#Introduction

This is a common problem during pregnancy. Current stat shows that as many as half of pregnant women get constipated at some point during pregnancy.

Overtime, an increase in the hormone progesterone was found to be the chief culprit, because it relaxes smooth muscles throughout the body, including the digestive tract and this means that food passes through the intestines more slowly, leading to constipation.

#Overview

Normally constipation occurs when there is abdominal pain or discomfort, difficult and infrequent bowel movements, and the passage of hard stools.
Constipation is defined medically as fewer than three stools per week and severe constipation as less than one stool per week.
Medical evaluation of constipation should be done in pregnancy when constipation is of sudden onset, severe, worsening, associated with other worrisome symptoms such as loss of weight, or is not responding to simple, safe and effective treatments.
Medical evaluation of constipation may include a history, physical examination, blood tests, abdominal X-rays, barium enema. The goal of therapy for constipation is one bowel movement every two to three days without straining.

#What causes constipation during pregnancy?

In general, worry, anxiety, minimal physical exercise, and a low-fiber diet may cause constipation.

Specifically constipation in pregnant women is thought to occur due to hormones (estrogen and progesterone) that relax the intestinal muscle and by the pressure of the expanding uterus on the intestines.
Relaxation of the intestinal muscle causes food and waste to move slower through your system.
Please, also note, sometimes iron tablets may contribute to constipation. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water if you are taking iron supplements.

You may need to switch to a different type of iron tablet, but it is important to talk to your health care provider first. Pelvic floor dysfunction can also cause constipation.

#Symptoms

Some of the symptoms of constipation include

1. lower abdominal discomfort,

2. infrequent bowel movements,

3. straining to have a bowel movement,

4. hard or small stools,

5. rectal bleeding and/or anal fissures caused by hard stools, and

6. Physiological distress and/or obsession with having bowel movements

#Treatment

Treatment of constipation may include:

1. Dietary fiber,

2. Non-stimulant laxatives,

3. Stimulant laxatives,

4. Enemas,

5. Suppositories,

6. Prescription medications,

7. And even surgery.

#How can I prevent or treat constipation during pregnancy?

Prevention and treatment of constipation involve many of the same steps.

Here are a few things that you can do to help prevent constipation from occurring or treat it if you are already experiencing it.

1.Eat a high fiber diet: Ideally, you will consume 25 to 30 grams per day of dietary fiber from fruits, vegetables, breakfast cereals, whole grain breads, prunes and bran.

2. Drink a lot of fluids: Drinking plenty of fluids is important, particularly when increasing fiber intake. Drink 10 to 12 cups of fluids each day. It is the combination of a high fiber diet and plenty of liquids that best help you eliminate your waste. Sweat, hot/humid climates, and exercise may increase your need for additional fluids.

3. Exercise routinely: If you are inactive, you have a greater chance of constipation. Walking, swimming and other moderate exercise helps the intestines work by stimulating your bowels. Schedule exercise three times a week for 20-30 minutes each.

4.Over-the-counter remedies: There are over-the-counter products such as which may help soften your bowel movements and reduce constipation. Always speak to your health care provider before using over-the-counter medications.

5. Reduce or eliminate iron supplements: Iron supplements may contribute to constipation. Good nutrition can often meet your iron needs during pregnancy. Taking smaller doses of iron throughout the day rather than taking it all at once can reduce constipation.

Talk to your health care provider about checking your iron levels and recommendations to manage iron intake during pregnancy.

#What remedies should not be used for constipation during pregnancy?

Please, Laxative pills are NOT recommended for the treatment of constipation during pregnancy because they might stimulate uterine contractions and cause dehydration. DO NOT USE LAXATIVES!

Mineral oils should NOT be used during pregnancy because they reduce nutrient absorption.

Find more fulfilling things to focus on, making money, learning a new skill, hobbies, etc. Just distract your thoughts from him and the miscarriage, cry and pour your heart out to God to relieve the burden.

The truth is that 99% of them cheat, they know there are no consequences for husband cheating so they take advantage of that fact. It's the same everywhere, don't let it break you down, you are above that, God has bigger and better plans for you in future, just dust yourself up and keep pushing. I wish you all the best.

Good morning everyone and happy new month.

Please help a sister.
I noticed this annoying headache on one side of my head(right side) last 2sundays. Was using paracetamol but it persisted. On Wednesday which was my clinic day,I complained to the Doctor. Was given white vit.c alongside other routine drugs.
I couldn't withstand the pain,went back on Friday. The Doc. that attended to me gave me Ampliclox and loratidine (which I stopped using on Sunday as my mind did not go well with the drugs).
Been managing the pain ever since but yesterday, noticed it has spread to my nose region
Sorry for the epistle but please,is it part of the package? Cos I haven't experienced this before
