TOPIC: THE PRIVILEGE OF SONS BORN AFTER THE SPIRIT
TEXT: GALATIANS 4:21-31
• 21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
• 22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
• 23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
• 24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
• 25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
• 26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
• 27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
• 28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
• 29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
• 30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
• 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
This Epistle clears up the way of grace, to the Cross and salvation. Paul had corrected their wrong notion of Judaism. Many of them after receiving the saving grace of Christ, were going back to the Mosaic law and sacrifices, depending on those things for their salvation. So, Paul as led by the Spirit wants to bring them back to the right way, to abandon the Mosaic laws and rites, and to come fully to the way of Christ.
In this passage, he was making an allegory
and the freedom we have in Christ. He talks about two sons, one son who was negligent and could not get to the kingdom, but the other son renewed and free indeed. He was using the two sons of Abraham to teach the truth of the true son that is freed and inherited the promise by faith. “But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all” (Galatians 4:26). The Jerusalem which we get into by faith in Christ Jesus is above and free.
“But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now” (Galatians 4:29). He that was born of the flesh, born once persecutes he is that born of Spirit, born twice, born again. “Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman” (Galatians 4:30). In this verse, Paul gave us the principle of living, in everything we do in life, what says the Scriptures should be our consideration in all our actions and decisions in life.
The question of getting to heaven is so
important that you cannot leave it to hearsay, or the opinion of men, but what says the Scriptures should be your guiding principle in this matter. Free from sin, Satan, polluted society, old sinful habits, and the chains that bond us, we by the atonement of Christ at Calvary are made free. And it is the people who are made freed that will get to heaven eventually.
A. THE ILLUSTRATION FROM THE SCRIPTURES. Galatians 4:21-26
The allegory and illustration that Paul gave will make us think and apply the word of God appropriately.
(i) Revelation from the Scripture of Truth - Galatians 4:21-22,27; Daniel 10:21; Galatians
3:22-24; Luke 24:44-46. That Bible is referred to as the Scripture of Truth, “But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince” (Daniel 10:21). The angel shows Daniel that he will reveal to him that which is noted in the scripture of truth. So, any man or book that goes against anything in the Bible is a prophet of error and falsehood. The Bible is the Standard. It is the Scripture of Truth. It is the word of God that tells the sinner how to repent, to be saved, and to have the true righteousness to get into the kingdom of God, all things
must be fulfilled.
No man in any generation can come to the Father without Christ being the Way, Truth, and Life (Luke 24:44-46). All things written concerning Christ as the Saviour, Sanctifier, Renewal of lives, Baptiser in the Holy Ghost, Healer, Deliverer and Lord must be fulfilled. It is the Scriptures that convert and set us in the way of righteousness for a good eternity.
(ii) Record from the Scripture for Teaching - Galatians 4:23-24,30a; Romans 15:4; 2
Timothy 3:15-17; 1 Peter 2:6-9
It is the records from the Scriptures that we take and teach ourselves about grace, righteousness and the outcome of a life lived in the grace of God above sins and the pollutions of the world. “But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise” (Galatians 4:23). All of us like the
first son of Abraham were born of the flesh, but if we are going to inherit the promise, we must be born of the Spirit. “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4).
The stories we read about the Old Testament Patriarchs give us hope.
Any hope that is not based on the Scriptures will be disappointing. The Scripture does not give any hope to the one who has not repented, is not converted, does not have a new life in Christ, or anyone that is depending on his self-works to get to heaven. It is called the Holy Scriptures because when it enters into you, it will make you holy.
If you say that you know the scriptures and you are still unholy, evil, and sinful, you are not using the scriptures alright (2 Timothy 3:15). “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16,17). The scriptures never justify iniquity, imperfect or evil, it comes to making us perfect.
(iii) Receiving all of Scripture for our Transformation - Galatians 4:30; Romans 4:3-5; 11:2-5,16; 1 Thessalonians 2:13. We must accept all the scriptures, not be selective in our obedience to the scriptures. We must receive and accept the scriptures on faith, healing, righteousness, holiness and all the teachings of Christ. “For what saith the scripture?
Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness” (Romans 4:3).
Every time, everywhere and in every fellowship, the important question is what says the Scripture? We don’t gather people to just give them motivational talks of men or pet talks, but to teach the scriptures. “For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you
that believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:13). You weigh the words of men with the word of God.
Some people follow and pattern their lives after the words of men. But you will be
disappointed on that final day. It is the word of God, that only, solitary book that points us to heaven. The word of God works in our salvation, and sanctification and put us on the right path to glory.
2. THE IDENTITY OF TWO TYPES OF SONS
Galatians 4:22-23,26-29
(i) Nominal Sons born after the Flesh into Sinfulness - Galatians 4:23,29; Romans 9:6-8; John 3:6; Galatians 5:19-21. Nominal, fleshy, carnal, not having the Spirit or the Nature of God in them. The one born after the flesh, there is an innate hatred for the promise, the Spirit, and the character of the Spirit, so he that was born after the flesh persecuted, he that was born after the Spirit, “But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now” (Galatians 4:29). The one born after the flesh will hate, belittle, persecute and throw stones against the one born after the Spirit.
“Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac
shall thy seed be called” (Romans 9:7). The Jews did not understand this at the time of
Christ when He confronted them that they were not born of Abraham, but of the flesh,
because they hated Him. That though they were Jews, their character does not show that they are born again, they are nominal. Born by Abraham or any righteous man does not make anyone righteous (Romans 9:. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6). He will be sinful, haughty, furious, of the flesh, immoral and not of the Spirit.
(ii) New Sons begotten by Faith after the Spirit - Galatians 4:28-29; 1 Peter 1:3,23; 1 John 5:1-4,18; 3:1-3,9. “Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise”
(Galatians 4:28). We that believe that promise of God for our salvation and righteousness are called brethren. We are born of the Spirit who keeps the word of God to live righteously, be holy in heart and character, and tarrying to receive the power of the Holy Ghost. We live, stand, pray, and live in the promise. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” (1 Peter 1:3).
We were born by our parents, but now we are born again by the Spirit. It is the same word that made those early disciples be born again, that word abides forever (1 Peter 1:23). We love God and keep His commandments, “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments” (1 John 5:1-2). This is the person that will get to heaven. “We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not” (1 John 5:18). Whosoever in any denomination and age sins not if he is born of God.
(iii) Nourished Sons bearing the Fruit of the Spirit - 1 Timothy 4:6,16; Galatians 5:22-24;
Ephesians 5:9-11; Hebrews 12:11-14. Nourished in the faith, in the word, by the Spirit and in the Scripture of truth. “If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained” (1 Timothy 4:6). If you as a minister put the brethren in the remembrance of these things - salvation, a new creature in Christ, living by the grace of God, having the purity of heart, seeking for the righteousness of God as a priority, then you will be a good minister of Christ.
“Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them
that hear thee” (1 Timothy 4:16). If you don’t tell the sinner what it takes to be saved, tell
the believers how to continue in Christ, if you don’t, you will lose the privilege of getting to heaven. You will be bearing the fruit of the Spirit, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts” (Galatians 5:22-24). We are to prove what is acceptable unto the Lord only, and not what is acceptable before our friends, peers, or colleagues (Ephesians 5:9-11).
Lift your eyes, you are on the path to heaven, you will not allow the people who do not make for peace to rob off on you, you don’t want them to pull you down, and to remain on their level, but you want to be at peace with God and all men. You should not trade holiness for peace in this life, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” (Hebrews 12:14). You will not drop holiness for peace in Jesus Name.
3. THE INHERITANCE OF TRUE SAINTS
Galatians 4:30-31
(i) The Forfeited Inheritance of Fleshly Sons - Galatians 4:30; Genesis 21:9-10; Hebrews
12:15-17; 2:1-3. “Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and
her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman”
(Galatians 4:30). If you are bound by bad habits, you lose your inheritance even in this life.
If we become sinful, self-centred, carnal, and rebellious, we forfeit our inheritance because we remain carnal, evil, and sinful churchgoers. If we go the way of Esau, the way of the carnal, fleshy, greedy, sinful, and immoral, we lose the blessing we should have inherited. You might be working diligently, but if you sell off your birth right like Esau, we forfeit our inheritance
(Hebrews 12:15-17). “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at
the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that
heard him;” (Hebrews 2:3). This is why we must pray in the word of God after listening to the word of God, that we come back and make the correction with restitution unto the Lord.
(ii) The Full Inheritance for Faithful Saints - Acts 20:32; 26:18; Ephesians 1:11-14; 5:5-7.
“And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able
to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified” (Acts 20:32). The word of His grace able to build you up and give you an inheritance of the sanctified. You must come out of the camp of the defiled, depraved, and defiant before you
can have an inheritance among them who are sanctified. The ministry of the preacher is to turn the sinners from their carnality to righteousness, from selfishness to the sacrificial life of Christ, and from Satan to the power of God. You must be turned before you receive the forgiveness of sins (Acts 26:18).
(iii) The Final Inheritance for Firm Steadfastness - Hebrews 9:15; 1 Peter 1:3-5;
Revelation 21:7-8,27; Hebrews 6:11-12. All the inheritances on earth fade away, but the
inheritance through salvation in Christ is incorruptible, and it is reserved in heaven for you, “To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:4-5). We are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, not wobbling and backsliding, in and out. Pray that you will get to heaven in Jesus name.
