Sorted my labor fee issues with the bricklayer.

I need advice on the best way to tackle the issue in the attached picture.

The two proposed pillars seen in the picture are supposed to be in between the blocks but apparently it was shifted outwards.

I am being told, the iron can be bent into the new position but I don't see how that won't affect the effectiveness of the pillars and the weight they're intended to carry.

What is the best way to fix this situation as putting the pillars on the original spot will reduce the width of the veranda/passage way. The area is also the landing after climbing stair from the ground floor to access three flats.

I don't think there is any specific duration for a sand filled site to settle before u can build on it, if the sandfilling process is properly done and a good soil bearing capacity is achieved.


Sandfilling is expected to be done in layers and each layer compacted with an appropriate compactor to achieve a soil bearing capacity that can conveniently support the intended load or building. It is advisable to employ the services of geotechnical consultant during the sandfilling process especially for large builds. The soil bearing capacity should be confirmed by geotechnical investigation or testing of the site before building on it.

In addition to compacting in layers, it is better to soak the sand with water to removes the pores or voids within it. Personally, I always recommend that the sandfilled site goes through series of heavy rainfall as well.

So whatever duration it takes you to get all these done is good enough in my opinion.

The process is called "cranking". They hope to crank the rebar into the new position. I've had similar experience in the past but mine was due to daft workmanship and not to gain space as with your situation.

My solution was simple, decommissioned the daft team and engage a new team to re-align the blocks according to the drawings.

However, cranking do work in some situations like in cantilever outcome but from the photo you posted, I'm not sure the structural integrity of the building would not be affected as this was not planned in the original design as against cantilever cranking which has been factored in from the design.

Is there a resident structural engineer? And do you trust their qualifications and EXPERIENCE? If yes, let them guide you. Nothing beats a structural engineer who knows what they are doing. But if you are doing DIY or using Baba Lati, na there the problem start. No be the cranking per se .

Please Note: I'm NOT a structural engineer. Not even close.

Ideally, the cost of an architectural design should be like 10% of the estimated cost of the structure you intend to build Sir, so 200k isn't that much.

I paid 400k for architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical drawings for a 4 bedroom bungalow, 2 semi-detached self contained and a carport, and I'm glad I did.

I would say it's a fair price considering the details that comes with it. A well detailed architectural plan will have everything detailed to make the structure outstanding in beauty and construction economy. I can do it for less though if you would inbox me. Putting a room that far from a kitchen isn't architecture .

It should work, that would mean extending the foundation to the place you marked, i will suggest that you leave the guest room door where it is, that green line i marked would provide some form of privacy, take out the visitors toilet, to where i marked blue, i recommend is better that way, you can also seek for the opinion of your architect.

Is it really a must that visitors' toilet will be located near the main entrance of a house?
