Here Matthew is talking about Mary's ancestral lineage (not Joseph's) according to Jewish custom Joseph became the son of Mary's father by marriage, that's why Matthew mentioned Mary as the one who was born from that lineage.

That's why you will notice a slight difference in the lineage from David to Joseph in Luke's account because Luke was talking about Joseph's ancestry while Matthew was referring to Mary's ancestry.
