At midnight on 1 October 1960, Salaudeen Akano, then a naval rating, lowered the British Union Jack for the last time and hoisted the green-white-green flag of the Federation of Nigeria for the first time, signifying Nigeria's attainment of political independence.

Akano later got commissioned into the officer corps and rose to the rank of commodore. Akano attained the rank of Commodore and retired from the navy in 1992. By a supreme twist of fate, he died aged 62, on 1 October 2001

By 1960, the Nigerian officers in the Royal Nigerian Navy included Lieutenants Wey, Pearse, Akinloye and Chiazor. Sub Lieutenants Victor Oduwaiye, Oni, Duyile and Martins.

Chiazor commanded the Navy platoon that lowered the Union Jack and hoisted the Nigerian Flag during Independence in 1960. He ordered Salaudeen Akano, an Ordinary Seaman, to lower the British flag.

What a history for you late Commodore Salaudeen Akano. Continue to RIP sir. So how come one rarely hear of this man that played such a historic role in the immediate post-independence Nigeria?

Is there any legacy to immortalise him? One only hear of Commodore Akinwale Edet Wey which the Ojo Naval Base Headquarters was named after. Thank Goodness for this information

Meanwhile, though Nigeria was a false and forced experiment of the imperial Britain, it really have a chequered history of its nation life.

Lt Louis Victor Ugoma was the first Nigerian to be commissioned in the Queen Own Royal Nigerian Regiment( present day Nigerian army).

While Lt Col. Dim Chukwuemeka was the first graduate to enlist into the Nigerian army, Sub- Lieutenant O. Z. Chiazor was the first Nigerian to enlist into the Navy. Proudly Igbos! My people una dey see am? History must be taught in our school for the sake of those who wants it distorted

However, the first Nigerian to be commissioned as an officer in the navy was Onwura Zonyeuno Chiazor. He became a Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy [RCN] in 1957. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2018/12/agony-of-first-naval-officer/amp/

We just like fooling ourself in Nigeria ,as Nigeria will never be great.
Among all the countries created by Western countries in the world, Nigeria is destined to fail right from the independence.

Indonesia and South Africa come to mind as there is no country by these name about 100 years back and purely created by Western powers for there selfish interest .
Indonesia have a common binding through Islam even though they are divided by ethnic groupings.
South Africa United by Christian religion even though divided by race.
Some countries are united by having same ethnic group as common factor but divided by religion like South Korea etc.

Nigeria like previous Sudan has no common uniting factor among all the people ,so it is programmed to fail from independence onwards

He should not have lowered the BUJ.

He lowered suffering and hoisted more suffering.

We are still being ruled by the British, anyway.

Freedom is not yet attained, the struggle continues.

Maybe, just maybe, our children will get it right. cool

Valid question should be if it was a coincidence or it was a sign that naija shouldn't have been created? Just saying

That was a very ordinary activity for him at the time, he may have grudges doing it, without knowing the significance of that.

And he died on 1st October? At 62.. my mom is 62 today 1st October

While China have a population of over a billion people, it's one of the world powers today left are not as diversified as Nigeria.

This religious and ethnic divide has truncated progress.

This country called Nigeria is just a senseless contraption created to serve the West but doomed to fail.

I just feel this Obi of a man is a very lucky person. Imagine you coming for a contest and your opponents are glaringly so unfit from all perspectives.

First the ruling party APC messed up the country for good 7yrs, making life so difficult for the citizens. As if that wasn't enough, of all NIGERIANS available, it was an old sick convicted drug lord they saw to field as a candidate. To add more salt to the big injuries, the sick candidate decided to go by a Moslem Moslem ticket when we all know that Nigeria is a multi religious nation.

On the other hand, the main opposition, the PDP decided to field a well known criminal who joined in looting Nigeria dry during his time as VP for 8 good years. Now it is him they decided to field again. A man who couldn't even unite his own party. A man who can't even stand by his words for once. When Deborah was murdered in cold blood by his people, he condemned the act, but as soon as his brethren threatened him, he rushed to delete the tweet and denied not condemning the barbaric act. Now his party is so divided that the house can't stand. The north still in power and yet they want us to vote the north again as if they are making the country better in anyway.

Now I know that Obi emergence is divine.
OBI IS SIMPLE A LUCKY MAN.

Was Nigeria ever great??

Go and watch documentary, immediately after independence, trouble started.

The politicians, just like now, started stealing and favouring the friends/families, the military took over to fight against corruption but they became worse.

The country was programmed to fail, stop fooling yourself.

Una don start with Ojukwu lies again.

The same way I busted the lie some years ago about Ojukwu being the 1st Nigerian at Oxford University.

Ojukwu was not the 1st, and has always been carefully referred to as one of the 1st set of graduates to enlist in the Army.

BIAFRA IN DILEMMA
BIAFRA is forever, but OBI is an eight year slight possibility.

Why should Igbo abandon a generational struggle for a lasting independence
for an eight year ride on a donkey that may not be even possible?

Some Igbos may think Obi is a short cut to Biafra, while others may surmize that through Obi they will capture something bigger than Biafra which the economic and political domination of Nigeria. Alas! How preposterous and wrong are these Igbo myopic speculators. Too many greedy Nigerianizers sorround all the candidates. No one can go through the system to abort it. As for the total domination of all Nigerians by a single tribe, that is down right impossible. The complexity of interests and the size of other people is beyond the possiblity of being subjugated by one people among the rest.

There is one way to Biafra and IPOB is on that path. Apart from that all else is anti-Biafra and wasted labour. Obi is a liability in the struggle for Biafra. If Igbo follow him, they will lose Biafra and be nowhere near ruling Nigeria.

A Prayer for Nigeria & Nigerians!

On this Independence Day, Lord! Have mercy on us!

We are a sinful nation, a sinful people! We have sinned greatly against you, leaders & all!

Much deceit! Much wickedness. Much immorality! Much injustice, violence & the shedding of innocent blood! The addiction to & crazy pursuit for money! Lord you know them all...

Forgive us our sins. We seek a new nation. A better nation where there's equity & justice, peace, progress & prosperity! Where more & more Nigerians come to You, live for You, serve You & remain in You.

In mercy let your will be done in Nigeria! Because of the poor, the needy & the oppressed! Deliver the people from the hands of those too strong for them.

These & more I ask in Jesus name! Amen!
