Because there is no clinical audit, hospital might have contributed to her death. Most hospitals don't do clinical audit and autopsy. Even if she dies due to complications of treatment or disease, it think there should be some waiver in this kind of situation. Social workers should verify the claim of the parents concerning their financial status. If family refuses to claim the body due to financial constraints, hospital would keep on managing the corpse in mortuary for months even years and family can sue the hospital if mass burial is performed on her.

They shld leave the body for them now, the bill is much, where do they
expect the parents to get the money from. The parents of the girl shld
leave the body for them there abeg.
If it were that easy. The parents would love to pay their last respect to their daughter just like any loving relative would! .lf not for money. God punish poverty.
Now their poor daughters corpse would be classified as unclaimed corpse & sent as "Cadaver" for student medical doctors in (state teaching hospitals to use as experiment in practicals theatre/ laboratory classes

May God help us... and this also where the hospital staffs pay their own individual bills too.
CaptainAyub:

If let's say drug suppliers supplied drugs on credit to the hospital, and they used drugs worth 200k on the patient plus other expenses before the patient died, and they write it off for her and every other patient that dies, how will the hospital pay back the pharmaceutical companies who supplied drugs to them?
How will they restock their pharmacy so that the next incoming patient will be attended to immediately?
When the next patient comes and the hospital tells them to go and buy their drugs outside that it is out of stock, same you will complain.

Sad, if only there was health insurance for them it would not have gotten to this.
The common man passes through a lot in this country.
After spending all they have still have to pay for releasing the corpse.

The parents should calm down. The worst is over The child is dead, Mortuary fees aren't expensive. It will be like ₦500 daily. If it was dreadfully expensive, that would be another issue

It's best they have consultation with the hospital.

They can open a Go Fund Me account so that people can contribute and help the grieving family. The hospital is not a charity organisation, if everyone reading this sends N500 that N400k can be raised in 30 minutes
The only sensible comment here so far, like they're supposed to render services for free and not pay their staff

I am a Nigerian doctor in the UK .
The difference is clear... It's a society where the system is programmed to work unlike Naija, nothing good can work.

Wow.

Please accept my condolences. Must have been a very difficult/tough experience for you.

Maternal mortality shouldn't be heard again. Got any idea what really happened? Was an autopsy performed?

Death while receiving treatment in the hospital is an indication for conducting an autopsy. I wonder why this is not in practice. We are only taught these things in medical schools, but in our environment, due to religious, ethnical, and financial factors, autopsies are hardly done. Ideally, in medico-legal cases, the state should sponsor the postmortem; it shouldn't be the responsibility of the patient relatives.

Because postmortems are hardly done, the causes of death in our facilities are difficult to objectively determine. As a result, caregivers do not learn from past mistakes, they are not held responsible for their actions, or inactions, and the patient relatives do not have a definitive closure.

There is trully a need to revamp our country's health sector (essentially, all sectors in this country needs this).

Shebi if the next patient that needs emergency treatment is ignored because they couldn't pay first for treatment and so dies, the hospital will not be held accountable.

Because some of you write as if you don't have sense.

Is it a spirit that will pay for the expenses incurred in Oxygen and drugs while TRYING to save her life?

God gives and God takes. That one comes to the hospital and receives emergency treatment doesn't mean the person must automatically be healed. They are doctors, they are NOT GOD.

The doctors can only try. Many will be saved but some will not be saved but the doctors will still use drugs and resources to try to save them and this cost money that someone will have to PAY FOR....

this thing a big problem now in Nigeria o and calls for urgent attention.
You take a person to the hospital and at the end you lost the person,I
think the hospital should take small responsibility. They can at lease
reduce the price, you can not lose life and money all alone now.
Unless if their is something you should do that you did not and led to
the demise of the person. And in some cases people don't have money
to take care while the person is a life, where will they get money now
that the person is dead. This matter needs attention o.
Most of the blame should go to the government, there should be fund made available for vulnerable people to access free healthcare while the government will refund the money to the hospital management but everything government officials knows is how to make money for themselves.
