TCN will lose relevance if the power bill goes into effect. So there may be retrenchments etal.

If you are laid off, your severance will be your current salary multiplied by several factors. The higher your salary, the higher your severance.

They saw it happen to nitel in the 2000s. A behemoth became irrelevant overnight. If you did not grow up in the 80/90s you cannot understand what GSM did to nitel.

We had a house in lagos but I had to receive calls in the neighbours house. You make international calls in public in a queue. You toast nitel ogas for years to get a line.

That is what I ultimately think this is about, but I may be reading too much into it

I know a family friend who exited NITEL due to the advent of GSM as u posited, I don't know how much he got paid but I know his severance package was enough for him to build hospital from the one full plot of land left in his compound. His wife was a chief matron in one of the big general hospitals in Lagos and his first son was almost through with his MBBS that time ; they only employed two doctors who were running shifts pending when his son finished his training as a doctor and took control of the place. Today baba is enjoying his retirement.

My problem is ; is there no other way any union of government employees can get the government's attention apart from strike?

I took a borrowed course in Industrial relations & personnel management in school and u see professors talking about so many ways employees can express their grievances to their employers, why are none of those media yẹ idling results aside from strike in our own society? What is wrong with us?

You may not be far from the truth, but successive governments too have not helped matters. Some reckless and unnecessary government spendings too give these people impetus to make such demands on the government.

Someone was saying a senior lecturer earns ₦220k while Someone like Bashir Ahmed the twitter guy gets paid ₦800k plus. Stuff like this make people agitate and make demands on government even when the goverment says it can't afford to pay higher. I think cost of governance is unnecessarily too high in this part of the world. So these people will just blackmail the government into shifting ground or paint the government bad in the eyes of the people

From my personal experience government hardly listens to grievances unless workers go on strike.

A lot of postponement of meetings and promises to review grievances. Lots of sending third parties to cajole, threaten or bribe union leaders. Incredibly skilled time wasting techniques. And not just a few minutes like in football both a few months to a few years.

People make up government. In fact the bulk of the government is made up of the civil service. Those who will not go to work and make those who need their service to suffer, those that will sabotage procedures put into place for things to run smoothly so they can make quick bucks, those who will wake up one morning and decide who shut down a critical national assets because they dont want to write promotional exams.

Yes, the country is lawless because we have lawless people from top to bottom.

i am surprised there were no issues in jamb when oloyede blocked all the leakages and turned jamb into a parastatal returning surplus. because all that surplus is money that was eaten by snakes for years

ASUU has been shouting about IPPIS telling different stories about it - but meanwhile every other FG employee is on IPPIS no story. you know what ASUU are proposing - their own 'inhouse software 'UTAS' to manage thier salaries. effectively ASUU want to administer their own payroll using software they probably got off the internet . even worse, is that they did not even think it through at all. so called demos of ythe software. a package managing the payroll info of all of nigerias lecturers. oya where are the servers? where are they located? where is the backup power? where is the disaster recovery site? and these are supposed to be lecturers, who do not even know the basics


a lot of the time, there may be genuine grievances - but none of these unions are able to communicate them. all we get is emotional takes not grounded in reality.

i am sure you have read different stories in the news about military big wigs who diverted money.

so is it the government, or the ogas in the police and military

where I fault the government [GMB and GEJ admins] is in the very poor and slipshod prosecution of ogas at the top caught
