Dear Northern Nigerians,
Despite northern Nigeria’s access to power since independence, we are still being mocked with illiteracy. Even our northern political elites have used illiteracy to mock us several times and boast of getting our votes because most of us are illiterates

yes the Igbos cost of traditional marriage is high, but our daughters are been married every weekend. this has made our people to be be used to one man one wife.

the cost of bride in Ala igbo price varies from place to place and it's usually negotiatiable.

there are other serious cultures around marriages from SW/SS that has caused lots of trouble and people aren't taking about, including paying for another brideprice during death and not allowing their daughter to be buried in their place of marriage.

marrying an igbo girl is not by force, you can find your heartrub around affordable places.

I have notice that some of the things we do in this country in the name of culture and tradition is Causing poor Nigerians more trouble and we need to change.

1. High Cultural cost of marriage.

2. High Cultural cost of burial. A man in my church have not being able to perform the burial rites for his mother because he will at least one million to do it. He is the only child.

3. Transporting dead bodies from the place they died to the village.

I don't see anything wrong with transporting a corpse to the village for burial

1 traditional wedding is the cheapest in Nigeria am not talking about south east

2) as a Muslim you don’t need money for burial ,even people around will contribute to bury the dead that same day

3) I can’t judge this , some people don’t want to be buried in a strange land
Meself if I die naa Ibadan they go bury me grin No to strange land
Remember earth no get name
Anyway, it's not good to carry what belongs to worms and microbes in your land to another land.

Very "bad cultural practices"!

Other "very bad cultural practices" that should be "urgently abolished/criminalised" include:

4. Horrible maltreatment and dehumanising of widows

5. Vicious and hostile takeover of properties belonging to late spouse by his family members thereby leaving the widow and her children stranded with nothing most times!

Parents need to learn to downsize: There is no point living in a 5/6 bedroom duplex, when all the kids have left home. Most times the parents reach a point where they can't even use the stairs and are just using a downstairs bedroom. We need to become less sentimental about property. If parents sold off the duplex when the kids leave home, get a smaller bungalow, they will be more comfortable and can also have some spare cash to help take care of themselves.
Also we need to stop burying people in their houses. It destroys the value of the property

In the South, I guess. Burial ceremonies (especially for very old people) are like festivals.

OP, regarding burials, those that have the money will always do what the poorer ones would consider extravagant. Yes, removing some mandatory payments might help, but at the end, you can't stop the rich from spending however they want. It's left for the not-so-rich to be smart enough to cut thier coats according to thier size.

In some tribe, if your wife as a first son gives birth to twins, the elders will ask you to divorce her.

you mean I can choose to ignore the ‘long list’?
There is no long list brother... Just 2 gallon of palm whine... A bottle of whiskey, 2 wrapper for the mom. all for traditional sake... Then the 4k... Viola!!! She is already traditionally yours.

Then the traditional marriage... To let the world know you are married... Not compulsory, but it's necessary... We all know women love that stuff. The expenses for the traditional marriage solely depends on you, You can choose to go big or go small... It's your business. No further requirements from her kinsmen or her family.

The problem is that in most places there are things that you must do. In my place you must kill 9 Goats, so if you are an only child and not rich or even jobless, imagine the pressure. If you can't provide them there will be no burial.

Yeah, that's why I said removing some mandatory payments would help. Most times, people hold on traditions like there are sacred, but history has taught us that everything is subject to change. People just fear change either cause they don't know how else to exist or they're benefitting from it. The custodians of our culture are old men who probably paid during thier own time. They don't see any reason to change it now.
