Good day all,

Trust you are all doing well.

I got accepted into the Alx September cohort but I am yet to install any app on my system. Please do you have idea if ALX will inform us about the app to install before starting the program?

Thank you.

There are WhatsApp and Telegram groups that are very helpful, send me a pm and I'll send you three very important links to those groups. You have to install Ubuntu, vim, emacs and git. You'll find necessary info in these groups

Hey Guys

Today's been moving too fast! Just finished my C project but not the advance. Lately, a lot of people from my cohort are reapplying to join the August cohort. Mehn... it's been really overwhelming. Tomorrow's the DAY for eliminated, people who scored below 80% will be removed! Which is why a lot of people have been reapplying.

All C project are given 24hrs deadline and that isn't enough time considering one has to read the grasp the concept, after the first deadline, there's a second deadline but your score will be reduced from 100 to 65. Meanwhile even if you decide to copy from your colleague, it is advisable to still read and attempt the projects on your own because you will have to defend your results. From the picture below, these people are to defend their projects.

Anyways the agreement of ALX and Holberton tech school is an exciting, which is creating wider opportunities for Africans, I can't be the only one excited about the "ROOM".

Were they defending their final project or all the projects they've done in alx so far?

Hello Tracy, pycodestyle is similar to Betty. Its not used to compile python code. Its just used to check for pep8 style guide - which helps programmers write readable code.

Oh thank you for the clarification

Even though we were given a week break, it wasn't enough time. Couldn't rest for minute without thinking of python and the fact that I had wasted the day doing nothing.

So far we have done two projects on python "Hello World" and "if, else and function". I made use of LinkedIn learning for python. One of the mistake we sometimes make is using too many materials or quick to change materials because someone is using a material and it works for them, that doesn't mean it will work for you. Just stick to one and make google search when confused. This actually helped me.

The material I'm using for python is a 19hrs video on LinkedIn learning, it covers from beginners level to advance. It was very comprehensive for me that I didn't need to look anything or any other material.

The "Hello World" project on python covers python as a pyscript, which is a combination of python and shell scripting. We always had to include (#!/usr/bin/python3) in the first line before proceeding to write code.

Once you're done writing your code, you save it and run "pycodestyle" which checks your code for errors, if clear, you can run the code.

Also resumed my frontend course, I felt like I wasted my time with Alx Virtual Assistant Program. Not like the program is bad or irrelevant but rather, I had no interest in it!

While combining the Virtual assistant program with software engineering, I couldn't bring myself to like anything about the program and so, I didn't give it my all. I was given a grace period for one of my project but I chosed to ignore it.

PS: Grace period is the time where you could redo a failed project.

And even if I had done the project, I had no intention to work as a VA, which was why I decided to let it be. People would probably talk about the importance of the certification lol

Well, even without the certificate, I could get a job, certificate without skills is useless. Which is why I have been studying python and refreshing my knowledgeable on html and css.

Lol… why now. You could have just done it. Alx virtual assistance program is easy and important too. I combined it with Alx SE too and I successfully graduated from it without being in grace period.
It’s even easy and relevant. To me if you can’t cope with ordinary virtual assistant program how will you have the patience and grit to complete alx SE. I doubt sha

Perhaps I wasn't cleared with my explanation up there.

I did the Alx Virtual Assistant Program to the end but then there was a particular milestone I failed and was given grace period but I decided NOT to do it, not because I can't but because I realized I have no interest in the course!

I ventured into it because I needed a side job but then having learnt the roles, pay and stuffs of the VA, I realized I wasn't interested even a little bit so I left it! Why finish when I won't be using it?

Also, I am able to cope with Alx Software engineering program!!! Just because I decided to quit doesn't mean I will do the same for the SE Program. I have been at it for four months while working, so don't draw conclusions.

It seriously hasn't been easy.

One thing I wanna explain to all those intending to apply. Please get the materials and prepare ahead.

This message is not to discourage anyone please but to help individuals who intend to finish the program.

A friend of mine told me that last year, out of 24,000 students that applied for his set, only 4000 graduated. Not because they weren't serious enough to continue but some had to drop out probably because they didn't make up to 80% score in the first month. Some because of the workload and projects.

Let me give you a break down using python as an instance. You will be sent materials to read and watch on python with several projects to do for a couple of days. You aren't just getting projects from python alone, and at most you're required to finish reading the materials in a day or two. Then comes to projects.

All emphasis is that you should always prepared five steps ahead. My grade has not been good not because the project is too difficult but because of chance and at times, the checker drives me crazy.

I finished my projects on Git with my working laptop, though I didn't do it on the sandbox, I did it with git bash and linked it to my GitHub only to realize I wasn't scored!! I had to redo it all over again using the sandbox.

From the picture below was how I realized that I wasn't scored that day.

Please how do I get the note, can you send it?

Then. I will be blunt with you to make things easier.

Go and watch tutorials on Shell, Git, emacs and vim. These are important editors and command lines that will be required of you to do your projects. If you have time, check out the materials sent on your mail pertaining C language.

On the first week of the onboarding program, you won't do much(basic projects to inspire you and get you involved in the community) and people tend to let their guards down until the second week, then the third and then you realize... ALX SE program is HARD!

If you want to succeed in this program, always have it in your mind that the program is hard! Because the second you forget that and procrastinate a little, your grades will keep going down while your projects will keep piling, which is one of the reasons why people quit.

Good morning @anonymous6o6
I heard about alx recently from a friend and had to apply. During my research about them I stumbled on your thread here. I must say I'm really impressed. You've done a nice job carrying others along.
I'm selected for the November batch. Can you help with resource materials to prepare ahead?
Thanks
