Many take the book of Revelations literally. Things written there are symbolic.

In the Book of Daniel's, kingdoms were referred to as beasts.

What of the mark of the beast? It's not a physical mark that can be detected by the eye. It's a figurative mark. It simply implies those who support the beast ie nationalism. Even in the first century, the 6th King, Rome, persecuted the Christians mercilessly because their loyalty was to God and not Rome (Rev 17:12) The 6th king represented the 4th kingdom in the huge statue that king nebechanezzar saw.

The book of Daniel gives insight into who the other kings are and which king exist in our day. It will have feet partly of iron and partly of clay as the statue deduces.
