This is my first post since I have been on Nairaland. But what I have noticed on the pet section is that many owners cannot train their dogs on their own. And I would like to expose dog owners to training dogs.
First I would like people who are interested to notify by telling is the name of their dog and their dogs breed, so that it would be easy for others to be able to track their dog training success after they started learning it here on Nairaland.
Be it stubborn Caucasian shepherd, boerboel, cane for so, rottweiler, pit bulls, bull mastiff, or any other breed irrespective of the age, this guide would help you.
Firstly, before indicating, you should acquire, a clicker or a retractable pen. I would start with clicker training, and later I would introduce the use of other marker words, like yes, good boy and the likes. The reason is that with the use of the clicker( retractable pen if you do not have clicker, or you download Clicker app in your phone), you would be able to practically understand the mistakes pet owners make, right in your house.
The reason for the indication is that I would start from the easy commands like sit, to complex tricks and I want others to easily understand how those who tried it could train their dog without the help of the trainer, and like I said it would be easy to track their success.
Once anyone has indicated that he is ready, and he has a clicker, retractable pen or he has downloaded the clicker app from play store, I would start giving tips and then you watch the magic in dog training.
Note; in case you are not sure of what is retractable pen. It is that office pen that makes a sound when you press the top. Please always go for the loudest you can get in the bookshop. If it is not loud it is not useful.
Please indicate your interest if you are interested as fast as you can so you do not drag others behind.
For critics, watch and see how dog owners would testify, even the Caucasian shepherd owners, would do so.
Please be ready to buy treats, without treats you can do nothing if you are not experienced.

Have you gotten a retractable pen, dowloaded clicker app, or bought a clicker.
Re: Free Guide On Training Your Dog by lightk9: 12:01pm On May 13, 2022
It seems nairalanders are not interested in clicker training.
Just tell me the problem you are facing with your dog( in terms of training), and tell me its breed and its age. Even though it is a local dog, or foreign dog it does not matter, i would inform you here on nairaland on what to do and after trying it you would write back before Nairaland how it has helped your dog.
I am here to help.

I have a 5 month Lhasa apso
She’s playful and energetic
Bought booster only once
She eats all local food

I recently thought of going for the normal dog food so she will be big and very hairy before her first heart

Please what food can you suggest and I’ll like if there’s a way I can make any myself
Low budget please

She’s too small for her age

She poo and pee around the house which is disturbing

I have 2 dogs. A 1yr+ Lhasa Apso and a 1 year old American Eskimo.

I potty trained these two dogs same way, including behavioral. They even have toys.

My Eskimo is stubborn in my opinion. Out of 10 points, she potty in the right place 7x and the last 3 points she does what she likes every time

The Lhasa apso maintains the same area in the house, my Eskimo jumps around with poo and pee and pees at the right place at will.

I don’t know what to do about her. I’ve retrained her but seems she has a mind of her own and doesn’t follow strict patterns.

She even loves stealing food behind your back or sneak on you

How do you expect to train the dog like this?? That your friend just gave you wrong advice in fact that your friend shouldn't even have access to dogs
You beat your dog for no good reason and you still expecting that same dog to trust you enough to obey your commands?? You've only succeeded in making the dog afraid of you and that's why it's biting you, cause it's at the point where it's either you or the dog. And you'll now sell the heavily traumatized dog to another person to clean up your mess abi?? Please put in mind beating your dog does more harm than good, positive reinforcement is the best way to get the most out of training your dog (that is rewarding for good behaviour instead of punishing for bad behaviour) dogs are eager to please you so as you reward them for good behaviour, they tend to do more of the good behaviour and less of the bad. DON'T BEAT YOUR DOGS!!!

Sorry for not replying earlier, I did not see any reply earlier and I just abandoned nairaland, till today I check again and saw that some people have responded.
For the person who said he has two Caucasian and is ordering a clicker, just tell me the issue you have with them, what you have trained them to do already and the remaining you want to accomplish, so that I would write out a full training plan for you, the steps you should take and things to avoid during training.

No need to send the dog out. get a clicker, or retractable pen once you do that, I would tell you what to do and in 1week you would start seeing a changed dog.

Just get a retractable pen, clicker or lighter, and inform me once you do that. Do not fret they would be easy to train.

Meet a good vet. A vet would be able to tell you the best feed for your dog. Although when he is up to 6 month you can change to a locally made food(self prepared). You can remind me when she is 6 months old. For now let her eat a food with the balanced proportion of nutrients needed for her.
For the training, get a clicker, retractable pen or lighter( prefer lighter to retractable pen). Once you do so inform me, and write the problems you encounter with her, the commands she obeys and those you want to train her to obey.

If you do not have it around your area its better to buy lighter, retractable pen is that office pen that you press at the top, you would need to go for a loud one, but the best alternative to real clicker is lighter. Any one you buy, once you get it just tell me.

I'm glad you have gotten a clicker, welcome to positive reinforcement training method.
First thing to do now is to;
CHARGE THE CLICKER: This means communicating to your puppy that once he hears the sound of the clicker good things would come. This makes your puppy know that he just did something right and would be rewarded for it. To do this click(press the clicker) and immediately give your puppy a treat. Repeat this 30 times at so that your puppy learns that when you click a treat would come. After doing this for each of the puppy, end the training session there.
If you did this in the morning you would have another training session in the afternoon and/or evening, if it was afternoon you have another training session in the evening and/ or morning. Same procedure goes for evening
In the next training session you would have to take one puppy at a time to another room and train, after which you would release him and take the second one and repeat the same procedures.
To make this training session go well stick to the procedures I am giving you strictly.
STEP 1: Release your puppy in the room with you, stand still, do not talk to, touch or give your puppy any treat, even if he barks, run about, bite or do any other thing, just ignore totally. As soon as he sits, click and throw a treat close to him so that he would have to go and take the treat. Stand still and remain motionless again, just wait,as soon as he sits, click and treat, repeat this 5 times.
STEP 2: As soon as your puppy eat that treat the 5th time( in step 1), say sit, click and toss the treat a step away from you, as soon as he eats the treat say sit, click and toss the treat a step away from you. Keep repeating this till the end of the session.
NOTE: Each training session should be five minute only, if you make it more than five minutes as a novice you are on your own.
TREAT: is something your puppy is a food that your puppy is ready to chase you for. Some dogs prefer fish, some canned food, some meat e.t.c. But you should cut the treat into many small pieces so that your puppy would quickly eat the treat and offer the behaviour again. YOUR TREAT MUST BE MANY AND BE IN SMALL PIECES ( cut it into small pieces).
When training put some pieces of the treat in your pocket so that when you click, you IMMEDIATELY, remove ONE PIECE of the treat and toss to him. Remember to stand still when training, only your hand should move.
Do not reply until your two puppies learn to sit when you do so( so that the thread would not be too long), except you have question, when you puppy has learnt it, reply with your experience for others to learn and a picture of each puppy sitting on command.

There was a reply I gave to bigbauer at 11:16 am today. Scroll up to see it,read it and start from there for training. If you take it seriously your dog would be able to sit on command before tomorrow morning. Remember the more you take training seriously the more you would understand how it is done and your puppy would be able to learn. once he has learnt to sit on command, reply with a picture of him sitting on command and your experiences. Then we would move to another command.
