This is basically a Bleep you to those that say you can't make it without having passion.

i don't want to breath or drink code nor do solving problems give me an orgasm and i don't have a specific desire to work at FAANG
but i'm working my ass off learning software development, this is not a documentation post.
but i'll post here when i do get a job so goodluck to me and anyone who is on the same journey

Lol! Good luck at that bro. Some do it for the money. Others for the passion. Both are valid reasons. People driven by passion also face challenges, not like it's particularly easy. So yeah, here's rooting for you and wishing you all the best.

Side note: Most people doing for passion aren't looking to work for FAANG. They do it for the love of problem solving. That's why you can have a Teamviewer that allows you remotely access your PC for a fee and Rustdesk that allows you do the same for free. Cisco Call Manager charges millions for their Business Telephony solution while FreePBX gives you the same functionality for free. It's fine to chase money. It's fine to chase passion. I don't really get you f*ck you invective lobbed at proponents of passion when you can can also be a massive proponent of money.

You don't need to have passion to excel at something.
I believe what's most important is discipline.

You can code for passion or Paysion

There is not a single human being doing programming for some phantom passion.
Most of those you think are doing it for passion have either worked in big organisations and earned big or are doing it as hobby with the hope earning some day.

Nigerians can be deeply stupid. If not how will someone hustle for PC, power supply, internet subscription, a conducive roof over his head, food in stomach, learning materials, and above all, the learning curve only to end up doing programming tasks for one phantom passion in a country where govt don't hand out welfare packages that can sustain your basic needs?
We need to start lying intelligently. Life goes beyond yahoo yahoo mentality and tying the career of others down.

Repo,
So you are one of a few folks here I enjoy their comments. It's okay to oppose people's positions without condescending to throwing insults. "Nigerians can be deeply stupid" and "We need to start lying intelligently" in a post were you quote me suggest that you think I'm stupid and unintelligent. I will ignore them because I really enjoy reading your posts.

I have repeatedly said that passion or money are both valid reasons for being attracted to tech. My personal position is to encourage and assist those who are driven by passion. That does not in any way down play the financial attraction. In my personal experience, I've come to realise that those I have an affinity for those driven by passion. Your points are valid but there was absolutely no need mixing it with the insults. If IT went out of "fashion" today, I'd still be in the field. And it's a valid position to be in. Years back when I was spending all of my meager income buying IT hardware for home hobby my family outrightly thought I was stupid and unambitious. Spent a lot buying parts from America to build a drone in 2014 long before drone became a big deal. Stupid airsaylongcme. Bought my first RPi in 2014 earning 50k monthly. Stupid me. Today, all of those "investments" are paying off and I'm not so stupid anymore. But at the time, I did them because I wanted to tinker and understand how those kinds of stuff worked. Not because I was expecting them to become money spinners.

Maybe not exactly you but the forum is awash with those kinds of comments these days. That passion is everything. Passion is to keep you going when the road looks rough and money is ultimate the goal. My reference to Nigerians is due to the number of people mouthing it illogically here of late and meant no personal insult.

Brother, thank you for your response. I would say you were already doing well, you had some money. You were doing IT as a hobby or passion. If you can buy parts to make drone, then you were rich. Food and rent were not your problem. Even in the western world who do IT for passion, food, education and welfare is not their problem. I would say people who do IT for passion are doing well, they just need something to give them joy, probably they are getting bored, they need some kicks, some highs. They love technology, just like in China. Nobody loves technology more than the Chinese. However, they have a system that provides your everyday needs while you horn your passion. In summary I would say 90 percent of people in Tech are there for the money and they should not be crucified for doing so.

I have a passion for tech though but it's situation that made me get back into web dev, currently still learning. When I was a kid in 2013 it was like magic how I knew html, now I wish I stuck to that passion for the money. Passion is nice but life can get in the way of passion, the love of money drives passion when it becomes a job in my opinion as no matter how passionate you're about coding, passion won't feed you if you don't have money to continue.

In Programming especially in Nigeria, forget money, passion is everything. It is what gets you from point A to point b when it becomes too hard for your brain to assimilate. It is what sets you apart from others when the sh*t hits the fan, are you willing to go all in? To go months unpaid just to get the product to the finish line? or you just a mercenary, one gig away from driving Uber? Coding in Nigeria doesn't pay as much so you best be doing it for passion else hunger no go allow you see road...

In this part of the world passion will not drive you or motivate you like hunger...
Take it or live it hunger and money have a way of making you do what you think you could never do.
When you remember that if you don't get this thing or do this particular thing, hunger will be your companion or suffering will be the order of the day trust me you'll settle down and fire on.
I'm not trying to say there are people who aren't driven by passion oo but in this part of the world money is the main Koko why people do tech...

assuming you remove money from coding trust me nobody will near it. Is it passion that makes people to risk their life in offshore terminals. If is passion why is everybody doing web and mobile? Is it only web and mobile that we have in IT?

Passion is being subtly interpreted as working tirelessly for free. Who feeds those passionate fellas? Who houses them? Who gifts them data, PC, books, and more?

Any problem solving productive skill can be monitized and should be. Passion is suppose to be a catalyst and not an excuse to suggesting people who have money in mind are wasting time. Those doing seemingly free work have either worked and earned well or are hoping to monitize it.
It is like blogging. A blogger may be working hard to post information for free with the aim of incorporating adverts once there is good followership or maybe trying to help with information they have from real life and financially rewarding experience. Both categories will appear passionate because one is driven to become better and the latter is already focused, disciplined and comfortable.

We have succeeded in taking our own passion to witchcraft level. Where they use it to derail people's career.

Can passion pay your bills?
Persistence doesn't necessarily mean passion. People are persistent due to the money they perceive can be made from any vocation.
I may be passionate about games but leave that game anytime my source of money requires my attention. Passion to me is that inner zeal to work enjoyably. The understanding of money in programming can make you even passionate.
Passion can be a byproduct of various motivations. Motivation for perfection, earning, certificate.
