Why Are The Streets Of Lagos Always Stinking by irunoko(m): 6:22am On Aug 26, 2022 |
I notice that anytime I come to Lagos, the streets are disgustingly filled with stentch either from exposed drainages, canals or heaps of open waste and human or animal fecal matter that will decay on that spot.the air and noise pollution is insane but I don't even want to talk about the noise part,it's the air pollution and this is so because it's extremely dangerous to public health but Lagosians seem not to perceive the foul odor. They go about their businesses like they are completely ignorant of the consequences of inhaling toxins and behaving recklessly on a daily basis At a point I was wondering that is it only me perceiving the odor and no one else is. The culturally accepted filthy lifestyle is so bad that suya sellers sell their suya directly on top of the gutters.same with food traders that wash their dishes and kitchen utensils directly on top of gutters and many of them sell their foods directly on top of the gutters. Both the seller and buyers don't even think hygiene is important Some food hawkers and vendors that hawk Moi Moi,suya, Abacha, Rice, stick meat and other edibles even open their wares around or close to mountain of dustbin while flies Will be having a field day on top of the food but they don't perceive anything even when someone is urinating or pooing around/close to wherever they are.even religious houses like churches and mosque that you expect to take air pollution seriously aren't bothered.you Will pass by some churches and you will be perceiving dried urine of so many people.some even urinate directly on the walls at the back of the church, same with mosque whenever they wash their hands, feet, Mouth and face,it's always directly inside the gutter and the Outer environment where they are praying is filthy so I wonder how come filth has become an accepted lifestyle even in prayer houses The worst part are those that block the road/streets every Friday in the name of Muslim prayers where they will erect canopies or Christians saying they are doing crusade and then worship ,pray ,chant, kill enemies in a smelling environment, same with owanmbe lovers on Saturday do the same thing, block the road you are praying to quickly exit from and they will be comfortably eating, drinking and dancing to a noisy Fuji music in a filthy environment that makes you want to puke.even after the party, the waste of food, disposable packs and bottles will be left on the ground to rot.some will even throw it into the already blocked and smelling canals and gutters yet all of that population sees nothing wrong with such unhealthy pattern So my question is am I the one overthinking it or crazy or Lagos is not actually stinking? I'm referring to places like bariga, ketu, shomolu, ikorodu, oyingbo, yaba, festac, okota, mile 12,mile 2, Maza Maza, amuwo odofin, iyana ipaja, ikotun, iyana Iba,lasu gate, okoko, ajangbadi ,ajah etc.some might say O those are trenches, even supposedly elite residential areas are stinking too, the only difference is that they are not as crude and lousy as those in the trenches |

Redoil: You skipped mathematics class alot. So, you are saying over 80 million Nigerians are living in Lagos? @OP, the truth is, an average Omoluabi is dirty. Anywhere Omoluabis are occupying over 64%, that place is bound to smell. I don't know how they do it. How their women use hand to pack their children's shiit will tell you more. You'll see someone happily selling agbo close to open dirty gutter and people will still be patronising her. 5 Likes |

Over population and poor urban planning in Lagos makes it congested and stinks. However Tokyo in Japan which is far more populated than Lagos is very neat and environmentally friendly coz of good planning and collaboration among citizens. I once stayed at Ikeja GRA close to MMA and the area was always always humid, hot and smelling coz of the drainages. Infact Lagos lacks green vegetation to clean up the high carbon in the atmosphere.

Onitsha s by far the worst place to live. The town smells terrible . The major highway connected to Niger bridge has its drains covered in human excrement. You need a 3M military grade air filter to avoid inhaling microscopic fecal natter. As you approach Niger Bridge by Onitsha bridge head it gets unbearable because of constant burning of waste material from the market . But once you cross to Asaba - a city that is less than 3km away, the air is clean and the environment more suitable for humans. Onitsha is a terrible place on all indices to live and work.. Other than the pollution, there are thieves , armed robbers and kidnappers waiting for you at the bridge head. Onitsha needs to be cleansed with a nuke to sterilize the fcking place . Don't ever visit that place if you plan to for any reason whatsoever. 6 Likes |

UNTIL NIGERIANS AND THEIR LEADERS GET IT INTO THEIR THICK AND STUPID SKULLS THAT ''OPEN DRAINAGE'' IS A DISGUSTING, PRIMITIVE, SUBSTANDARD AND UNACCEPTABLE FORM OF DRAINAGE, IN A WORLD WHERE ALL DRAINAGE IS COVERED, WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEE THIS NONSENSE. WHY IT HASN'T PERMEATED THEIR THICK SKULLS WE DON'T KNOW, YET THEY ARE IN LONDON EVERYDAY TO MEET WIKE AND OBI AND WHAT NOT. DO THEIR THICK, STUPID SKULLS SEE ANY OPEN GUTTERS IN LONDON? IS EVERY STREET THERE NOT COVERED WITH SIDEWALKS? What is so hard about building a sidewalk and covering your drains? Yet you find money to build flyovers to nowhere, everywhere. STUPID, MUMU PEOPLE WITH NO WORKING BRAINS. THE NIGERIAN MASSES THEMSELVES ACCEPT THE OPEN GUTTERS AND EVEN PRAISE THE LEADERS FOR PROVIDING WHAT THEY CALL ''DRAINAGES'' - OPEN GUTTERS WITH NO SIDEWALKS FOR PEDESTRIANS. SO WHY WILL EVERYWHERE NOT STINK? IGNORANT, DISGUSTING SET OF PEOPLE WITH NO SHAME OR BASIC COMMON SENSE. Normal street around the world built by normal people. Make una no learn betta thing. irunoko:When people stay in the midst of strong smells for too long, they tend to get so used to it that they no longer find it as abnormal. Lagos is an exceptionally dirty place, and without meaning to offend anyone, I think the major problem is the indigenes. Their level of hygiene, both personal and environmental, is appalling. 1 Like |

Zonefree: Well, you can't leave your rotten Alaigbo republic and go to Lagos and complain after passing through Onitsha . Even the dirt and heaps of garbage in Abia is another thing all together. Owerri is very disorganised and like every other SE town other than Abakalaiki, there is no sense of public space management. Heaps of refuse, dirty streets and uncleared drains in between haphazard town planning. Enugu is also very dirty as well other than the GRA areas and independent layout. Abakpa is one large slum with zero amenities . The lack of pipe borne water or boreholes makes Enugu particularly very dangerous as water borne diseases are rife. I caught a very bad case of Typhoid and Cholera at the same time just from patronizing restaurants in that useless diseased town. Abakpa is one of the biggest slums in Nigeria comparable to Marraba in Nassarawa which houses at least 50% of Enugu population. The place has no pipe borne water or drainage. People rely on subterranean dams that trap surface and subsurface water which they erroneously call wells. There is no access to ground water as Enugu shale bed is very close to the surface making ground water from wells and boreholes impossible to access. What they term as wells is actually runoffs from floods and subsurface flows during rainy season. These wells also capture waste water from all soakaway pits that dot this highly dense settlement . So their wells are actually polluted water from soakaways. This is why water borne diseases like avoidable cholera is endemic to Enugu - a supposedly modern city. The only livable place in the yeast is Abakalaiki under Dave Umahi. The place has been sanitized . When I got to the yeast the first time I was shocked how dirty the place is and how personal hygiene is on par with northerners and yorubas. The three major tribes share one thing and that is how extremely dirty they are but the yeast is very dirty with zero amenities . In the north , their water boards are functioning. Name one useless city or town in the yeast other than parts of Enugu city that still has a functional water board? The yeast has zero public amenities and I wonder what exactly are your useless governors actually doing ? So before you complain of other peoples backyard, note that your useless yeast remains the worst place to live in Nigeria. 4 Likes |

irunoko: You don't even need to visit so called first world nations. Go to Rwanda, Kenya, Jamaica, Tanzania etc. You will rarely ever see a street that does not have covered drains with sidewalks for pedestrians. It is standard practice around the world, including Africa. It's only in West Africa that countries like Nigeria and Ghana continue to disgrace themselves with their primitive, stinking open gutters, and zero thought for pedestrian infrastructure like sidewalks, which are seen at best as a luxurious afterthought for 'highbrow' areas, and not a RIGHT of all taxpaying citizens. 1 Like |

You even mentioned few towns, my brother no where is safe in Lagos. I once worked with school of fisheries and marine technology at Victoria Island and I pass the most developed places of Lagos every morning and evening. Both ikoyi oo, Lekkioo, V.I oo, etc all de smell especially if you near the seas. The problem is 1. Over population. 2. No proper urban plan. 3. Most indigenes and some strangers have a dirty lifestyle. 4. No Road side gutters and where there is, it will be an open gutters. Who does open gutters in a populated city like Lagos? 5. No proper disposal of Effluents from industries and firms. Just mistakenly near that Lekki ShopRite in the Afternoon, you will tell. Lagos is badly planned 2 Likes |

irunoko: Charity begins at home. Go and fix your own corner before dragging Lagos with yorubas. You will run from your blighted yeast to Lagos for your survival and when you get there begin to complain of the place as if them force you come Lagos . Not stopping there you will be condemning Lagos while lying how wonderful your yeast is to those who haven't been there. One day I was in one bar in Abuja and this toad like Igbo man kept complaining about Abuja while praising his yeast. Normally it won't have bothered me but I just returned from said blighted yeast and was recovering from Cholera and Typhoid I contracted there and was so pissed off by the Igbo man's outright lies of his blighted yeast that I simply asked him which part of the yeast he was from. When he responded Enugu and I began to tell him how to get to his village from Enugu city, the idiot went quiet because he knew I knew that his village is a shithole like his entire state. So you igbos should stop lying to yourselves about how glorious your yeast is while living outside of it and condemning your host. .. If the yeast is too good why did you have to move to Lagos ?
