2023: Tinubu, Peter Obi Divide Yoruba Groups by dominic17: 8:11pm On Aug 13, 2022 |
From Oluseye Ojo, Ibadan Ahead of the 2023 presidential poll, major socio-cultural and political organisations in the South-West are currently divided over which of the leading political parties and presidential candidates to support for president. The leading presidential candidates include Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC); Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of Labour Party and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). In separate interviews with Saturday Sun, the groups were not on the same page on which candidate they would support for President. The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) said it has made its position known prior to the presidential primaries conducted by various political parties that the next president of Nigeria must come from the South. In a telephone interview with Saturday Sun, the Secretary-General of YCE, Dr. Kunle Olajide asserted that the council would throw its weight behind Tinubu to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari next year. He noted that the council would back Tinubu because he has contributed immensely to the nation’s development, saying the former Lagos governor was competent to serve as president of the country. Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has, however, ha never hidden his preference for the South East to produce the next President of Nigeria. But it could not be immediately confirmed whether his position is the same as that of the entire organisation. Saturday Sun reached out to some chieftains of Afenifere on the issue. But they said they would not make comments on the stance of Pa Adebanjo for the 2023 presidential poll. All efforts to contact the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Mr Jare Ajayi, on his mobile phone for the official position of Afenifere on the issue failed. The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), on its part, said it was more concerned with the issue of restructuring of the country. Iba Gani Adams, who is the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, and who spoke through his Special Assistant on Media, Alhaji Kehinde Aderemi, said the group was only interested in the restructuring of Nigeria such that true federalism would be practised in the country. He said the group had never been a political one and would not dabble into politics. “Aare Adams has been advocating restructuring of Nigerian into regions like we used to have in the past in this country, which made each region to develop at its own pace, have state police, have control over its resources and so on. This is what we stand for. We are concerned about security and cultural promotion of Yorubaland. We are not politicians.” The Leader of Apapo Egbe Alaabo Ile Oodua (Homeland Defence and Security Initiative), Dr. Victor Taiwo, also told Saturday Sun that the organisation was apolitical and only concerned about adequate security of lives and property in Yorubaland. The apex Yoruba self-determination group, Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO), which spoke through Mr Maxwell Adeleye, noted that the group had no faith in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. He explained that the IOO had been fighting against the conduct of the 2023 general elections, maintaining that it would not support Source: Sun News |

Divided because Tinubu is unmarketable and they've seen the hand writing on the wall(this is the reason every sane Yoruba wanted Osibanjo buh some people's eyes were blocked with religious sentiments).. Well, the honourable thing to do now is to back Peter Obi since some of them wants a Southern President because Tinubu is too old, fragile and sick..besides,no PDP or APC candidate will ever restructure this country because the structure of the country favors their evil and selfishness buh it's only Peter Obi might restructure the country if Nigeria youths prevail on him. I rest my case...Gracias!!!! 15 Likes 1 Share |

Softmirror:This your calculation does not make any sense. First, you assume that everyone in the SW is Yoruba. Secondly, for you to think that there are not 2 million Yorubas who would happily vote against Tinubu shows that you don't look beyond your circle. You do not interact with a wild range of Yorubas. |

Irony of nigerian politics among the three contesting candidates is that Hausa guys will rather vote for their brother Atiku than for Peter Obi or Tinubu, Tinubu too knew this that why he unanimously went to pick Shettima, thus the Muslim Muslim brouhaha. During the last elections in 2019, the gap between Atiku and Bubu wasn't much and everyone knew But now Atiku is having issues in PDP with Wike even this same Peter Obi was in PDP before, so they all know his secrets and will use it against him when the time is right. The last person now is still Tinubu, though he is having alot of issues, but he still have a chance, As for Peter Obi, it is a good prayer that his supporters will turn out on the day of election and stop voting on Twitter! 2 Likes |

If Tinubu believe in Equity and fairness he would step down to SE candidate. Atiku own is understandable because his region has not produced president too. 1 Like |

Softmirror:Away Omoluabi are going to vote for Peter Obi. Tinubu can never be president in Nigeria. He is too corrupt and too controversial. Only one out of the people I know here in Osun State wants to vote for Tinubu. Others are campaigning for Peter Obi free of charge.

Some of our Christian Brothers and sisters are more loyal to their religion than their region. If Tinubu was a Christian, all Yoruba Muslims will follow him with one mind like our fathers followed Awolowo. We are watching. If Tinubu failed to get block votes from South West because our Christian Brothers and sisters decide to follow Obi, we will respond at the appropriate time. If they vote their Christian brother from South East, we will vote our Muslim brother from the north in the future. Any Yoruba Christian candidate will no longer get our support. |

Logically speaking we are supposed to vote out APC and PDP to teach politicians some lessons. This will put them on check. When they know that people are willing to use their voting power against any party that fails. |
