mach7: Your post actually justifies my surprise about people saying rubbish about corruption. Majority of them don't just know a thing yet want to say something. They end up saying trash. The blockage of repatriation of their funds is basically economic induced. 1 Like |

This is not the solution. Even if we have local airlines, the airline industry is highly dollarized. They will need dollars for C-checks, maintenance, for some staff (when you employ foreigners), for international operations. Our problem is a revenue problem, and that’s what govt needs to solve. Blocking funds will reduce investor confidence all through the country and not just in the airline industry. It started from reducing personal access to USD from $1k per month to nothing now. Govt needs to block leakages (there are people still stealing public funds daily), improve security (especially with oil theft. The oil tanker that was caught in Equatorial Guinea had capacity of 3m barrels. That’s three times all the oil we produce per day. If those guys succeeded, this means in about one week of operation, they will make 300m USD. Imagine that we sell that and it’s not stolen, that’s enough to pay the airlines at least for now. This is one tanker, imagine other tankers that are coming in. Imagine other sources of public funds leakage. We need to salvage this country, but before then, before the end of this year, arrange your immigration tips, your international flights will be from Cotonou, Lome or Accra. mach7: |

Allowing Godwin Emefiele (a politician) to continue to preside as CBN Governor confirmed Buhari dumbness. This man has totally destroyed the economy. It was even wrong to appoint him CBN Governor in the first. He is a Finance graduate ,a banker who knows nothing about Monetary economics. 1 Like |

mach7:I understand where you are coming from and was waiting for someone to mention this since. However local airlines cannot fill the void left by Emirates or foreign international airlines. I'll give you the reasons. 1. They are not regular international airlines and Nigeria is not a global hub. They will surely have problems maintaining large aircraft which do not fly regularly. Imagine that Delta and Emirates have their large planes flying everyday but Arik and Air Peace have to fly their Aircraft once or twice a week. The aircraft will be underused and costs will be high. 2. They will still have the same problems as Emirates. Most of an airline's revenue will go into operational costs which mostly is spent in dollars. Unless they source from the black market, they will not be to get dollars too. Both foreign and local airlines service their aircraft abroad. 3. Many have legal issues flying abroad especially the west where standards are high. Some have safety issues. Arik piled a lot of debt and had her aircraft seized in the US sometime ago. Air Peace is facing corruption and money laundering charges. 2 Likes |

Very good points. But could the solution be a "Russian style" command economy viz a viz the Airline industry? I mean Russia was subject to a massive barrage of sanctions including on its Airline industry. Yet they nationalised all their foreign owned planes, stopped paying the owners in Dollars, but rather in Roubles, starting doing the maintenance and certifications internally and flew only to destinations where their own certification standards is being accepted. While at the same time quickly reviving their own aircraft manufacturing industry. Honestly in my view, free market (liberalism) isn't helping us especially in Airline industry as we are being taken advantaged of. Imagine the airlines selling tickets in Naira and choosing to repatriate in Dollars. iguita: |

jrusky:there is no "physical" money FG is blocking. They want to charge Nigerians exorbitant airfare but FG is blocking them from doing that. That's what that tweet is stating. So they are calculating that excess as the funds FG is blocking. They want fares to be paid directly in foreign currency at their own rate without any sort of regulation. If you compare air fare from U.K to U.S and compare from Nigeria to U.K., you realise how exploitative these international airlines are. 1 Like |
