At times, when I sing in private, I start singing in tongues too, not consciously, the Spirit gives me utterance. It is also possible that when some ministers are recording their songs in high Spirit-filled atmosphere, they too can break in tongues. I spent 20yrs of my Christian life insulting those who speak in tongues. Two years ago, I was singing with all my heart, after sometime, I realised I was no longer singing in English but in tongues, I felt so much peace, since then I've been speaking in tongues. Please, I beg you all in the Name of God, don't be like my past self insulting the Precious Holy Spirit and His precious gift of speaking in tongues. If you have never experienced it, just pray for Him to reveal Himself to you. He had mercy on me and showed me Grace even though, I never prayed for one day to speak in tongues.

You were speaking in tongues but wasn't of God, it's called " familiar spirit" and it's of the devil. The devil is the master of pervert, he pervert almost everything that is of God except life and life eternal. How can you be alone in your room and start speaking in tongues and say it's of God, God is not an author of confusion, he has made his word clear in the scripture about speaking in tongues. Before any man speak in tongues it must be in a gathering of two or three in his name and there also must be someone to interpret it, other than that the Holy Spirit will not fall on any man to speak in tongues and anything other than that is of the devil.
I heard so many pastors, gospel artist and religious leaders called speaking in tongues a heavenly language, it is a lie and i totally disagree with that. Speaking in tongues is me being a Yoruba, the Holy Spirit fall upon me and i prophecied in a language i don't understand, maybe French Hausa Igbo ibibio efik Spanish language and there must be someone in that gathering who understands the language the Holy Spirit prophecied with and it's the Holy Spirit that will appoint the interpreter. Anything else than that is of the devil.

The Bible says he that speaks in an unknown tongues speaks to God, not men... No man understands him howbeit in the spirit he speaks mystery.
If it's tongues the holy spirit gives, u can't understand it.
U cannot understand speaking in tongues, the person is speaking in mystery to God. God hears wat he is saying.

There’s no where the bible says that.
Speaking in tongues means speaking in a language other than your native language not some gibberish and term it “unknown language”, of what benefits is it to those hearing it?

Nowadays people just say gibberish and call it tongues. A pastor that just commit adultery with his choir mistress will even mount the pulpit immediately and start blabbing (eyabashibioshibia). All these things are learned and man-made.

The truth is that most tongues being spoken in the churches these days are fake so nothing new there.

There might be some genuine tongues being spoken on some of those songs you spoke about if it was truly the Holy Spirit that gave the utterances but that rarely happens.

That's one area the church needs revival today.

God bless.
Are there real tongues?

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. Now that you have quoted Mark 16:17- 20- And these signs will follow those who [a]believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[b] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

But I will ask you to read my writeup again because I perceive that you hurriedly read it. I emphatically stated that I believe in speaking in tongues. Please see the article again especially the fourth paragraph.

Now, you will seen in the passage of the Bible that it's not only speaking in tongues that is ascribed to believers. So, I will ask you if you can pick up a serpent? How many demons have you cast out? can you drink anything deadly? Can you lay hands on the sick?

How many of the above have you even tried before apart from speaking in tongues?

“If any are going to talk in tongues, let it be at most two or three, each in turn, with another to interpret what they are saying. But! If there is no one to interpret, there should be silence in the assembly, each one speaking only to himself and to God” (1 Cor. 14:27-28).

Though St. Paul encourages this kind of speaking in tongues, he carefully warns, that it confers no badge of privilege. It has to be done with sincerity and love. Without this, St. Paul cautions, the tongues of men and angels are mere clanging cymbals (1 Cor. 14:5, 18, 39; 1 Cor 13:1).

My dear modern Christian worship has really been hijacked by strange spirits. You need to visit university campus fellowships so you can see how bad it has become. The university is now filled up with strange spirits luring students into their fellowship and teaching them that speaking in tongues is all there is to Christianity, any corner you turn to you see students speaking rubbish in the name of tongues. Students don’t pray again, they just say gibberish and most of them have never had an encounter with the Holy Spirit they’re always talking about. I’ve tried to join so many fellowships but they are all the same thing even ordinary class prayer if you’re not speaking rubbish like them they’ll keep telling you that you’re not yet filled with the Holy Spirit. The only thing they talk about is how you’re supposed to speak in tongue not even salvation, so many of them have tried to force me into speaking rubbish but I refused. It even got to the extent that they wrote them incorrigible words and told me to cram it so that when others are speaking in tongue I’ll be reciting the rubbish I crammed. That’s when I discovered that it’s the same thing these students keep on repeating in the name of prayer. I left the fellowship after telling them to open their mouth and tell God what they want in the language that they understand. These children have been brainwashed
It's a shame how desperate the church has now become that they no longer want to wait for the Holy Spirit to come, that they now resort to doing it themselves. They have their own reward.

It's good that you never gave in to those lies. You're on the right path. When the authentic tongues comes, you would know the difference.

I am speaking from experience.

God bless.

Thanks for this...This should make you press and contend to be all that Jesus said believers should be. We should press into this realities in the Godlife. The Bible is not superstory... Greater works shall we do...if we are not doing it, we should cry out for the more of God...why sit content when you can heal the sick and cast out demons? At least we had Bishop Benson Idahosa that showed us that these things are possible...press for the more of God.. let's stop excusing our powerlessness with doctrines and theology.. So many ignorant opinions on this thread....

It's so useless arguing with them.

I'm not so into tongues but one thing I know is that if you have the spirit of God in you, you won't find it difficult to discern or not.

So whether someone speaks in tongues through songs or not, is not the question. The question is, what your spiritual state when listening to the songs?

If you're sound in Christ and not blinded by dogmatism, does the song make you feel edified or not, the answer lies with you

If you are conversant with the modern-day gospel music industry, you would have noticed a sudden surge of unknown tongues in many gospel songs from gospel artists of mostly black descent. This sudden development in my opinion is worthy of serious interrogation as the Bible says that we should test all spirits so as know which is of God [1 John 4:1].

The gospel songs I knew while growing up emphasized godly living using language(s) that can be understood. The hymns for example are written in plain language(s) and one can attest to the fact that those songs are divinely inspired and spirit-filled. Meanwhile, the present crops of gospel music raving the moment are mostly incorporated with unknown tongues and spiritual chants that can not be understood by anyone and yet we have not found a single interpreter to interpret the tongues in these popular songs. I believe that in itself negates the fundamental injunction stated by Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 14:27.

I have been to megachurches in several regions of Nigeria where I have heard worship leaders repeating the same tongues in these popular gospel records verbatim and I get confused each time. Damn! Something is wrong somewhere. It's almost impossible to hear a gospel record these days without hearing an unknown tongue in it. Could that be the latest marketing strategy to sell gospel records?

Yes! I believe in tongues but I also believe that not all spirit-filled Christians must speak in tongues. Some operate in other gifts like prophecy, Discernment, word of knowledge, words of wisdom, walking of miracles e.t.c [1 Corinthians 12:4-11]. it is the spirit that distributes these gifts but I wonder while the present church places much emphasis on tongues. Well, maybe that's because tongues are the easiest to fake. Maybe I said.

Now to my honest questions:

1. If speaking in tongues only edifies the one who speaks it and not the body of Christ as it is in 1 Corinthians 14:4, why will any gospel musician incorporate an unknown tongue in his or her song lyrics for the body of Christ?

2. Where exactly is it written in the Bible that Christians should sing in tongues? Is there anywhere in the Bible the Apostles did? I know pentecostal christians will mention 1 Corinthians 14:15 but is that what Apostle Paul was really saying in that passage?

3. Why were the ancient gospel songs not incorporated with unknown tongues as we have now? Could it be that modern Christian worship has been hijacked by strange spirits?

Above are my reservations about the sudden proliferation of unknown tongues in modern gospel music. I will appreciate answers with biblical reference(s) to my questions in the comment section.

Thanks!
grin Very quick replies to ur quiz.
1. If the gospel singer does not EDIFY himself, how does he edify another person?
2. 1corinthians 14:15 Exactly wot Paul meant. He sang in tongues
3. The level of spiritual advancement today is higher than in d past.
Thank you

You've concluded your statement already, you said you don't believe every Christian should speak in tongues, and that gives a clue into the purpose of your writeup. You're trying to counter what goes against your fundamental belief.

However, to others, I'd say, the bible is your school and the Holy SPirit is your teacher, don't let anyone on social media be your teacher. Listen to God, listen to those whom He has ordained as teacher of the word, and have an intimate fellowship with God. Sellah.

The OP has raised fair questions which shows that he is concerned for the future of the church. Why don't you examine the questions and try to come up with a more cogent response.

I gathered my point from the BIBLE, a book without any 2nd edition, a book written through inspiration of the Holy Spirit on if I'm not mistaken 44 Prophet from different countries and different locations of this world but comes together to marry itself without errors without correction.
A book which it Old and New testament point to Christ.

Yes! I believe in tongues but I also believe that not all spirit-filled Christians must speak in tongues.
Therein lies the problem. Yes, every believer should speak in tongues. I say this authoritatively.

The bible says "And these signs shall follow them that believe...they shall speak with new tongues" (Mark 16:17).
If you don't speak in tongues, then maybe you haven't received the Holy Ghost yet or you have no faith? We can see in Acts 2:4 that every last one of the apostles began to speak in other tongues as they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

It is good to pray in your understanding especially when in a congregation, but when you're alone communicating with the King of the universe, the Author and the Finisher of our faith, Omo there's a level of edification that enters your spirit when you pray in the spirit. Remember: God is a Spirit, and man is spirit. When we pray in tongues, our spirit is in direct contact with God. We are talking to Him by a divine, supernatural means.

Finally, "Building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost" —Jude 20. Every child of God must speak in tongues, my brother. God bless you.
