Hypocrite! Are you not aware that VC is an elective post that lasts for 4 years. A senator takes home #35 million a month as a salary but you are mad at VC that goes home with 800k?
well 800k is not too much to offer a prof but FG may also push for increments in tuition fee which could rose to 1.5m per session,I think that would stop the re occuring strikes. But note that a poor man may never get education again

800k for a professor, that is 9.6miilion a year ,minus other allowances. you guys must be very selfish, and wicked. How much is director at level 16 in a ministry with over 35 years of work salary. Is your job more professional than them. Even permanent secretary salary is not up to 500k. Wicked souls. A teacher at primary school with over 35 years will retire with 70k max, but Una go take almost 800% of the salary. Now I see the reason ASUU is on strike. Federal government should sack all professors, who are into this, and replace them with PHd people who are serious.

In India average salary of a professor is 477,352.78
If not for the devaluation of our currency.

How much are specialized doctors earning.

How much are judges earning. A judge in Nigeria high or appeal court is not up to 400k. Do you know what it takes to become a judge. Nonsense, na only una dey build Nigeria for. Because they call themselves proffers which is a title, then they feel they are superior

How much is universities making for federal government that they should go into debt to pay such amount of money? If universities are making money, they should be able to pay these lecturers with ease.

NICE ONE FROM RATIONAL MIND

what do you mean are they PhD holders, you think it's only people who are in university are PhD holders. And let me correct you, there are requirements for different sectors in life. As a lecturer you need to attain the professor level title to feel among, a politician does not need to have a master's talk more of PhD. Neither does a nurse need to be a professor to be in her department. A professor is not superior than any one of them in their own field. Stop comparing nonsense. How many judges are professors? Or do you need a title of professor to become a judge? Universities don't make money for federal government. You want the government to keep going into dept to sustain universities that doesn't make money for them.

800k is too much. A normal salary should 400k or 500k max.

well 800k is not too much to offer a prof but FG may also push for increments in tuition fee which could rose to 1.5m per session,I think that would stop the re occuring strikes. But note that a poor man may never get education again

That's small, it means if one enters into tgeUnversity teaching profession one can't earn up to a million naira at the end of one's career, very appalling.

Some state University have been paying more than a million to it's professors for years now, the FG can do better.

We need to attract smart minds into the profession by making it attractive. This will also rub off on the quality of graduates produced from our Universities over time.

MikeofAfrica:

The problem is can FG handle the effect of such increment. What is good for the goose is also good for the gander. Hence if you pay profs. #800,000, other teachers across the sector will also demand for an enormous increment.
Then the Doctors, Judges, Civil servants, Electric workers etc will embark on their own strikes to demand for their own increment.
This is what I have been looking for.
We all know that it's not a bad idea for a prof after several years to earn 800k.

But almost all sectors are underpaid, if they are increasing the salaries of professors, they should be increasing the salary of teachers that still earn peanut. Infact the minimum wage should be increased.

The fact that someone is a professor does not mean that he should be earning more than other top officials in other fields, this is what they choose and that is the requirement. If it's the requirement for other fields, people will start enrolling to be a doctor and eventually become a professor.
When people were making money in tech, large percentage of people started learning it. It's simple

I'm not against what they want, but can the federal government do the same across all fields?.

Cause I see no reason why a professor will be collecting 800k and a secondary school principal will be collecting 300k or less.

Principals write exam to promote, lecturers write papers.

For our friends that keep comparing Nigeria to US or UK, I'm very sure you have a friend or two that studied in the UK or US.
How much was their school fees in a year.
How much do you pay throughout your stay in school here in Nigeria?

No doubt Nigeria needs help.
But let us always be open minded

Why would FG push tuition fee to 1.5m per session when our senators are the most paid in the whole world? Their monthly wardrobe allowance is 1.5m.

to me,I think that would be the solution but at the same will be a time bomb waiting to explode in the nearest future, many poor people may never get education again which will also result to sharp increase in criminals. To be honest with you,I believe that ASUU understand that FG isn't making profits from education in Nigeria, despite the fact they claim they re underpaid, there re alot of wastage in the way they manage the grants coming from govt. If you re an insider you will understand this better.

You're the one not making meaningful conversation.

Any professors that believe he's earning less than he deserves should move to another job or university that can pay him. Isn't that what is applicable in the private sector?

Why will employees want to dictate to the employers?

And for your information, many of these "professors" finished with 2.2 in their undergraduates, and they got their masters and phd through paddy paddy. Even their professorships is based on paddy paddy.

You comments about this are so shameful to read. Rest please

We are not saying they shouldn't be collecting N1bn per month, afterall their politician-counterparts are earning millions of naira per month and unaccountable billions before they run out of their individual tenures...so, professors should feel free to demand for N1bn per month since they were the ones that trained the politicians how to mismanage the country's resources just the way we are seeing it presently in the country.

But my own concern is, Can the economy of Nigeria sustain such liability? Because, if the current administration is boxed to approve it now, we will not want a situation where the incoming administration will not be able to sustain the payment and thereby, giving the so called professors audacity to come back again and start wasting the time and lives of the innocent students, which some of them are even still in secondary schools for now...

That's the angle people like us are examining it, not their unavoidable rivalry and show of shame two of them have engaged themselves for the past 6months now
oga you and your profs are useless as far as Nigeria is concern! If you and your profs want to earn like politicians resign and join a political party let's see how far you can go.

Nonsense, you forgot to mention that politicians earn that huge money for only 4 years. While profs keep earn until they hit 65 years and retire with benefits.

Tha6not true. In the US, the federal Gov't is not involved in Education to the extent of ownership and controlling any University.
All Universities are either private or State owned and operated but not Federally owned.
It will better to allow states to operate and control these schools. Controlling from Abuja is not working.

Government owned Universities isn't a private Enterprise that is necessarily built to make profitt before any other thing.

Raising the salary of Professors doesn't necessarily mean the tuition will rise astronomically to that postulated amount you quoted but surely tuition fees will rise. Many private Universities don't even charge as much as that.

A typical example is the Rivers State University were Professors are paid more than a million naira is one of the few schools that has not go on strike for a very long time, tuition is still affordable.

Our problem in this country is that those sectors that should earn more earn little (Education) while those that should recieve less (Political Office holders) end up depleting our national treasury with statutory legal bogus entitlement.

The political will to adequately fund the Nation's education through different funding process isn't there, the corrupt system of the country hasn't allowed the right things to be done.
