There have been series of arguments and interest on what particular universities in Nigeria is the first, although both The University of Nigeria Nsukka and University of Ibadan have been noted to be the two oldest university, the University of Nigeria Nsukka is indeed the first University in Nigeria.

The University of Nigeria Nsukka established in 1960 as a full fledged University triumph the University of Ibadan when the issues of the first University in Nigeria is being considered. Recall that as at 1960 when the University of Nigeria was established as a degree awarding institution, the present day university of Ibadan was only a university collage, a branch of a london University.

It was until 1963 that the University of Ibadan became a university, any date before then would have it as a a collage branch.

Given this reality, the University of Nigeria Nsukka is the undisputed first university in Nigeria.
