Nigeria is a zoo, ;Dsomething they should've done inside bush, or an open field. And they're using second hand parachute. grin

Jakumo:
First of all those parachutes are WW2 vintage. They have NO steering ability to allow the parachutist to avoid high tension wires and other obstacles, meaning that anyone using this archaic type of parachute canopy is at an extremely high risk of accidental death during any drop taken without the benefit of steering.

Secondly, the officer that sent those troops out the door of an aircraft that is flying over power lines and using NON-steerable WW2 parachutes, ought to be discharged dishonorably from the military, with NO pension, because that officer placed his men in avoidable danger during a routine training mission.

Steerable parachutes are ALL rectangular in shape, as opposed to the round, non-steerable WW2 canopies shown being used by Nigerian paratroopers.

Carelessness, they did this in a city full of people, the person who brought this idea should be sacked.

This practice needs a wide clear field for training.

You are correct to say that round canopies with less effective steering are the norm for mass "static line" paratrooper drops in open countryside, BUT for special forces and whenever parachute drops take place over urban areas, rectangular performance canopies with precise steering are absolutely essential.

Among the most prevalent mortal perils faced by a parachute jumper who descends over an urban cityscape are live electrical power cables, and for this reason ALONE, round canopy parachutes were a BAD idea as shown in the above footage.

Note the smooth landing after a textbook approach of the French paratrooper using a rectangular canopy, and contrast that feather-light touch down with the Nigerian soldier who was unable to avoid a giant billboard while descending with far less control under his round canopy.

You cannot go and kill the people of Orsu and burn down Eke Ututu market that is 600 years older than your ancestors and expect to go free.

You have taken a loan that even your generations will continue to pay for one way or the other. The god's will keep showing their wrath until the soldiers go and rebuild that market and pay Orsu people recompense.

They need to train strapped to instructors before going solo

And they seem to have little control over the ability to steer the chutes

They should have taken soldiers from 72 battalion. But most of them were deployed to North East
