The problem is can FG handle the effect of such increment. What is good for the goose is also good for the gander. Hence if you pay profs. #800,000, other teachers across the sector will also demand for an enormous increment.
Then the Doctors, Judges, Civil servants, Electric workers etc will embark on their own strikes to demand for their own increment.

I addressed this in my other post. I am an economist, thus I know the cost implications of such. The solution is that federal and state universities have to start generating funds to cater for a percentage of their salaries. If all schools are encouraged to take part-time and distance learning programmes, engage in career training programmes, offer other related services, they can safely contribute a substantial percentage of their salaries to the federal coffers.

Go and confirm how much lectures and professors are paid in South Universities and come back here,,,,,if this isn't the height of stupidity... angry

My brother, a lecturer in one of the FG Universities went for this exchange program they do between countries. He was posted to a Uni in Gambia and doesn't want to come back to naija again. He earns over ×2 of his pay in Gambia. Naija is finished honestly.

That's small, it means if one enters into tgeUnversity teaching profession one can't earn up to a million naira at the end of one's career, very appalling.

Some state University have been paying more than a million to it's professors for years now, the FG can do better.

We need to attract smart minds into the profession by making it attractive. This will also rub off on the quality of graduates produced from our Universities over time.

Wow! Would you mind mentioning those state universities that are giving a remuneration of over 1 million naira to their profs? I'd really appreciate.

800k for a professor, that is 9.6miilion a year ,minus other allowances. you guys must be very selfish, and wicked. How much is director at level 16 in a ministry with over 35 years of work salary. Is your job more professional than them. Even permanent secretary salary is not up to 500k. Wicked souls. A teacher at primary school with over 35 years will retire with 70k max, but Una go take almost 800% of the salary. Now I see the reason ASUU is on strike. Federal government should sack all professors, who are into this, and replace them with PHd people who are serious.

In India average salary of a professor is 477,352.78
If not for the devaluation of our currency.

How much are specialized doctors earning.

How much are judges earning. A judge in Nigeria high or appeal court is not up to 400k. Do you know what it takes to become a judge. Nonsense, na only una dey build Nigeria for. Because they call themselves proffers which is a title, then they feel they are superior

How much is universities making for federal government that they should go into debt to pay such amount of money? If universities are making money, they should be able to pay these lecturers with ease.

Stop talking nonsense. If you have nothing to say, shut up.

Stop this trash. If teachers convert what they to dollar, they will never go back to work.

I wanted to have a meaningful conversation with you, but clearly you want to take this conversation to the gutters. Well, good luck with that, I'm out of the trenches and you can't bring me down to your level.

Infact all public Universities should be closed down and money to be used to pay the staffs should be channeled to something else. People like me are already out, so continue.

You're the one not making meaningful conversation.

Any professors that believe he's earning less than he deserves should move to another job or university that can pay him. Isn't that what is applicable in the private sector?

Why will employees want to dictate to the employers?

And for your information, many of these "professors" finished with 2.2 in their undergraduates, and they got their masters and phd through paddy paddy. Even their professorships is based on paddy paddy.

That’s not too much but those lecturers need a strong law that will hold them down too cuz they cannot be collecting such among and devote their time for part job at private universities. State and federal universities need to pass law on this Profs cuz the 800k will still be useless as usual

Let the prof. go and contest an election.

Are you joking? that is too small considering the economy .

A whole Professor

One of the problems that we have is that we respect " titles " more than achievements. Believe me, some secondary School teachers are better than some of our professors.
The real profs. don't depend on salary. Most of them have published works across the world and are making more than #800 000 per month.
If FG pay them the increment, then other Unions will also demand for a silimar increment. At the end, we will spend over 90% of our budget on recurrent expedition.

but
he said that ASUU should sacrifice their 6 months salary as part of the struggle because students have done so with their time
You have to lose something to gain something
.

It means for ASUU to forgo the 6months salaries, ASUU won't also attend to backlog of work then. It simply means that session would be cancelled. Schools fees will be repaid by students, they'll repeat that class, the students admitted for that sessions will have to rewrite jamb again, etc.... The academic environment is complex. If agreements were reached, that session can be fast tracked without students losing much.

I pray both parties find lasting solutions to these wahala sha.

800 k a month is not bad, but it is shameful for some people to be making comparisons with the SA to the president 's as if we don't know he is a political appointee who will most likely go after his principal leaves office Further more, how many such political appointees are there compared to the number of professors.

We are not saying they shouldn't be collecting N1bn per month, afterall their politician-counterparts are earning millions of naira per month and unaccountable billions before they run out of their individual tenures...so, professors should feel free to demand for N1bn per month since they were the ones that trained the politicians how to mismanage the country's resources just the way we are seeing it presently in the country.
But the Nigeria economy can fund the luxurious lifestyle of all politicians down to ward level abi?
We no gree. Them must answer ASUU

But my own concern is, Can the economy of Nigeria sustain such liability? Because, if the current administration is boxed to approve it now, we will not want a situation where the incoming administration will not be able to sustain the payment and thereby, giving the so called professors audacity to come back again and start wasting the time and lives of the innocent students, which some of them are even still in secondary schools for now...

That's the angle people like us are examining it, not their unavoidable rivalry and show of shame two of them have engaged themselves for the past 6months now

That is much with respect to a country like Nigeria. Politicians have a definite time frame and once your time is up and you aren't elected, you will be saying goodbye to salaries from the government coffer. But a professor will be on that steady pay until 65yrs of age.
Most often , professors contact hours in schools are very few. in a whole semester, you can encounter a professor of a course 10 or less.
If their aim and target is to become rich from the government coffer, we all know that is impossible...Even the legislators and government appointees will only end up been poor if they depend on Government pay. Majority of them engage In contract execution in disguise..That is exactly where a large chunk of their money comes from

The federal govt should get out of this federal university business. Privatize the schools or give them to states to manage.
Allow people to pay for schools they can afford and just provide some subsidies.
The unending saga of constant strikes enough.

Am very positive government can not meet up but it can be sustained to. The pros outweighs the cons.

Afterall, if government can pay special adviser who had resign and been absent from office for 3months his full renuneration and still resume back only because he didnt win the prinaries of his political ambition, then paying that is easy.

Moreover, when government knoes that the pay huge bills to pay to true workers, maybe it will discourage waste they always embark on.

Best part is, if people know they can be rewarded to work as educationists, just maybe people will be interest in studying even to professorship.
Most importantly, the economy may be vibrant again with so many intellectuals.

Let me say that you are not speaking from a stand point of understanding. How many directors of level 16 are PhD holders? Of primary school teachers that are Masters degree holders? Remember that those specialized doctors are also taught by professors in that field. You spoke about Indian professors, but I thank God you corrected yourself by hinting on the devaluation of our currency, our money has absolutely zero worth as it is right now.
Do you know that you keep publishing in journals, both local and international, you do research with zero support from our government or industries in the form of grants. So you do your research from your own pocket, you pay for your publications (most times in dollars) from your own pocket. And you say 800k is too much? HABA!!! Get small conscience nah, I published 2 papers in international journals last year the cheapest cost me $100. By our current exchange rate, that's around ~71,000naira now, don't get me started on my ongoing protons exchange research, that's costing millions of my personal money, I send samples to labs in Canada and Netherlands because we don't have the needed equipment in Nigeria here. A course mate of mine who lectures in the UK was given a €2,000,000 grant by the EU. TWO MILLION EUROS!!! Do you understand where I'm coming from now?
Well, not that it matters to me anymore now. I have been disillusioned by this country as it is right now. So goodluck to y'all.

This sounds well. But the truth is that our professors are not innovative. How can we have hundreds of them and they can not come with a solution of making money to run projects, research and finance the schools.

A Nigeria in Yale university who is a professor of African studies argued that laziness, greed and free money is what is killing our universities. Yale university had a budget of 25b dollar a year and over 80% of that came from Alumini, Sports, research, patency. Why can't our universities do even one.
Work athletic, commonwealth games, Olympic are made up is university students from the world making millions of dollars from endorsements. None not even one from a Nigerian university for over 50years. This one is not a rocket science.

The idea of waiting for allocation is the course of our not moving forward. I remember the days of PMAN, waiting for allocation from government to run entertainment industry. Nigeria music was among the top bottom in the world. Here come 2015 the same industry asked themselves we can not continue. Today we are among the top 3 in the world.

Summarily, any industry in Nigeria that goes away from government subvention and look inward can blossom and rule the world. We have the biggest market in Africa, so why can't we do it.

For our Federal university remember the accomodations fees, admission fee, acceptance fee are not paid to the government, amounting to billions what do they do with it. Share, share and share .
