Independence Day is an official national holiday in Nigeria, celebrated on the 1st of October. It marks Nigeria's proclamation of independence from British rule on 1 October 1960.

Brief History of Nigerian Independence Day

European influence in modern-day Nigeria began when in the 16th century when the first explorers from Spain and Portugal began trading with locals, leading to the development of ports, such as Lagos.

The British became an increasingly dominant influence on the region in the late 19th century through the Royal Niger Company, resisting German attempts to expand in the region.

In 1900, the territories under the control of the Royal Niger Company became the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. In 1914, this was combined with the Northern Nigeria Protectorate to create the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria, which forms the borders of modern-day Nigeria.

Many aspects of modern life in Nigeria were established under the period of British Rule, but by the middle of the 20th century, the call for independence sweeping across Africa and the decline of the territories in the British Empire led to Nigeria being granted independence on October 1st 1960 under a constitution with a parliamentary government and a degree of autonomy for the country's three regions.

Nigeria marked total independence from Britain when it became a federal republic when a new constitution was adopted on 1 October 1963 with Nnamdi Azikiwe as its first president.

Political unrest led to a series of military coups in 1966 and Nigeria was ruled by a military junta with the democratic rule not being restored until October 1st 1979.

Nothing to be happy about on this auspicious day.
Terrorism and banditry are on the rise.

Astronomic food prices, naira inflation, with hunger and poverty ravaging the land.

High level of insecurity and corruption.

Nigerian students are on strike for the greater part of the year.

If the president had any conscience, he would use today as a day for sober reflection.

A day to remember those who have lost their lives as a consequence of his administration's incompetence.

Nawao!. Wetin Nigeria no go see for these useless and corrupt leaders.

If only Nigeria is a human being, she would have been on life supporting machine, those politicians have beaten the life out of Nigeria with their unrelenting embezzlement and corrupt practices.

Moreover, the options of those leadership or political parties before us, coming 2023 are just options of choosing among the three, the lesser evil. But choose wisely.

My words to us has no end.

They don’t want us to be independent, that is why politicians hate PO. He cut his own allowances. No other Nigerian politician will refuse to steal and also refuse "unnecessary" perks. Under Obi, Anambra was rated by UN as best in 1. education 2. road network 3. healthcare 4. transparency with specified goals based on the UN MDGs. BAT MET LAGOS WITH 20BN DEBT AND LEFT IT IN 2007 WITH A 600BN DEBT. OBI CLEARED A 45BN DEBT & LEFT 75BN FOR THE NEW GOVT. BAT MET LAGOS WAEC RESULT AT 6TH POSITION BUT WHEN HE LEFT LAGOS HAD DROPPED TO 12TH POSITION, OBI MET ANAMBRA WAEC AT 26TH POSITION BUT WHEN HE LEFT ANAMBRA WAS 1ST. If 50% of Lagos's funds is invested in Lagos, it would compete with Jo'burg / Dubai. Cities half Lagos population have multiple airports; Lagos has no State airport because most of its budget is stolen. PO left so much in Anambra that his successor could establish an airport that has Africa's longest runway, without borrowing.
