’t have much money,” she cries. “Please help me get well. Please! I don’t want to die.”

The video is highly emotive and asks viewers to donate to the young girls’ cancer treatment via a linked donation fundraising page. If you want to save “Alexandra,” (or Ariela, Ksenia, or Barbara, depending on the video), you can contribute right away.

“While there’s no way to know who this little girl actually is or what her situation or her family’s circumstances are, we do know for sure that this is a scam and the more than $640,000 already raised will not go toward treatment,” Pavel Novak, Threat Operations Analyst at Avast, says. “Our research uncovered an entire series of videos which feature the same little girl, with appeals in Arabic, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Hebrew. We also found videos making similar appeals, but with different little girls.”

Overall, the Cancer Girl scam videos have been viewed more than 10 million times. Threat Labs research also found:

• All of the domains were registered very recently.

• The videos use anonymous email addresses, like (I have removed the email addresses because of the anti-spam bot, but basically they are just numbers and gmail addresses).

• “Alexandra” and “Ariela” have the same email contact addresses, despite videos of two different girls in what one can assume are very different geographies.

• The address can be traced to a residential complex in Jerusalem.

The videos also use hyperbolic claims, including the fact that Cancer Girl’s cancer has spread throughout her entire body. They ask for donations to treat said cancer, but if a cancer has spread that far then it’s likely too late for medical intervention. The lack of specificity is a common red flag in online scams.

“This scam, like so many, takes advantage of the altruistic impulses that humans have to help each other,” Novak says. “It’s especially malicious and unethical because it is potentially taking advantage of a real child, sick or not, whose video was either stolen for the scam or who is being forced to act out this scene. It also erodes peoples’ trust in personal crowdfunding and charity and siphons money away from real causes and institutions.”

Since learning of the Cancer Girl scam, Avast researchers have blocked all of the related domains that they were able to find and protected almost 1,000 users in just 48 hours. They also reported the videos to YouTube, and the scam to the Israel Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT), where the domains appear to be registered to.

Finally, there appear to be similar scams circulating via email. Avast researchers do not suspect the two campaigns to be related, despite such campaigns using the same scenario, however, teams like ours can only do so much — it’s up to each individual to treat everything they see online with a critical eye and pause before hitting that “donate” button.

[quote author=Sapiosexuality post=115597262]I don't keep criminals as friends/partners/etc. And Facebook friends are not friends. Facebook calls random people who send friend requests friends so I had to use the word.

Talking about maturity is a criminally minded way to put it. Maturity has nothing to do with morality. If you are into criminality we can't be one. I understand weaknesses but criminals are not my thing.

And by the way, look for another way to defend these criminals. It is obvious you don't consider what they are doing a problem. Maybe because you are doing it, you plan to do it, you are benefiting from it, etc., and most importantly because you don't care how it affects all of us.

My brother, like I have Nobody holy pass. I’m not defending anyone. You are not their friend. And don’t call them your friends.
