It's been dead for a while - now we have to wake it up.

President Ruto: We have a bad privatization law and instead of the law helping us in privatization, it has stalled the process. I have given an order that if we can’t amend it in our first 100days in office, we will repeal it…

Maybe due to these sentiments your NSE market reacted yesterday as it gained around 2% for the trading day (if I'm not mistaken). But your market really suffered this year though due to capital flights and all that.

How do you know apart from rough guestimation what got sold or bought and for how much - you need a percentage of this formally marketted.
The countries with the highest volumes of grain production in 2018 were Nigeria (26M tonnes), Ethiopia (25M tonnes) and Egypt (22M tonnes), together accounting for 37% of total production. South Africa, Morocco, Tanzania, Mali, Sudan, Niger, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

rvp2018:
I dont see how this is big. it's chaotic mess. You gov need to encourage farmers to belong to cooperatives and the cooperative to build silos - and assist in proper marketting of their produces.

Kenya has National Cereals Produce board that has silos all over the country - it not functioning well but it way ahead of nigeria

The same is replicated in tea, coffee, etc.

You need formalized marketing boards..hopefully run as cooperatives that aggregates smallholder farmers.. that not only meet the local needs but the export of these products...not flea markets like these.

Ghana has good Cocoa board.....it just a shame Ghana gov sometimes uses it as collateral to borrow money smiley

You can’t tell us what to do. Nigerian agricultural sector is huge - whether it is organized or not, that’s not the point. Focus on the output abd stop splitting hairs.

You have huge arable land enough to feed population.
Kenya, Ghana and Ivory Coast are net agricultural food exporters feeding Europe and the world.
Nigeria is a net agricultural importer.

I agree. However, this grain business is still big because it is situated in the second most populated state in Nigeria with around 20 million people and majority are employed by these and other agricultural activities.
Textile is also big in this state employing millions but informal trade as well.
Kano population is not near 20m sir.

Have you done business in kano. Do you know how much grains gets exported to neighbouring countries( Chad, Cameroon and Niger).
Don't let that Kenyan guy work you to believe all Nigerian farmers do is produce and sell in local markets at cheap prices.
There are big business men who buy in bulk from farmers and rebag their grains for export.(our govt only fail in implementing price control)
Just the fishing business in baga, its so huge that it can comfortably generate huge revenue for the govt if taxation goes on well.

save Tea, what does Kenya have to boast of in agriculture? Tea can easily be controlled by their Govt, but not so much with grains.
Maybe if the Kenyans were a little less concerned about making money from every farmer and making everything 'formal' there wouldn't be need for the yearly food aids they receive.
Let's put it straight, ''KENYANS ARE HUNGRY''

Nigeria is a huge country and the people are very enterprising, from south to north, east to west and in-between. The Nigerian economy is larger than believed. What a serious government needs to do is fix security in the north and east corridor, and do something tangible about electricity. And also fix education in the north. The missing link in Nigeria's quest for development is the north.
Mehn apart from Agric, Nigerian informal trade is fvcking huge and those guys make good money because of the huge market especially in places like Lagos and Kano.

I still remember my first time visiting Lagos in 2005, and I visited Apapa. My God.

The amount of trade and activities in my area then were non stop. Even as at 3a.m in the night, we were awake amongst large crowds and passersby's trading in one thing or the other. As at 3a.m, we could buy fish, plantain, suya, etc. There were plethora of options and markets to choose from. I don't know if Apapa is still that way today, but that was my experience then as at 2005.

Kenya export more than 200 types of crops internationally. Our economy is almost entirely built on the agri-sector. Hungry when vegies, fruits, and beverage feeding Europe and world come from Kenya. Those hungry are those facing drought in northern remote parts of kenya.

Do you agree that formal Agriculture though it has more advantages, is sometimes not always the most optimised form of Agriculture as we have been made to believe especially given our African way of living?
A balanced mix of both is what I recommend with more of the agricultural sector formalized of course.

There is space for farmers market - but farmers, consumers and exporters - will benefit more if you formalize the sector. Nigeria with it's huge arable land would be exporter of agri products if it did that. Look at kenya with tiny slice of arable land.

The big difference kenya inherited a colonial formal agriculture sector that was built on cooperatives and grew it.

Nigeria can do this. India has Amul - the big dairy coop. China has ALL-CHINA FEDERATION OF SUPPLY AND MARKETING - cooperative - for it's farmers. Kenya has KTDA. Ghana has their Cocoa board. Etc. These are cooperatives that can grow the domestic market and even grow export market.

You can organize farmers into cooperatives. Dont celebrate flea markets. With formalized cooperative based smallholder farming - you will feed Nigeria - and the world.

Look at China - giant farmers cooperatives - for lessons.

All China Federation of Supply and Marketing Cooperatives (ACFSMC) is the apex organization of all supply and marketing cooperatives (SMCs) nationwide, and represent the largest cooperative organization in China. An important force in developing the rural economy, ACFSMC has played a major role in ensuring the supplies of agricultural means of production, activating circulation of farm produce, promoting industrial management of agriculture, and boosting the rural market. By the end of 2014, ACFSMC represents 32 provincial, 342 prefecture, 2377 county federations of SMCs, 20050 primary cooperatives, 19431 cooperative enterprises and 312 institutes at different levels, with totally 3.47 million employees.

Or India amul - Nigeira wont import milk - with all those cows - they would be exporting milk

Or kenya KTDA - farmers cooperative with 600,000 small scale farmers that pays more than a billion dollars to farmer - and has made kenya world top black tea exporter. KTDA has more than 70 tea factories... KTDA are able to aggregate small 1 acre farmers into huge economies of scale, negotiate for large discounts, and benefit many
