Theres no light because TCN has shut down the national grid over promotional interview.

A lawless country.

The restored it this morning before I left home.

I don't even know the head or tail of their agitation sef, the whole promotional interview reason just sounds dumb to me.

This is my take.

TCN will lose relevance if the power bill goes into effect. So there may be retrenchments etal.

If you are laid off, your severance will be your current salary multiplied by several factors. The higher your salary, the higher your severance.

They saw it happen to nitel in the 2000s. A behemoth became irrelevant overnight. If you did not grow up in the 80/90s you cannot understand what GSM did to nitel.

We had a house in lagos but I had to receive calls in the neighbours house. You make international calls in public in a queue. You toast nitel ogas for years to get a line.

That is what I ultimately think this is about, but I may be reading too much into it

Pdp went with the person who had the money to sort them. They should never have let Atiku and Saraki back into the party. People who actively sabotaged them in 2015,and they came.back straight to oga at the top positions.

I blame wike for not saying anything in 2019. That gave Atiku legitimacy after his betrayal.

I know a family friend who exited NITEL due to the advent of GSM as u posited, I don't know how much he got paid but I know his severance package was enough for him to build hospital from the one full plot of land left in his compound. His wife was a chief matron in one of the big general hospitals in Lagos and his first son was almost through with his MBBS that time ; they only employed two doctors who were running shifts pending when his son finished his training as a doctor and took control of the place. Today baba is enjoying his retirement.

My problem is ; is there no other way any union of government employees can get the government's attention apart from strike?

I took a borrowed course in Industrial relations & personnel management in school and u see professors talking about so many ways employees can express their grievances to their employers, why are none of those media yeidling results aside from strike in our own society? What is wrong with us?

Most times strike is used as a blackmailing tool to force the hand of govt to their demand because the unions know that govt will automatically take the blame whatever happens.

You may not be far from the truth, but successive governments too have not helped matters. Some reckless and unnecessary government spendings too give these people impetus to make such demands on the government.

Someone was saying a senior lecturer earns ₦220k while Someone like Bashir Ahmed the twitter guy gets paid ₦800k plus. Stuff like this make people agitate and make demands on government even when the goverment says it can't afford to pay higher. I think cost of governance is unnecessarily too high in this part of the world. So these people will just blackmail the government into shifting ground or paint the government bad in the eyes of the people

I just watched a video of Wike saying they run " Jesus economy" in Rivers state. He said people ask where the money they use to execute projects have been coming from but he told them they run " Jesus economy" cos Jesus fed 5,000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes.... grin

The day an entirely different/new party wins the governorship election in Rivers state is the day people of the state will know these guys have stolen billions from that state from Odili to Amaechi to Wike.

From my personal experience government hardly listens to grievances unless workers go on strike.

A lot of postponement of meetings and promises to review grievances. Lots of sending third parties to cajole, threaten or bribe union leaders. Incredibly skilled time wasting techniques. And not just a few minutes like in football both a few months to a few years.

I agree that our cost of governance is too high because of the kind of representative government we are running.

Salaries and allowance of public servants (elected or appointee) needs to be reduced drastically but if you check our recurrent expenditures, MDA salaries is what make the bulk of those expenditures. Theres no way you are going to reduce cost of governance without merging/dissolving a lot of agencies and we know the cry that will follow from it. The Oronsaye report is there on how we can cut cost of governance but who will retrench workers and the public will go against him/her for being heartless?

While we are talking of cost of governance, the National Assembly are in the process of creating new agencies and departments.

Also political appointee salaries are always tenured and non pensionable.

When you say government, who do you refer to as government? The politicians or who?

People make up government. In fact the bulk of the government is made up of the civil service. Those who will not go to work and make those who need their service to suffer, those that will sabotage procedures put into place for things to run smoothly so they can make quick bucks, those who will wake up one morning and decide who shut down a critical national assets because they dont want to write promotional exams.

Yes, the country is lawless because we have lawless people from top to bottom.

APC led government which you are a member made the country lawless

Come on, you think some bodies will just wake up and decide to shut down electricity without a pending issue, was that how ASUU started or labour etc
If the soldiers decide to stop fighting now you will criticize them but we have been seeing videos of complaints about unpaid salaries and outdated weapons

PDP has had southerners as their candidates for 13 of the 16 years they held power, zoning to the south again would make the party start looking like a southern party.

Not about party zoning formular but the north/south rotational presidency. Even d PDP as a party ignored her constutitional provision.

It is only on Nairaland that Shettima would wrestle votes from Atiku in the NE.

I have said it before. The flogging Atiku would give Shettima in NE would be resounding

I get your point though, but the PDP was between a rock and a hard place and they chose the candidate that had the best chance of returning them to power, can't fault them on that.

pending issue

a lot of reforms lead to 'pending issues'

i am surprised there were no issues in jamb when oloyede blocked all the leakages and turned jamb into a parastatal returning surplus. because all that surplus is money that was eaten by snakes for years

ASUU has been shouting about IPPIS telling different stories about it - but meanwhile every other FG employee is on IPPIS no story. you know what ASUU are proposing - their own 'inhouse software 'UTAS' to manage thier salaries. effectively ASUU want to administer their own payroll using software they probably got off the internet . even worse, is that they did not even think it through at all. so called demos of ythe software. a package managing the payroll info of all of nigerias lecturers. oya where are the servers? where are they located? where is the backup power? where is the disaster recovery site? and these are supposed to be lecturers, who do not even know the basics

a lot of the time, there may be genuine grievances - but none of these unions are able to communicate them. all we get is emotional takes not grounded in reality.

the soldiers and police have a CHAIN OF COMMAND

the police have a ministry for police affairs.

i am sure you have read different stories in the news about military big wigs who diverted money.

so is it the government, or the ogas in the police and military

where I fault the government [GMB and GEJ admins] is in the very poor and slipshod prosecution of ogas at the top caught

when tafa baloguns story broke - obj immediately had him sacked and investigated and jailed

that sends a message to everyone.

You are right but then essential workers should not be going on strike or even attempt to tamper with critical national assets.

It depends on the reason for the strike. You can’t make a blanket statement that essential workers should never go on strike when government treats them like trash sometimes.

You can’t deny them that right that other workers have to go on strike and then still maltreat them just because they are essential workers. If they are so essential then treat accordingly. Being an essential worker should not be a punishment.
