Well, context is there to help one understand the meaning intended by the author!, and to deter readers from insisting their own meaning is what ought to apply instead. You have to realize that scripture is written to convey a message and that message is more important that the assumptions and delusions of the consumer of the texts.

God never in fact specified anywhere in Scripture that He would send out an exactly number from the 12 original tribes of Israel to go gather back to Himself those whom He cursed and scattered of Israel to all the end of the earth, so I don't quite understand the obsession some have with wanting the description of the 144,000 to be exact in any way to the 12 tribes of Jacob. What God said through His prophets is that He will mark some of his special people and then send them out to gather their brothers and sisters from every tribe, every language, and every nation out there - Isaiah 66 vs 18 - 23.
